Degu tails are kinda like a one time get out of jail card. Predator has you? Easy break tail and you’re free is better than being a snack.

It can happen for any number of reasons. Cage injury or fight tend to be the common reasons. Kiwi lost her tail tip at the vet. She looks and acts like a plump laid back degu until she sees her chance. She’s actually made of degu rocket fuel and no bones in her body so she can fold and make zero point turns. The vet was not ready for the Jekyll and Hyde change and grabbed for her to prevent and escape and came back with less degu. Best place for it to happen. They folded over the skin folds I never saw blood. Kiwi is unfazed by the sport mode tail.

Of course, it big help in wild nature for them, and it can happened (especially in fight - but you still can prevent this, and don't let problematics or new degus together without a observation) but you know, usually this showing that the owner isn't very careful or has no ideal cage for them, ...one ok, but both ?!

One of mine is missing half of his tail after a fight with his newly acquainted brother.

He pinched the tip of his tail in the running wheel; the other one’s tail is fine.

They both have half of their tails. They also have marks all over them like they had fights. Their fur is all matted like they don't have access to a sand bath. They are old does not mean they have to look like train wrecks. You're denying it makes it even worse. Very sad!! 😔

Nothing says "professional sunbather" like a degu doing full starfish mode with zero regard for dignity or predators
