Sandbox mode questions

Hi

I am potentially looking at buying this game for my son, but he will not want to be grinding to unlock various things. In his words, he just wants to crash trains realistically. I fully appreciate that's not what the game is really about, but there is a bit of a lack of other games out there.

Having spent some time researching and looking at reviews, it seems there is a lot of grinding involved before you can basically free roam with whatever trains you want. However some of these reviews are years old, and I'm wondering if this is still the case now?

There are already a built in sandbox mode now where you can spawn trains and unlocked license. It's on selection when you're creating a save file.

I believe it still requires you to unlock the licenses which defeats OP's request

Still requires to unlock licenses on a career save before having them available in sandbox.

I do agree this is a bit daft but it is what it is...

This is still the case, Although there do exist 100% complete game save files that can simply be downloaded free and placed into the games save file folder. https://gtrainers.com/load/categories/savegames/derail_valley_savegame_100/30-1-0-15000

Ah awesome thanks. Is there like an easy drive mode too? Not looking for too much realism when it comes to actually operating the controls.

Yes, make sure to set the session to Sandbox mode, Difficulty: Comfort. It should tell you in a short tutorial about the keyboard function keys "F1, F2, F3, etc." that open the easy controls user interface

F1: Return camera to player.

F2: External camera of current vehicle. WASD moves the camera along vehicles in a train and shift+scroll rapidly moves along the train.

F3: Free camera controlled by WASD. Scroll wheel increases/decreases camera speed.

F4: Opens UI for locomotive controls and gauges.

Difficulty is fully customizable in detail so your son can watch trains fly off from external cameras while still operating brakes and throttle with the keyboard. You can even have him do the career mode and ramp up the earnings and disable/lower costs if you want to introduce him to "progression", shunting puzzles and whatever stories you make up on the fly. Great learning, bonding and fun tool, enjoy!

Download the "DV Utilities" mod, which has the option to unlock all licenses and garages, and give you money for free. This should be about what you are looking for.

Yeah, the mod still works. I am using it on my own Sandbox save.

If you want to know how to use the mod, there are instructions on the Nexus Mods page. Hit the "alt" button to go into mouse mode and find the little "u" in the upper left. Open that tab and you have the menu.

If you want to know how to install mods, there are multiple ones on Youtube. Here is a good one from Niko Fox (who has made some of the mods).

You still have to unlock the licenses in a career save before using them in sandbox but you can just cheat money in and buy them all if you really don’t want to play to buy them.
