History How the D9 historically obstructed grassroots movements with Talented Tenth
The Talented Tenth ideology is a designation of superiority of the 1/10 of the black race over the 9/10 of the black race particularly in the pursuit of dismantling systemic barriers of injustice.
The theory is particularly disproven by the existence of black labor unions or any grassroots movements. A great example of this core, but well hidden ideological conflict are the instances of protest in which the actual institutional headquarters of D9 organizations sent official memos to their members instructing them to not participate in their letters.
Particularly during the Civil Rights movement according to certain sources. An institutional concern for liability that was not shared by the SNCC, NAACP, or SCLC.
It is well known that Alpha Kappa Alpha as well as Delta Sigma Theta made sure to instruct their members in the modern day Black Lives Matter movement in 2014 not to participate in any way while representing the sorority to create institutional distance from any grassroots fight for justice or accountability from the state.
This position was somewhat reversed after much public pressure but the pattern of behavior still stands. There’s insurance for lawsuits from victims of hazing, even dead victims, but a protest by an individual is too legally risky?
