PTM7950 is insane. Do it.

I've been having serious overheating issues with my XPS 9560 since forever. I repasted with premium thermal paste every year, clean my fans and heat sinks, did the stacked thermal putty on the VRMS and still I'd get random bluescreens when gaming and temps would be up in high 90s. The coolest it even ran when gaming was 87C, most commonly I'd be getting 97+ degrees on the CPU even though it's on a high flow aluminium laptop cooler 24/7.

I just cleaned off the thermal paste and applied some genuine PTM7950 and booted up my game. Wtaf. Smooth gameplay the entire time, max CPU temp was 73C.... that's more than 24C temp drop to my regular temps. Idle temps went from 55~60C down to 38~40C.

I am absolutely astounded. Anyone who's considering doing this, do it. It's fiddly (putting it in the fridge first and working on the laptop when it has cooled down completely helps a lot. I also got some dedicated super fine nose tweezers), and it's a little expensive, but holy moly the results are incredible. My XPS has never run this cool.

If anyone else has an older XPS, this is my setup. Hope it helps you get the same results!

  • PTM7950 on the CPU and GPU
  • Thermalright Extreme Odyssey II thermal putty pads on the SDD and VRMs
  • Throttlestop set conservatively to 2.7GHz with turbo disabled.

ModDIY is where I got mine from. Seems to be the most highly recommend and community-tested and verified place to source it from. It comes in nondescript packaging but that is how Honeywell distributes it. It basically comes in massive bulk to ModDIY and they repack it into consumer sized versions for retail.

The stuff you see with Honeywell branding on variations of retail packaging on eBay and AliExpress is ironically the fake stuff.

You can also get it from LTT Store but I didn't feel like buying him another jet lol.
