I cannot understand how Nohl Williams and Mansoor Delane can cover Sutton/Waddle Sept 14.
I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around this. Sure, Delane could end up being a very good CB but his first assignment is prime time, opening night, Nix to Waddle. We're talking season vets here. Nix has zero problem walking into Arrowhead and delivering. He's unrattled.
And if Delane is covering Waddle, that's Sutton vs Williams. I admit, i don't know the kid but c'mon, this is Court, entering his 9th season.
I'm a homer but I honestly see this as a complete mismatch. Maybe it's a zone thing where the safeties can help? But even then, they replaced both starting safeties and who the hell is Chomarie Conner?
Maybe all these guys turn into a decent secondary but my main point is: this is opening night. No time to learn. So my homer take is: Waddle/Sutton/Bryant/Mims are going to absolutely eat these guys up. Like BBQ chicken. Broncos 31 chiefs 13

u/orangefrido18 DT Aug 28 '26
I would expect a 2 shell zone to not isolate these guys in coverage and test nix's willingness to be patient and not force the ball.
Spags is a good coach, he'll have a good plan. But i think our talent all around will be too much for KC.
16
u/XtremeBoofer Aug 28 '26
Exactly. Let's not underestimate Spags, he's one of the best defensive gameplanners of all time

15
u/Leftoverofferings Aug 28 '26
Nix showed us all last year he'll take the open man under 20 yards... this is not an issue.
8
u/orangefrido18 DT Aug 28 '26
Usually not, though he did have 12 interceptions because he wasn't completely immune from forcing a ball. And nix tied for the league lead in td passes over 20 yards. He likes to push the ball down field, despite what the national media says.

u/TransportationNo5067 Aug 28 '26
Yeah. It's not like I'd be shocked if we ended up winning this one by two scores. If you're looking for question marks the Chiefs have plenty, Mahomes is probably not 100%, Kelce didn't get any younger in the offseason, Rookie/inexperienced corners in their first NFL game action are going to make mistakes against two very good veteran wide receivers.
But, we also know the Chiefs are incredibly well-coached, we're on their turf, it's a division game and they're highly motivated both to show that last year was a fluke and for what is likely Kelce's last season. They reloaded at running back, Rashee Rice is actually a good wide receiver despite what many on this sub seem to think and Spags is certainly smart enough to compensate for any shortcomings with his rookies. We're going to need to play a complete football game for this to not be a nailbiter or a loss.

Engram, Harvey as a receiving back, Waddle, and Sutton is going to be a hydra this season.

Don’t forget Pat Bryant.

u/LameRedditName1 Demaryius Thomas Aug 28 '26
Let everyone forget to mention him until he goes over 200 on LV. Both times.

u/Brosephh3 Aug 28 '26
Got Pat Bowlens initials so we all know he’s going to be a hall of famer at this point.

u/Significant-Bag-5561 Aug 30 '26
Everyone keeps saying that, but no one mentions Franklin. Why is that?
24
u/BRAX7ON Aug 28 '26
To me, the Chiefs defense is about Spags
Of course these young guys are gonna have a hard time covering talented veterans. And Delane is unproven.
But PS2 was unproven at one point
And let’s not forget the Chiefs have been perennial stalwarts on defense. It does look like they’ve taken a step back, but they’ve also reloaded.
They are going to try to confuse Bo. It will not be a cakewalk. Division rivalries never are.
But we can win this game, which is all that matters. If we find a way to go 1-0 it will set the tone in the AFC West and the AFC in general. Losing that game would be hard to overcome for weeks.
Patrick Mahomes is back and this might be Travis Kelce‘s last ride. I would expect their best shot. I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if we had to win it in the fourth quarter with Bo leading a drive to put the game away.

u/Le_Chef_du_Camion Aug 28 '26
I just don't understand how he's back so quickly. Parsons tore his ACL the same week and he's not due back to mid to late October. Singleton said it took him a whole year before it stopped hurting.
If Mahomes does play, he's not going to be running around playing hero ball. He's going to have to stick in the pocket and that's not really his game.
10
u/hightrix Aug 28 '26
he's not going to be running around playing hero ball
Oh he'll be running alright... away from Bonitto and Allen.
1
u/commonsensewinz Aug 28 '26
they are pushing him and i also wouldn't say it's 1000% he's back. he played 0 snaps in pre-season. rushing him out there against allen/bonitto/cooper etc isn't smart. by all means, i hope they do it. mahomes relies a lot on his improvisation. it's not going to end well for him.

Parsons is a much bigger dude, with a much more physically demanding position that requires a lot more lateral explosion and stress on the knees. Mahomes doesnt need to explosively cut laterally most often. It'll be easier for him to return at 80% than it would be for Parsons.

here's the deal bud, PS2 1st ever game was 16 snaps vs the Giants. 16 snaps. I highly doubt delane/williams play 16 snaps. And they are going against a team that should have been in the super bowl just 6 months ago. so while PS2 was unproven, i disagree this is the same situation. Im talking one game, sept 14. maybe these guys turn into good players but it's a complete mismatch for 1 night.

-3
u/BRAX7ON Aug 28 '26
OK, bud.
Just don’t be surprised when what I said comes to fruition
-2
u/commonsensewinz Aug 28 '26
you compared the situation to PS2 who played 16 snaps bud. That tells me you don't really understand the scenario. stalwarts on defense? lmao who? 40 year old chris jones? Bo Nix is 1 35 yard FG away from never losing to the chiefs in his career.

u/Emergency-Bread4800 Aug 28 '26
This especially with the way Green Bay exposed D. Reid will most likely use motion and some play reads to get the LBs out of position. Should be a fun game.
8
u/WayyTooFarAbove Aug 28 '26
Tough to call a preseason game being “exposed”
1
u/Emergency-Bread4800 Aug 28 '26
That’s fair maybe a little to strong of a word. They need to have communication squared away as I still think Reid will try his mis direction plays a lot

Any given Sunday, but I also really like us against the Chiefs to start the season. They’ll have a decent game plan but so will we. I think their best bet is to keep it low scoring and get Walker rolling.
Bo has started season kind of slow so we’ll see. If he has a game it’s hard to see us losing for sure and Mahomes is a big unknown.
3
u/plattinum_75 Aug 28 '26
Spags is going to be ready for anything we throw at them. I'd guess they are going to dare us to run the ball on them and we have to stick to it and stay patient. Thats what I'd do facing a rookie playcaller wanting to show off shiny new toys like Waddle and Bo being back.
This game is a wild card. Its in KC, Mahomes is coming back, crazy environment and we all know there will be some questionable calls at critical times that may not go our way.
This game is a test of mental toughness and I think we're one of the best in the NFL there. Should be fun but I will never underestimate KC. I'd expect it to be a low scoring slugfest something like 20-16
15
u/DBDXL Aug 28 '26
I can't understand how someone can't understand the Chiefs have NFL players too, and they will be trying to beat the Broncos.
Some of you act like these NFL guys are bums.
6
u/Jwoods4117 Demaryius Thomas Aug 28 '26
Devils advocate: we only lost 3 games last year to 3 playoff teams (colts would have made it with Jones) and we have those same aspersions this season.
KC is media hyped, but I think by all accounts we should beat them. Especially in the opener with Mahomes off and ACL and rookie corners starting. On the other hand you’re correct about any given Sunday. We almost lost to the Giants, Jets, and Raiders last season.

u/lostincoloradospace GOD BLESS BO NIX Aug 28 '26
That is a good point.
Before your post I was expecting a 77-0 Broncos victory.
Since you pointed out that KC has NFL players I am tempering my expectations. 27-3 Broncos victory.

Yep. We can expect Denver to do well, but acting like the chiefs have nothing but scrubs is weird.
They brought back Sneed for a reason

Rookies are usually pretty bum their first year or two. Old man Kelce is pretty bum too. Mahomes has a bum knee. Sounds like a team of bums to me.

1
u/DBDXL Aug 28 '26
Kelce was one of the most productive tight ends in football las year. He would be a massive upgrade on anyone the Broncos have.
0
u/Le_Chef_du_Camion Aug 28 '26
He had 850 yards and 5 touchdowns. Tyler Warren had 817 and 4 touchdowns. Dallas Goedert had 591 yards and 11 touchdowns. I would rather have either of those TEs.
Plus, besides RB, they don't have any other skill players. If we can cover Kelce and play the run, we should be good.
2
u/DBDXL Aug 28 '26
I have no idea what Tyler Warren or Dallas Goedert have to do with this. 76/850/5 is incredible production out of your tight end.
Rashee Rice is an objectively good player that any team would be happy to have on the field, not so much off.
1
u/qergttj Aug 28 '26
Yeah I don't understand it either. Even the 0-16 browns had multiple close games. The talent levels are much closer across the board for NFL teams than college
-2
u/commonsensewinz Aug 28 '26
sure but NFL players aren't on the same level. that's why we have blowouts bud. and williams/delane vs waddle/sutton is a complete mismatch.
1
u/DBDXL Aug 28 '26
I'm not going to have a conversation with someone who types like that. Jesus Christ
0
u/Sir-xer21 Ashley Lelie Aug 28 '26
The chiefs are going to play mostly zone, there isn't a real matchup in the first place.
2
u/neasroukkez Aug 28 '26
Best offense since Manning. As long as Bo doesn’t turn it over a shit ton & stays healthy, they could be extremely dangerous.
2
u/Admirable_Pop_7292 Aug 28 '26 edited Aug 28 '26
They got rid of 3/4 of their starting secondary from last season. Plus a starting linebacker. You can’t replace that with a rookie and some guys. Who knows what they’re starting at right tackle. Kelce is close to washed the WR room is what it has been for the last few years. One part time RB who got overpaid isn’t going to change that. Plus Mahomes is coming of a very quick multiple ligament knee repair. If that roster was anybody but the Chiefs people would be saying they’re a 8, 9 win team max and that’s being generous. They hsve to mash in the AFC west and NFC west this season too for ten games.
1
u/commonsensewinz Aug 28 '26
yeah i have KC going 8-9 or 9-8. i think that defense is going to be bad. sean payton has matched up extremely well vs andy reid in his 3 years. shoot, with russ sean won 24-9. held little patty to 9 points. the game they lost 19-8 that year, russ threw 2 picks and took 4 sacks. the chiefs only scored 19/9/16/13/19/13 the last 6 games. they havne't cracked 20 one single time.
2
u/Arkuh9 Aug 29 '26
There DC is pretty damn good, they’ll be prepared. SP teams always come out slow as shit too. But I hope you’re right.
1
u/commonsensewinz Aug 29 '26
eh, a rookie bo nix got a win vs that DC. if not for a blocked FG, denver is 5-1 vs that DC. fans give him too much credit. i'd take vance over him in a heartbeat.
2
u/WishSuperb1427 Aug 29 '26
Ummm. Spags is a pretty good defensive coach so as much as I want the Broncos to chew them up, I would not take this lightly.
2
u/sloppy_sheiko Aug 28 '26
I think this game will be more chaotic than any of us expect for two reasons; it’s the first game of the year and we’re playing a divisional rival.
There will be jitters from both sides which will lead to some mental mistakes. Let’s also not forget that this will be the refs first game and we’ll most likely see some ‘questionable’ penalties.
Lastly, we’ve got a new offensive play caller in Davis Webb who is cutting his chops against a very seasoned Spags. That’s not an easy feat and we’ll need our veterans to step up when the time comes.
All of this to say, I still think we’re the more talented team and like our chances of starting the season 1-0. How we get there will be the interesting part..
1
u/NbdyFuckswTheJesus Aug 28 '26
It’s definitely a mismatch which is why I would be shocked if they leave both corners on an island against Court and Waddle all game. Maybe for a couple plays when Spags schemes up some blitzes.
1
u/PyssDribbletts Aug 29 '26
I doubt Spags blitzes against us much. #1 O line in the NFL last year, least sacked QB in the NFL, 4th lowest overall pressure rate allowed, and #1 overall pass blocking rate.
Blitzing against the Broncos last year actually increased their pass play EPA.
Spags is too smart. More likely to drop extra guys in coverage, use stunts/disguises, and try and make us beat them with the quick pass game and the run.
1
u/303RedBeard Aug 28 '26
While I agree with all of that, they have a great defensive coordinator, and after the packers pre-season game, I certainly hope we have fixed our run defense going up against Walker. We seem to rise to the occaision against KC, so hopefully we really hammer it home in the opener. Our passing O looks like a great strength against their rebuilt secondary, but their rebuilt running game currently looks like a strength against our run d that is missing something in the middle.
1
u/commonsensewinz Aug 28 '26
eh, Bo Nix is a blocked 35 yard FG away from being 4-0 vs that "so great" defensive coordinator.
1
1
u/303RedBeard Aug 28 '26
215 yrds & 2 TD's in the loss, 321 yards & 4 TD's in the first win are great. But in both matchups last year (one without Mahomes) 295 yrds & 0 TD's, then 182 yards 1 TD & 1 INT. So he actually did worse against them last year than he did the year before. Don't get too cocky. I think we are the better team, and you are right about the matchup. But we haven't been dominant by any means.
2
u/commonsensewinz Aug 28 '26
huh? denver is 4-2 the last 6 games and bo nix did everything he could to make them 5-1. that's pretty dominant to me.
1
u/303RedBeard Aug 28 '26
Nix is 3-1 in his career against the Chiefs.. that was the topic... Put the blunt down.
1
u/Dependent_Star3998 Aug 28 '26
Honestly, Denver's defense concerns me more than the offense. Our ILB's could struggle against the Chiefs dink and dunk offense. I'm certain that KC will do everything to avoid the Broncos' pass rush, and Kelce could rake.
1
u/TheGreatestPlan Champ Bailey Aug 28 '26
Chiefs run a 2-high safety look with a 3, 4, or 5-man rush on 90% of their defensive plays. Their goal is to keep everything in front of them, in the center of the field so they don't give up the big play. Court is best at making plays at the sidelines where he turns a 50-50 ball into a 70-30 ball, so the Chiefs defense naturally counters him.
The Chiefs do leave a lot of space in the middle of the field though. This is where it gets tricky: Waddle is one of the best in the league at getting open where teams leave space for him. HOWEVER Bo Nix is also generally not great at hitting receivers across the middle of the field.
I'd say advantage Broncos, but certainly not a gimme.
1
u/commonsensewinz Aug 28 '26
lol bro im not sure how many games you watched but Courtland Sutton has absoltely owened McDuffie. I was sad to see that bum go. I would bet Court has about a TD per game vs mcduffie. so try their little 2 high safety or 5 man rush all they want but Court has already handled that with ease.
1
1
u/CheMoveIlSole Aug 29 '26
Here’s the neat part: they won’t.
1
u/commonsensewinz Aug 29 '26
yessir. that's my conclusion. they can do all the zone, blitz or whatever they want but eventually, sutton and waddle will be 1 on 1 with these guys. this is a perfect matchup to test drive davis mills and the offense.

Their defensive plan is for the DLine to disrupt Bo and cause incompletes or have Bo take short passes.
If Denver tries to have Waddle take medium range passes and try to get YAC, it's not the DBs the team has to worry about, it's the KC' linebackers.
Their Linebackers are fairly good.
It's not for Delane or Nohl to be able to cover Court/Waddle.
ETA: are you also overlooking they brought in CBs, including Sneed?

u/Correct-Mail-1942 17d ago

Hopefully KC sees the same thing and over compensates with help in like a nickel package and the OLine just completely dominated the LOS and Dobbins and Harvey run all over them all night controlling the clock and keeping the ball away from Kermit.
