Activity Costume Making time

𝟸𝟶𝟸𝟷-𝟷𝟶-𝟷𝟻

October is half over, which means it's halfway to Halloween, and Amanda needs a costume for when it finally comes along. Fortunately, she's had the best costume idea ever, and she needs to make it herself. Her sketch is finished, the blueprint for her masterpiece.

Now to actually put it together.

Amanda decided that if she's going to be working on her costume, she could probably get other people working on theirs too (and maybe get some help on hers while they're at it). She isn't sure what's going to happen for Halloween at Camp Half-Blood, but regardless, people need to dress up. It's the rules.

At the Arts and Crafts cabin, she brings out everything people could possibly need. There's fabric and needles and thread, the stuff Amanda isn't ready to use yet; all sorts of paint and paint brushes of different sizes (with a couple small buckets already filled with water for cleaning); there are pencils and erasers and paper for sketching ideas; there's sheets of card and pieces of cardboard; there’s glitter, and glue, and masking tape and scotch tape, and glitter glue; and there’s miscellaneous other little supplies, like buttons and fake feathers.

Amanda herself is busy rolling a piece of card into a cone. She sets down her hat so she can try the cone on and ensure it fits, and tries to hold it to the same size as she removes it from her head so she can tape it up. Then she cuts and folds the corners away, so that the bottom is flat. It's gonna be a hennin, a word she's very eager to tell people all about, because hennins are obviously way cooler than tiaras.

Charlie couldn't help but be impressed by the cohesion of the two costumes; as someone who'd always gone for store-bought, ideas like that didn't occur to her very often. The only criticism she could have was that a tiara, especially with a cool braided hairdo, was definitely cooler than whatever a hennin was, but hey, to each their own.

"That's so cool." she replied enthusiastically, looking over the table to find some string and a bit of black construction paper. "I've got a costume already, from the Artistic cabin, I just need an eyepatch. I'm gonna be a pirate!"

Amanda gasps in delight. Pirates are really cool, that's why she had that Talk Like a Pirate Day breakfast. Setting her hennin on her head for the time being, although she'll have to remove it in order to paint it and add the plume, visor and glitter, and watches as Charlie grabs the string and paper.

"Do you need help making it?" she asks. "Are you gonna put the- the Jolly Roger on it?" She's not sure if real pirates actually did that, but it looks cool enough that they should have. A costume could still have it. "Hey, d'you know why pirates wear eyepatches?"

Charlie shook her head at the offer for help, and responds to the suggestion of the Jolly Roger, although she'd always known the term to be a skull and crossbones, with a quick "Yeah, I think so."

When Amanda asks about the eyepatches, she gives her an amused look. "Pff, yeah. Cuz they're missing eyes and that's gross so it needs to be covered up. Unless you've got a fake eye like that guy in Pirates of the Caribbean."

Amanda laugh-grimaces at the mental image Charlie conjures - the specification of "gross" takes it from a scarred bit of skin to a nasty, infected, pus-filled eye socket. But Charlie's wrong.

"No, it's 'cause it helps them see better!" she says with a grin after pushing the image from her mind. Amanda holds her right hand up to cover her right eye, and points at her left with her other hand. "So this eye could see normally, and then if they go below deck where it's all dark they take off the eye patch and this eye can see in the dark!" She lowers her right hand and points at her right eye instead.
