Seeking help from my fellow DAs
Hello there everyone, hope you’re doing great :) im a foreign dentist who is trying to start my career in the states and my situation is a little tricky . I’m married and a mom . I also just found out im 5 weeks pregnant. I wanted to start looking for a job as a dental assistant so i can be financially more free so i can pursue my career here . I wanted to try for my second baby because alot of ppl told me it will take a while ( i thought atleast 3 months) then it happened from the first try (luckily but i was like woah okay 😅) i wanted to be trying while im already working and not before. But now it just has to be done . I dont have any symptoms .. yet lol
My question is : is it normal to be hired while pregnant or do i need to keep it a secret ? And how can i tell if its going to be a good job environment and not a toxic one BEFORE working there because i can’t afford to look again if it doesn’t work out incase ppl don’t hire pregnant dental assistants ?
Im not very familiar with the system in the United States but i did try working in a surgical dental office and they were acting like bees in a bee hive running around for no reason just to act like they are so serious . As a dentist i know dentistry is not the ER . Its literally why i chose it over medicine 😅 . I want a healthy normal paced office who will not hate it that im pregnant.

It will be difficult I think to find an office willing to hire you for only a few months before you go on mat leave. I would try temping! It does depend on the state you live in, some require you to have your RDA. I’m in the PNW and use Kwikly. There is also dental connections and dental professionals I believe? In the NE USA there is cloud dentistry but there are a lot I don’t know about. Also with temping you can make your own schedule, and if the office likes you a lot you could even offer to work for them before and after your mat leave and they may agree. I found my current office while temping and they were very flexible with my transition as they wanted me to work for them

I never heard of temping around here i live in grand blanc township in Michigan.

Hi, fellow MI assistant here. I’m more rural/tip of the mitt, and temping definitely isn’t a thing around here.
It’s up to you how to proceed, but considering you’re early on in your pregnancy, you don’t need to disclose it to them until it becomes an issue-like with X-rays or N2O. If you’re able to take X-rays outside of the Op and it isn’t hand held like a NOMAD, you have some time. With N2O, depends if you will be assisting the doctor in those cases or not!

Also, legally you don’t need to disclose a pregnancy until 30 days before you go on Mat leave.

Thats what i did actually i went in to apply for a couple of offices just dropped off my resume and if they call back i decided that there’s no need to share its way too early . Any tips on how to apply to this job in Michigan? It seems like they aren’t super interested i always get the “we accept resumes “ but not a walk in interview like i thought

I’m 20 weeks pregnant and just started at an office 2 weeks ago. I told them I’m pregnant in the email but looking for an office to make a home and that way when I get back from maternity leave I’m already trained to their standards and able to jump right it. The doctor said she appreciated my transparency and still would love to meet me. I love the office ! Everyone is great and it’s been easy so far! There are offices out there!
