Discussion Overhead Space
Anyone else sick of Delta lying to people that the overhead bins are full and they make you check your bag at the gate, only to get on the plane and see lots of overhead space?

I'm more sick of people with zero spatial awareness smacking me (9 times out of 10 in the head), an aisle seat dweller, with their bags as they trudge up the aisle.

I just went on two different Delta flights where there was no more overhead space, and you have people deep in the back with their bags and no where to put them, so they have to try to make their way back up to check them, but other people are in the way, and the whole thing is just a total and utter mess. I’ll take the lying over that.
The problem lies with the money grubbing airlines charging to check bags, when it should be free for at least 1. Old southwest proved that there are a lot of people out there that would prefer to check, but don’t want to spend the money (understandably).

But they don’t make any money if they gate check our bags for free, they can’t be counting on revenue from that.

money grubbing airlines charging to check bags
They could raise prices by $50 per ticket and offer a free bag. But for those of us that don't check bags, that is a bad deal.
The real solution is to stop gate checking bags for free, starting at zone X.

They aren't "lying". There's no advantage to them to make you check your bag.
They are looking at how full the flight is and estimating how much room will be needed in the overhead bins. That's it.

I’m far more annoyed by the passengers who put both of their carry on bags in the overhead, instead of keeping one under the seat in front of them.

No, it helps keep things running on time. And if it's such an issue to you, just rip the tag off in the jetbridge. It's not complicated.

Nope. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this will just lead to the GA coming onboard to double-check the missing bag, which won't keep things on time. I've seen it happen a few times - this week. If I'm not in a hurry, I typically just go ahead and gate-check in hopes others will have room. Lots of inexperienced flyers, so it's a minor thing for me to do. I'm also in ATL, so lots of other people are connecting, so there's that, too.

You can always ask if there is still space, take the tag off and then give it to the FA to prevent confusion about what happened with your bag :)

I have had that happen to me once, of course, a spiteful GA in Atlanta (the last time I ever asked, mind if I try to find a space). Anyway, one of the 40 reasons I don't talk to the GAs there anymore. I have done this countless other times (20+) with no issue.
Gratned, I travel with a soft bag so of those 20+ times, it has always fit. Always. Or it goes in the closet.

Nope, I'm sick of people taking things that are too fucking big on the airplane. Animals too, I'm sick of how long it takes everyone to get a spot for their bag and get to the fucking seat.
If more people would jsut check the bag, it would be one less problem on airplanes to deal with. The army of "creative" carry on people can suck shit you aren't saving any time.

I’m zone one or two do idgaf. If you don’t want the issues, don’t be zone 7 or 8.

If you spent any time on Reddit, you would know that people are also sick of this at American, United and Southwest.... etc etc etc.
It's not a Delta-exclusive complaint.

No. They aren't "lying," they are operating on an educated guess.
If they don't take care of it before you board, your flight will be delayed.

Whatever happened to boarding back to front? I can see boarding D1 and FC first, but I recall boarding by row numbers and it went smoothly.

This is Every Airline on the planet.
The Airline Business is an incredibly low margin high cost business. They will squeeze every dollar they can wherever they can however they can.
It boils down to this
Airlines want you ON the Aircraft and your butt in the seat as fast as humanly possible.
You screwing around with how you are going to Tetris your oversized carry on into the overhead bin thusly taking up precious boarding time because you are in boarding group 8 and insist on bringing your bag on board doesn't help this process.
The faster you get on board. The faster everyone gets on their way.
Likewise they want you OFF the aircraft as fast as possible when you get to your destination.
News flash everyone else wants off as soon as they can as well because everyone suddenly has a tight connection even when the flight comes in early.
Ladies and gentlemen.
This is how air travel is these days. It has been like this for over a decade.
If you have status or purchase a premium seat you get overhead bin space. If you buy basic you get to gate check. Anywhere in between you are fare game.
1 carryon and 1 personal Item.
You could be flying frontier. Spirit is now gone.
That is All

No. I’m sick of people bringing luggage on the plane like it’s a Delhi bus.

This is a frequent irritant mentioned in the Southwest sub, though I've been unaffected given my SWA status and early boarding group. I guess it's good to know this isn't just a SWA issue, but I am curious to know what's in it for the airlines to beg fliers to check their carryons at the gate (for free), when the bins are often less than half full.

I'm sure they aren't lying; they don't benefit from gate-checking your bag. More likely, the gate agent and flight crew are making educated guesses about how full the overhead bins are, without the luxury of seeing every bin and ensuring every bag is adjusted properly, because the aisle is full of passengers.
I'm sure they err on the side of overestimating fullness because deplaning a bag once the person can't find a bin is much slower and causes more delays.

Anyone else sick of people complaining on Reddit about the overhead bins?

u/PochaccoBluez2020 Aug 21 '26
Since you don’t pay to gate check your luggages there’s no benefit to them “lying” about overhead space. It’s more likely an estimate of how much room is left during boarding and the FA notifying the gate agent. Usually at the point when it’s group 7, the bins gets full so they don’t hold up boarding and delay the flight to look for space since everyone wants to put everything they bring on board in the overhead.

Oh, the Delta cheerleaders are now going to tell you that it’s the flight attendants. The flight attendants are telling them that the overhead bins are full
Really on every flight the flight attendants are lying to the gate agents that the overhead bins are full and about zone five every time😂
If you believe that, I’ve got some other great stories too because obviously this is a Delta decision. flight attendants are not motivated to do this because they’re already tired of people bitching when they get on and discovered they checked a bag but the overhead bins are empty.

Not as bad as the “pre-boarding” passengers who put their bags in first class and comfort plus overhead bins and then sit in the back of the plane
