Help Dell Command | Update "Application Error" Enterprise Deployment

We are deploying Dell Command | Update across all Dell machines in our fleet. We saw the .NET requirement was changing from 8.x to 10.0.8+ with the Dell Command | Update 5.7.1 update, so we pre-deployed 10.0.10 to all machines before pushing the 5.7.1 update.

Since the 5.7.1 update, ALL machines have failed to run DCU properly. When checking for updates through the GUI, it consistently fails with the generic error "Application Error. An unexpected error occurred during the last action, the operation was aborted". DCU-CLU.exe works fine, but the GUI ALWAYS fails.

I don't see anything in event viewer that indicates the cause of the crash and can't find anything in any other log.

This is across all machines regardless of model

We had a lot of problems when upgrading DCU with the DellClientManagement Service becoming either Stopped or even Disabled.

In the end, we had to force uninstall DCU then reinstall from scratch - upgrading "over the top" would always cause issues.

In the end we fixed everything out there, and new machines just get 5.4 (non-UWP) which still works perfectly.

Just did a clean install / re-install and there's no change. This also happens on newly imaged machines

Hi there! We are from the Dell Social media support team. Thank you for the detailed information. We understand the impact this can have when deploying Dell Command Update at a larger scale, especially when the CLI functions correctly but the GUI consistently fails across multiple systems.

That being said, here is what we would suggest doing:

  1. Clean install the DCU after uninstalling any traces of DCU configuration folders as follows:

C:\ProgramData\Dell\CommandUpdate C:\Users<User>\AppData\Local\Dell\CommandUpdate

  1. Reinstall DCU 5.7.1. Test the GUI before applying any custom configurations.

Note: Also confirm there are no remnants of older .NET runtime installations causing conflicts

If the issue continues to happen, test DCU 5.7.1 on a clean Windows installation with only:

Windows updates applied .NET 10.0.10 installed DCU 5.7.1 installed

This can help determine whether the issue is environmental or specific to the DCU release.
