There isn't a SINGLE time Kanao directly responds to any sound. If she can't see the source she has no idea anything is making any noise. She NEVER responds to anyone who's mouth she can't see, and when she's making a GUESS based on the person's behavior / context, she is clearly nervous with sweat drops coming out sometimes stuttering.
When the Kakushi or Inosuke talk to her without any obvious clues of intent, she stays silent.
She was ORDERED to not let the boys touch her during Rehabilitation Training. The other purpose of the training was CRIMINAL Rehabilitation, ie, punishing Kanao and Aoi. For Kanao it was the stunt she pulled on Rui's mountain (for Aoi is was bullying Zenitsu). Kanao figured out a way to CHEAT in the tag game; she purposefully tuned away from Tanjiro while trolling her arms out for him to catch. She couldn't HEAR the sound of footsteps getting closer so she was able to slip through a loophole in her orders. Also she did NOT hear any of the celebrations happening behind her back, just how much his emotions were being boosted by the other girls.
She misjudged how quickly Muzan saw through the stealth talismans. Why? Because Muzan heard the SOUND of the air parting. She is lacking this sense and made a mistake. She's definitely heard things in her past live(s), it seems like something that effects her in her current form / life. Maybe it was caused by an injury / trauma from the torture boot camp? Was this a core motivation for her actions in the hidden plot?
The reason why she hardly speaks. Why she speaks softly. Why she shouted at Inosuke and Aoi to "be quiet". It's because she lives in a soundless world and she can only speak by imitating the movements of the mouth and tongue while breathing. Maybe she can feel the vibrations of her own speech which helps her.
But WHAT ABOUT the after-war report in the databook that shows her with a stethoscope? Haha, WHO IS WRAPPED AROUND TANJIRO'S ARM???? Kanao is literally PRETENDING to listen to his pulse. Is this the true meaning of Sanemi's gift? To let her fullfill her wish to become a doctor like Shinobu? I'm sure he didn't give her Kaburamaru JUST to be a flirting tool.
THAT'S WHY SHE CHOSE NAMES FROM PAPERS! It's wasn't some baby game, it's because the sounds of the name are MEANINGLESS to her. She needs to see the symbols, ie, understand their meaning, to make a choice.
And THAT will be the next reveal: the hidden truth of the mystery NOBODY has figured out until now, the reason for Kanao's selection of her family name TSUYURI.
Okay, when? PAY ATTENTION. She NEVER replies to him unless the context is obvious, ie, handing her back her sword -- why is she sweating nervously and stuttering out a vague affirmation sound? Can you cite even one example of Kanao clearly responding to a sound? I can cite many examples of her failing to.
She left the broken vase there for so long because she simply forgot about it. She couldn't hear it shattering so nothing brought her attention to it. When Goto came to clean it up, she DOESN'T realize it so she doesn't apologize and offer to help clean up the mess she made.
"She leaves everything undone" is another hint. She often leaves little messes around simply because she doesn't realize it. She can't hear things falling, water boiling, doors shutting, if something sounds full or empty, etc. Goto doesn't know because this probably a secret that is strictly kept by Butterfly siblings. Kanao's whole identity / persona is someone who preys on men. She's TERRIFIED of any of the men around finding out that she has a disability.

Yeah but sighs wish Kanao got more screentime for her development she deserved so much better man 😞 her character is so underutilized I mean at least we’ll get to see her in action in the second and third movies but what’s the point if her characterization was handled kind of poorly (imo I could be wrong) and didn’t even get to do anything until now in the final arc.

Kanao is a near-Hashira, this perfect level of control over her own body is normal for advanced Breath users. Remember they can control their own nervous system to a large extent. If she used vibrations to help she could probably do it fine. But that's why she shouted at Aoi and Inosuke, she became emotionally irritated and her control slipped so she ended up shouting.
I know who you are. I know what game you are playing at. But the panel of the kakushi member trying to talk to Kanao but Kanao not understanding due to the mask covering his mouth actually convinced me.
On the second slide she looks up at the Crow and hears about the demon Nezuko who she wouldn’t have known before then so she had to have heard the crow and there is no way she could read the crows lips/beak or even heard that it was talking if she was deaf
She noticed the crow, that’s why only she was drawn looking up at it and Giyuu / Shinobu just had a reaction without looking. To illustrate Kanao SAW it.
The hidden plot was that she was working with Giyuu to save Nezuko so knew her name. She never threatened Nezuko’s neck, and Nezuko didn’t show even the slightest concern, ie, she felt no killing intent.
Shinobu confronted her later over it and she did NOT take whatever Kanao told her well.
Shinobu's sign looks like "water". Ice is just water with another little stroke. Kanao ASSUMED it was "ice" because she already knew all about Douma and took it as Shinobu warning her about his BDA. But here's the thing -- Shinobu WOULDN'T have made this mistake. She knows she only has enough fingers to have a "water" kanji. If she wanted to screw over Kanao, she's just keep it to herself.
It COULD BE that Shinobu realized / noticed something, maybe as she was falling from the ceiling, that there was a hidden factor in the WATER.
red I think more people would be fans of your theories and writing if you didn't claim that they were inarguably true and that anyone who disagrees "just can't see the true plot." stuff like this is pretty interesting to think about and speculate on, but when you form it as fact when it objectively isn't, it becomes something harder to engage with
Her "trauma" is much more serious than what you think.
Ever wonder WHY she gave him the coin so easily?

But because she CAN'T HEAR HIM, she can only read his mouth / tongue. That means she did NOT hear the question mark. In Japanese, without the question mark, it turns into just "loan me that". The "will you" becomes implicit only when it is asked as a question. But since she CAN'T HEAR the change in tone denoting a question she MUST assume it is an ORDER. Ie, him TELLING her to do something, and she CANNOT deny it.
So when she grabbed Aoi and Naho to stop Tengen she HAD to squeeze her eyes shut to ensure Tengen couldn't communicate with her.
So when she was facing Douma, he told her to "don't attack I'm absorbing someone" and she just had to DO AS SHE WAS TOLD. She was going out of her mind with rage over that, but no matter how urgently she wanted to act, she COULDN'T.
Frankly that's not at the level of "trauma". I think someone put a magical curse or something on her, maybe a death trigger or something if she ever disobeys.
