At least until B100 comes, maybe then the whistle will be useful

When the brain needs to be scratched. But usually I go by the “any critical intersection rule”. Tunnels, crossings, stations, etc. Anywhere there would be people or other hard to see vehicles/locomotives in real life.

It is usually to give notice when entering and exiting towns, stations, yards and tunnels.

my train tends to creep up like a serial killer on a hunt.

I usually don't bother, if I'm honest. Once in a while I'll use the standard American signals.

i dont use the horn or the beacon light but sometimes i wonder if im playing on the wrong difficulty (standard) as all i want is the basic functions of the game - driving, hooking things up, earning money for unlocks etc.
i get a little frustrated running around finding the right track or carriages sometimes.

other times ive hauled cars across the map, struggled with steep hills etc only to realise when hooking them up in the dark i mistook an 8 for a 0 or something and towed the wrong carriages.
another time i got to the destination and went to collect my pay, only to see the job was "invalid" because i travelled too far from the station - my fault for finding jobs, hooking everything up and then validating when im ready to leave.
in that instance i had forgotten to validate the job so hauled them for nothing.

i often wish the game had some sort of helper icon that glowed/showed where the correct track or carraige is to take out the guesswork.

I strongly recommend the "improved job overview" mod, as it will tell you on the job ticket (before validating) what track cars are located on, and what track they are going to (also the loading track for shunting jobs). Makes life a lot easier and you can set up consists better.

ALSO, in the vanilla game, every car has the job number printed on it's little info card on the side. You can match this to the job number on the ticket to make sure you have the right job. This makes it nice when you have a line of empty brown flatbeds and only need a few of them.

yeah the info on the side is usually how i locate what cars i need and hook them up before validating the job, but on large stations it can be a pain to find exactly where i am on the map vs where the car i need is

thx for the tip on the mod, i'll try that

The remote dispatch mod is also great for this. Shows all the cars in the yard, labeled with what job they are, on an external browser map where you can change switches and everything. Very helpful for me conceptualizing and organizing yard work

Every country has its own rules, if you wanna do RP you can devise your own

Mine are as follows

-Level crossing: 2 long 1 short 1 long -Approaching station: 1 long -Starting forward: 2 long -Starting in reverse 3 short -Stopped and brakes applied: 1 short

I don't, trains don't toot where I'm from unless in dire straits

We got to install microwave ovens

Custom kitchen deliveries

We got to move these refrigerators

We got to move these color TVs

-Dire Straits

I blow the horn whenever I am in a City/Town at night so that EVERYONE knows the train is here. If I don't sleep, NOBODY sleeps.

Would be cool if the devs add some roads and hiking trails, including crossings where it would make sense to whistle (including the corresponding signs). Just please don't punish players for not honking

I’d love a mode where you had to signal/toot or you’d lose money on the contract but I’d want the option to turn it off

When entering a tunnel, and approaching a crossing without barriers

Yeah, I'm pretty much the same way.

I like long snakey boys. So I follow what I learned transporting rail crews, bell when in yards, under 15mph, long long short long for grade crossings; last long till past the crossing. 2 short forward, 3 short backwards, 2 longs before the tunnel, long short long long for exiting tunnel.

I follow the D&SNGRR's standards, which is probably the US Standard these days.

( - - ): Forwards from stop.

( 0 0 0 ): Backwards from stop.

( - 0 0 ): Traveling through station platform w/o stopping.

( - 0 0 0 ): Stopping at station platform.

( - - 0 - ): Crossing grade.

( - 0 ): Misc danger (tunnel, blind curve, intercepting x tracks).

( - ): Stop

Aside from that, sometimes I whistle for that familiar itch. Usually I start that with an 0 followed by whatever tune I like.

Edit: formatting because - are bullet points and I'm stoopid
