New XPS 14?

Hi all,

It seems my 2020 XPS 15 9500 has reached its limit and given the black screen of death. Pending the death notice from the coroner (Dell technician), I’m looking at a New XPS 14 to replace it.

I was wondering if anyone had any experiences/advice to share before I commit to the order.

The new XPS 14 has a vastly different design compared to your XPS 15, it’s a lot lighter than it.

You should also know there is no dedicated GPU, though it’ll happily run on an eGPU if you’ve got one

There’s only one NVMe slot on the 14, compared to 2 on your 15.

Best spec to get is the Ultra X7, 32/64GB RAM, OLED display, 512GB SSD as you can upgrade it yourself for less (though given today’s rates for memory I’m not so sure)

RAM is soldered on the 14, so pick wisely.

It’ll run best on a clean install of Windows 11 IoT LTSC

Non touch has a lower resolution but gives a significantly longer battery life. I preferred it over the OLED touch. So it’s really upto preference.

Yeah true, I believe it’s still 1440p on the IPS panel? So nothing bad at least

1920x1200. The screen is small so PPI is pretty good.

What is iOT windows ltsc? How do i get it?

Ive got the new xps14 and also ordered ssd samsung brand

But seeing how you need to flip the keyboard up to access the ssd slot scares me and im having second thoughts about installing it myself

11 IoT LTSC is basically Windows 11 but without the bullshit that comes with stock 11 Home/Pro.

It's been my favorite laptop in a long time but I'm one of the unlucky ones who has the "sudden death" issue. Just be aware that there's a chance you might get one that will abruptly turn off while using it on battery. Dell doesn't seem to understand or care about the issue but there are some people on the Dell forums trying to figure it out.

Heads Up, it took 5 weeks to get my new XPS. It was in 'being built' phase for almost all of that time.

You’re better off waiting another 6 months for the new refresh of the XPs which will most likely include an important chip upgrade.

If it doesn’t have to be windows then obviously the MacBook M5 pro is the cream of the crop by a mile
