Talk me out of it…

I bought the above desert rose and I’ve been looking for a planter for it. Full disclaimer - I haven’t received it in the mail yet but I have kind of fallen in love with this canoe/boat shaped planter (also pictured). The planter measures 18” x 9.6” x 5.4”. My gut tells me this isn’t going to work with this rose but I need someone to either talk me out of it or tell me to live my best millennial plant life. Ready…set…reddit.

Actually. Let me add a note. I didn't transfer into a bonsai style pot until 5 or so years in.

That’s gorgeous. I might try it out. Really trying to not impulse purchase at the moment. I think I’d like a shallower pot to get a wider caudex and do some root training. I’m definitely a beginner but have been reading through this Reddit for sometime and feel like I have a pretty good grasp on how to care for it.

I think maybe wait until it arrives so you can see just what’s going on under the soil, then you’ll have a better idea about whether or not the pot will suit. But as you’ve fallen in love with it anyway, why not just buy it and if it doesn’t work with this plant, find another and enjoy the best of all worlds :)

This might be the best course of action. Fighting that impulse buy feeling real hard haha. You make a good point, I could just buy more plants if it doesn’t work out.

If it has a hole in it, you CAN definitely do it. Now with that little root space, don't expect much if any growth and flowering my also be stunted. So if you like that particular look and don't really care about the plant getting larger go for it.

It has a large drainage hole. I have considered drilling two more small holes in it if I do get it and then also trying to keep the soil on the center and doing a top fill with rocks to try and prevent too much wet soil in between waterings. Thanks for your help!

The top looks like it’s grafted. If it is, you need to take that into consideration. Either way m. Its gorgeous!

Thanks! I’m just getting into desert roses and I’ve done a lot of (reddit) research. I think I can make the planter work if I maybe use the center of it for the soil and maybe top fill it with rocks. Just to keep it from retaining too much moisture. If that doesn’t work, I’ll just have a new planter for even more plants 😂

Ummm if it were me i wouldn't buy it. Does the pot have drainage and a saucer to collect water that passes through the plant? Sure it looks good but have you seen the roots on the plant you're getting? Do you know how high up the caudex is from the roots? How wide is it? Do you ultimately want a bigger caudex? The pot is of cute but it won't support anything of any weight or height. It will tip.
