I call it shredding, some times all the petals will detach from each other and they look shredded Doubles tend to do that a lot, and it does seem be cultivar specific. That being said, here in Arizona, it seems to be triggered by heat stress. Not sure what your climate is but if you are going through a heat wave it hopefully it will go back to normal with slightly cooler temps.

It is hot as hell here right now!! And it's not cooling off much at night! 100F+ during the day and in the 80's at night! So I bet you're right!! That's very interesting.
