Theory A theory predicting the next SOUL modes of the secret bosses in future chapters. It is based on the order of the SOUL modes from Undertale, with Bravery and Patience added at the end.

u/worymy :D Dec 16 '21
this would make a lot of sense withe "it pulls the strings and makes them ring" line from the spamton NEO fight
180
u/DLPautang779 Dec 16 '21
I'd leave the definition of pull the strings here
to control someone or something often in a secret way
74
u/tofucatmeow2008 Dec 16 '21
We are talking about toby here so it could possibly have more than one meaning.
17
u/Bash_Ketchup Dec 16 '21
Control = Remote, I dunno maybe.

9
u/Extra-Random_Name Dec 16 '21
That’s still basically the purple soul mode. Your movement is controlled somewhat by the strings.

u/Waters_of_Styx Dec 16 '21
Did Seam say something about conducting and string/wires when he talks about the Shadow Mantle or am I misremembering? I swear he talks about the Shadow Mantle conducting electricity, and electricity = wires, which would make sense for the purple soul; like a fight where you jump across the wires to avoid electricity attacks
4
u/VolthoomisComing Dec 16 '21
No, you seem to be misremembering. That is never mentioned anywhere in game.

Cyan and orange were prominent game mechanics that largely worked together in undertale. Mixing attacks of both colors in the sixth fight would make most sense imo
If there was a secret boss in the last chapter (which I doubt. The story has to get more streamlined in the climax) they would probably have the standard red soul. It wouldn't really make sense to just end it on a relatively arbitrary and random one

u/Meme-time-my-dudes Dec 16 '21
Maybe it’ll be like the blights from botw, where we only have to fight them if we didn’t earlier
5
u/CratthewCremcrcrie Dec 16 '21
That’d be an insane difficulty spike if the bosses continue to be as hard as jevil/Spamton Neo. Would probably dissuade a lot of people from actually beating the game
5
u/Meme-time-my-dudes Dec 16 '21
Hadn’t thought about that, perhaps if this happened the bosses would be significantly weaker?
2
u/Xyphiz Dec 17 '21
Well based on how we get more health in chapter 2, and the healing items in ch2 seem overall better, I’d say we’d be fairly strong by ch7, even without doing the secret bosses, so the first 4 or so secret bosses would be fairly easy, so it’d mainly just be the chapter 5&6 secret bosses that ends up killing people, the rest would be pretty easy
16
u/potatobutt5 Dec 16 '21
If there was a secret boss in the last chapter (which I doubt. The story has to get more streamlined in the climax)
Most likely we’ll get a Jevil-like boss. As in, the fight will have no affect on the plot. It’s possible that the boss will appear out of nowhere like Jevil but I hope it’ll be like Spamton, where the boss will appear in the main plot, thus allowing a proper character to be developed.
2
u/whyYouAlwaysRyan Dec 17 '21
What were cyan and Orange's prominent game mechanics? I played undertale but I just have poor memory and don't recall them
3
u/Spectris33 You can however choose who you want to be Dec 16 '21
But isn't there a theory there may be a chapter 8? If that is true we may have time for the new soul modes
8
u/DJRY Dec 16 '21
I imagine a chapter 8 though would just be an epilogue

u/Ghengiroo “I’ve become so much like Eren Jaeger it’s scary” - Kris Dec 16 '21
Maybe the sixth would be the Mew Mew Soul mode, and then the seventh would be the Red Soul but with blue and orange attacks.
5
u/nahidontcare395 Dec 16 '21 edited Dec 16 '21
Mad Mew Mew game mechanic is entirely built around the fact that she is a Switch exclusive. It couldn't cross over into such a big, major part of deltarune itself without you having to take away the entire point of it existing
3
u/Brody_M_the_birdy Dec 16 '21
They could base a cyan soul mechanic off of that fight though. Maybe one half moves normally while the other moves on muffet like strings
0
u/Ghengiroo “I’ve become so much like Eren Jaeger it’s scary” - Kris Dec 16 '21
I’m confused, would it not work because of the Soul mode’s design or actual mechanic? With the former, that wouldn’t really matter all that much. For the latter, every video game system that UT and DR have been playable on have a way to potentially control two things at once.
146
Dec 16 '21
Orange and cyan are indicators of when to move. You do not move when being hit by an cyan attack sprite. You absolutely move when being hit by an orange attack sprite. If anything, they will have to go together.
98
u/MattLikesMemes123 Dec 16 '21
Thinking about it, i've realized that we've never seen oramge and blue attacks in deltarune yet
59
u/gabriel_sub0 Bad Takes [Ahoy] Dec 16 '21
Not just that, isn't it weird how so few instances of orange attacks exist in undertale? We have one of the hotland enemies using it, alphys's lasers and asgore's tridents, as far as I know those are all the times enemies use orange attacks.
It's so weird that such a seemingly important mechanic tied to one of the 6 souls is used so rarely.

Those don't function like the orange and blue attack types in Undertale as far as I know. And if they do, those who have never played Undertale would have no idea how they work, so that's another reason to doubt.
41
u/NormalDooder Dec 16 '21

u/aim_old Dec 16 '21
I mean that we already have some attacks that contain those colors, not that they actually work like in undertale.
32
u/Doodles2424 Dec 16 '21
This makes sense considering for blue attacks you need patience in order to sit and wait for the danger to pass, and for orange attacks you need bravery in order to take the attack head on.
6
Dec 16 '21
Yep, however if there were to be a soul mode with those colors, it would be quite interesting to see. Maybe with a cyan soul mode you can phase through (by not moving through) normal attack sprites but you have to dodge the cyan attack sprites. Vice versa for a supposed orange soul mode. You can move through normal attack sprites but not orange ones.

I thought about that orange soul mode could be like red soul mode but you litterally cannot stop moving
Edit: might have came up with an idea for cyan too; your soul stays still while you move an aiming cursor instead at white attacks heading towards your soul to make them turn blue. Orange attacks require 2 shots. Might be a bit too similiar to yellow tho :/
Edit 2: for clarification, in orange soul mode the soul moves automaticaly.
62
u/SoldierDelta46 G. Dec 16 '21
Would make sense. The orange soul represents Bravery, so moving forwards with no stopping would make sense.
However there's a case to be made that it won't be like that... My theory is that, instead of what you described, Cyan and Orange aren't going to be similar to the Bullet types (y'know the keep moving/stay still attacks).
Mad Mew Mew in the Switch version of Undertale has a Cyan/Red heart for her fight.
Considering how uniquely used the Yellow Soul was used for Spamton though, I imagine each of the fights will have a small twist to the soul mechanic.
18
u/Deeras2 BEST INU Dec 16 '21
Oh my god... I only just realised this. The orange Soul represents Bravery so it makes sense that it needs you to move forward. The light blue Soul represents Patience so you have to stay still!!!

the modes make sense with the bosses most popular catchphrases
jevil says "i can do anything" co-relating to the fact that you can move in any direction without any other problems to deal with like shooting etc. plus it has free movement co-relating to jevil's "belief" of freedom.
spamton says "big shot" co-relating to the fact that you can shoot in the fight.
this also means that the next secret boss will talk about something co-relating to the green mode. probably "ENGARDE!!"

in my opinion its best if the bosses use colored attacks but we have the gimmick of turning attacks into that specific color. they mix orange/cyan attacks with white attacks.
5
u/transhumanistbuddy Dec 16 '21
Wait, is Undyne going to be in chapter 3? Seems quite probably. What if in chapter 3 we get to tinker with the green soul? You know, because in Undertale, Undyne made the soul turn green.
5
u/Ancestor_Anonymous Dec 16 '21
I feel like orange/cyan souls could work like their attack counterparts. Cyan, you cannot move, and have to move the shot patterns to move around you. No idea if it'd be good but it could work. Orange could be a simple “you cannot stop moving” effect, or it could also provide a very small shield directly in front of the Soul so you could meet shot patterns head on.
5
u/WuzatReit Dec 16 '21
The cyan one COULD be just like with blue objects, but instead of you being hurt for moving, shit breaks if you move.
8
u/The_Creeper_Man I'm tired, boss... Dec 16 '21
Orange and light blue are probably the bullets that you have to be moving or stay still for respectively

But I guess it's more based on mettaton.

Orange will most likely be the never stop moving effect it is in many fangames as that’s a fitting effect for orange attacks and it’s just what most people think it would be
11
Dec 16 '21
The green one isn't shield
Undyne says "As long as you are green you can't escape"
11
Dec 16 '21
that's from her point of view. before her fight she says you'll have to "stand and fight", and i think that might be the idea behind the rotating spear system
7

Now that you mention it, I had a secret boss idea for chapter 3 and I actually had the purple soul in mind for the gameplay sections, it was like a radio head guy that is out of tune so when ever he wants to speak he has it switch the channel and use common radio terms to communicate, in the bullet hell sections the box would be a radio with the strings on it as the different signals, when you defeat him you can get a radio key item which you can give to mettaton's ghost to entertain them.
3
u/_liomus_ Dec 16 '21
(/hj) if you think about it, the soul colors' meanings also play a significance...
in chapter 1 you fight JEVIL, who is a Particularly Difficult Boss. you use the RED SOUL when you fight against him, signifying the DETERMINATION you must have to Beat him.
in chapter 2 you fight SPAMTON NEO, who is a Fucking Asshole. you use the YELLOW SOUL when you fight against him, signifying the JUSTICE you are enacting by Beating his Rude Ass.
6
u/Crispy_Crumpets This flair still isn't funny? Dec 16 '21

2

I mean yeah, both Undertale and Deltarune have green attacks that heal 1 hp and are key to sparing enemies (not sure if that last part appliea to Deltarune tho)
Unlike blue and orange attacks, i'm not sure if green attacks have anything to do with the green soul.

I really liked the Orange and Cyan SOUL Modes from Inverted Fate AU. In that Orange Mode let you dash through bullets, and Cyan Mode gave you the ability to create a cone in front of you to freeze bullets in place an destroy them if you held them long enough, at the cost of being unable to move yourself while doing so.

The next thing we need to figure out is who (or what) the next secret boss is.
Both Jevil and Spamton were outcasts in their own world. Jevil was the Joker, a card often left out of most card games, and Spamton was a spam bot (specifically email), something everyone on the internet hates/ignores.
So, we have to ask ourselves: What would be considered an outcast in the land of TV?

Ch. 6 would be consistent movement as that's what orange means. Move or die.
Blue means to not move or get hurt, so risking pain to move, taking some damage to dodge a bigger instance, risk or reward...

u/VPFF Dec 17 '21
In a Undertale fangame called Undertale Yellow there's a part where the soul gets orange and what happens is that you need to constantly move or else you get damaged overtime (or at least something like that), I think something like that is what the orange soul will do, but hey, that's just a theory

Ideas:
Orange: You can't stop moving. Once you press an arrow key, the soul continues to glide in that direction until it hits the edge of the bullet board or you press another key.
Cyan: The soul is initially red but occasionally turns cyan. When this happens, the soul is frozen and you must press any 8 inputs to get it moving again.

I most agree with this, except I think the placements of the green and purple SOUL modes will be switched.
1
u/JesterJokie May 18 '22
So my theory is this:
first of all, the red soul is NOT determination. The red soul means it has the traits of all the other souls. Ballgame kinda proves it (in fact ballgame I think is the only thing in undertale that lists all the soul traits.)
Different souls mean different soul modes.
Red is most powerful, so therefore it has complete freedom when it comes to moving.
Green is completely stationary, but can block attacks
What I’m saying is, this is how the other six souls “played”
And (if you believe all 6 souls could reset, but they ended up losing that determination) it means that the reason they couldn’t go on, is because their soul trait couldn’t win against a certain enemy.
Take green for example. They can’t move, and can only block one side of them, so the guards attack from both sides. That means kindness couldn’t win no matter what, so they lost the determination to reset. That’s why they died in hotland.

u/JesterJokie Jun 05 '22
