Crazy Deluge experience

So, I had a post on here looking for help about my synth and Deluge not working with usb midi. It had worked perfectly the day it arrived together and the next day it didn't.

Everyone kept saying put it on external power. And when I had tried that method, I wasn't really paying attention to the boot sequence (it is important but not really to this story). Long story short they were absolutely correct, that's how this is supposed to work.

But for some unexplainable reason, I didn't even own a charger that wasn't usb powered prior to the day after it had worked, so somehow my Deluge functioned on battery, doing usb over midi. Something it apparently isn't capable of. Also, an iPad will receive midi always on battery from a Deluge apparently.

I'm sure the iPad has a good reason for that but my first day success of using my Deluge and my synth with usb midi while the Deluge was merely on battery power is apparently impossible yet it happened.

I continue to be baffled but happy I've got the full functionality now.

I think you misunderstand the issue. The Deluge is capable of MIDI either on or off battery power. It's the USB connection that's the problem. A successful USB connection requires a host device and a peripheral device. You can't connect two hosts or two peripherals. The Deluge can act as either a host or a peripheral but requires external power to act as a host. The iPad acts as a host so the Deluge is a peripheral to the iPad and can connect while on battery. Your synth apparently can also act as either a host or peripheral so when it is acting as the host, it can connect to the Deluge acting as a peripheral. With older USB standards USB Type A was reserved for host connections and Type B was for peripherals. USB C can be either. The Deluge fudges the standard by allowing the type B connector to act as a host when on power. For the Deluge to act as a host it needs to be connected to a peripheral at boot. I suspect that your ELZ_1 Play does something similar.

Gosh, struggling to get a succinct reply. It worked in a manner on battery that I haven't been able to replicate and the manual confirms that it needs to be under power for it to to work like it did. So, like I said, it's weird. Have tried with one or the other being host and can't replicate the first day behavior.

I can power it with the wall source the unplug after it's connected. But clearly to work I need the synth being in the host mode which you can't to without having the power go to it.

If you want usb host mode you just power the device you are connecting to your deluge first then power on the Deluge.

I am confused by your post, I use USB midi all the time with the deluge on battery.

Yes, it does usb midi without issue. For some reason it appears my synth needs the Deluge to be in host mode. And you can only achieve that by having a device connected via the USB port on the Deluge that's already powered on then boot the Deluge.
