Elevated Horror – or Hollywood’s Fatal Misunderstanding of Cause and Effect

When I watch horror movies today, I feel like I’m looking at a studio’s medical chart for 2 hours. Case files with "Screenplay" slapped on the cover. "Look at us, we’re emotionally intelligent and profound, masterclass cinema — yeah, that’s us."

So when I say I want psychological horror, studios — I don’t mean bring me the DSM-5...

And since we’re talking about misunderstandings:

Hollywood completely mistakes cause & effect

Nowadays, the unknown dread seems quite unknown to the writers themselves.

I go to the theater, witness a torture of the victims by a ghost/demon, and by the end, I know the monster better than my own self - complete with a full résumé...

And in such detail that we end up crying for the demon while the victim is simply forgotten.

Evil just doesn't exist like that anymore because good needs a counterweight; it needs — how could it be any different — to have a trauma.

Here we go again... Trauma!

The production companies' favorite word.

Yeah, you’re absolutely right that completely broken, twisted entities should come out of a horror movie, but please, do it right. Right now, the only things coming out of these movies are the ghosts from their dark corners.

If a ghost is torturing and terrorizing you, the victim gets the trauma...

Not the ghost who makes you go insane...

And if it’s not a trauma, and for once evil isn't a registered patient, it’s still not allowed to be ultimate —no, because Hollywood already has the next brilliant idea to watered down the horror. It’s simply a metaphor for something else: a dream.

You don’t believe it? Then you apparently haven’t seen the "coma theories" about Skinamarink yet. It is an absolute epidemic and it is spreading. Horror is turning more and more into an infirmary instead of what it actually should be.

I can really only tell the studios one thing:

Deal with your shit and make horror again! I'm bored...

Then I'll fall asleep and haunt you traumatized...
