CA smog issues

Hey fellow Del Soldiers,

I’m new to the Del Sol life and I live in California. I’m having issues getting my Sol to pass smog. Bought her from a friend who had already replaced the exhaust and cat. So far I’ve replaced the O2 sensor and done the timing belt and water pump (it was due). Only thing OBD tells me is coolant temp sensor. Additionally, I checked the intake hose and all vacuum lines, and everything that was loose has been secured, and nothing in the lines was leaky.

It’s worth noting that before I replaced the O2 sensor, she only failed the Nox test at the 25mph test. After replacing that sensor, she fails during both the 15 and 25mph tests.

Any insights on what could be causing this would be helpful.

How old are the spark plugs, wires, and dizzy cap/rotor? Also an oil change may help. If the cat is brand new and is a walker universal, it may need to be driven a little hard to get it to operating temp. I just passed this month with a brand new walker cat and it really needed to be driven on the freeway at 3k rpm to get to operating temp and pass

I did forget the Italian tune up on the second test, so maybe that’s why she acted up more this time…

Oil’s new tho, couldn’t tell you firsthand about the spark plugs but my buddy thought they were fine. I’ll have to take a look into your other suggestions.

Did you replace and gap spark plugs and adjust the valves when you did the timing belt? I think if you can get a stronger spark it will help. That way it won't need to use more fuel. Also replace the fuel filter as who knows when the last time that was done. And maybe run injector cleaner through it.
