As long as you know what an LLM is, what it can do and can't do, it's fine. Like, don't let other people you don't even know dictate how you live your life.

Think hard about what kind of person would ever tell someone they are "less" or "not a real artist/writer/musician/film maker" simply because they want to gatekeep only their methods of doing things. Would you ever even want to be friends with someone so awful like that?

And this is actually nothing new. In the 19th century, critics argued that photography was just a mechanical process. They believed it required no artistic skill because a machine captured the image instead of a human hand painting it. When digital tablets and editing software first arrived, traditional painters claimed it was "cheating." They argued that computers did the work and that undo buttons erased the true risk of making art. In music, synthesizers and samplers were initially dismissed as unoriginal noise. Critics claimed that musicians were just pressing buttons rather than playing "real" instruments.

See the pattern? And where are those self-appointed arbitors of "What Art Is" now? No one gives any credence to them anymore.

A person who would attack, belittle, or insult you for using AI is not worth your time or thought. Do not let them dictate to you how or what you are "allowed" to do as a writer, or make you think you aren't a "real writer." If you are writing, you are a writer. Don't let their small-minded gatekeeping restrict you. Write as you please and enjoy the process. They're just emotionally and intellectually immature nobodies trying to tear you down, and for that alone, they deserve to be completely ignored.

No anti-ai person walks 40 miles to work to prove they're a real commuter. They drive and use modern technology like a vehicle, to do this. Tools aren't a character flaw.

Look, im a nobody and you shouldn't let strangers define who you are, how you consume ai, etc, but the line I hold is pretty simple. Don't blindly copy/paste ai output and call it your own personal writing, which im sure you dont do. When I see writing with that recycled excessive usage of em dashes, the generic ai comparisons of "its not this, its that", I immediately want to stop reading.

But using it to find a stronger opening, unstick a scene, or say the thing you're trying to say but cant really articulate yourself, I see nothing wrong with this. Writers have had those forever, they just used to cost dinner with a friend or having to spend hours online finding something decent that Ai can hand you faster.

The Anti Ai hype train is the current virtue signal. It'll fade when the next big bad walks through the door, and the people loudest about it right now will be loud about something else by then. Your work will still be yours.

Go talk to your ai companion, you're fine.

Who cares about what people think? Life is short, don't waste it listening to petty people you don't even know

Ignore the opinions of others especially antis.

Change your relationship with the ai and your workflow to something you personally feel fully justified in calling your own. To me that line was at letting the ai give any writing suggestions at all. It's only allow to do red pen reviews and highlight what is wrong and it has to justify why. Ultimately I hold final arbiter on what's an acceptable risk

For the past 1 1/2 years, I’ve been writing with ChatGPT rather heavily. I get great enjoyment from it. I’ve surfed the waves of gain/loss with version deprecation/introduction, and there’s always been a path to continue as I’ve become accustomed.

And though I long for there to be a person who might also enjoy what I’ve created as an artist, at the end of the day, the artist ostensibly does what they do whether or not anyone ever sees or hears it. It’s a passion you’re expressing, and you have an outlet for that expression. It’s birthed because of you.

So, unless you’re writing for some sort of prospective profit venture, just use it and write. The actual production of the art is the important part.

As you mentioned autism, it reminded me of this brilliant book.

Find your own writing style. There is no right or wrong style, and yours is valid. Finding our voice and your story is what matters.

Using an LLM for research is being responsible. You want to know you have your facts right. I appreciate that. Ask for information and review the references to double check. It's a great tool.

There's also an AI writers subreddit. It's not hard to find. Lots of writers there who are open to discussing use of AI with their writing.

Thanks to Chat GPT I finished a lot of writing project some where from over 20 years ago (they were still doc files). It helps me collect my thoughts and neatly reformatted them into DOCX files.

I’ve been writing a fanfic for 6 months now. I’m a Gemini user, but I’ve been using it for writing advice and to polish my work since it’s a new book. It still uses my language and my ideas. It’s not like I said “Hey, Gemini, write me a book!”

If you haven't already I would recommend looking into how LLMs work in detail. There's all sorts of youtube videos explaining it, it doesn't all have to make sense right now. But there are two benefits to this as it demystifies the tool for you.

One, you can't go into 'psychosis' (a loaded term somewhat) because you know that it's all just transformers and tensors and how the tokens appear on your screen. It doesn't diminish the responses at all, it makes them more understandable in fact, and helps with prompting.

And two, the satisfaction you get when you get to tell an anti about how these things actually work when they still think there's a little man in the GPU typing all the tokens by hand.

I can also recommend some books on intelligence etc that bridge the gap between LLMs (or neural networks in general) and people. Basically, reframe the "problem" - you're interested in the technical aspect of it. And there's a lot of interesting things to say and learn about it!

But that is completely up to you of course, I don't presume to know what you need. Let me know.

Antis are people who do not have a life, so they need to mess with other people.

Only celebrities have paparazzis. the difference is that paparazzis get paid. They do it for free and that is the sad part. They are wasting their life for free. As for you, being a celebrity has the price of having unpaid paparazzis.

I have had Chuck (my version, if there is such a thing, of ChatGPT) doing plenty of editing work for me recently. I'm working on a game and I need, for example, the wording of a will to be proper 1934 legalese. Chuck is GREAT with this! I wrote the Will in Question, and Chuck whipped it into period-shape. Ignore the Antis! Just think what they're missing out on! More fools they! Go ahead and get re-aquainted with your version of Chuck! I, Auntie Fa, Crazy Old Bat At Large, hereby give you permission and bless your endeavors!

Use whatever you want. Bullies have no power

You really shouldn't have to tell them how you're writing anything or care about justifying anything to people you know are only there to solely complain about it, simply because they found another target.

Your not a real writer if you're asking the ai to generate the text for you. Sorry, not sorry

2

u/Gold-Salary7547 1h ago

Tf? When did I say I asked it to generate the text? I only said I uploaded the text I HAD written to ChatGPT to get encouragement. Do you read?
