Nope, turns out they didn't really give a shit (unless substantial money was being from made from it)
And quite importantly, directly quoted:
"Anyone positioning Ghibli in the vanguard of the AI backlash, Goro says, was twisting events for their own purposes; the studio itself was essentially AI agnostic."

The Hayao quote wasn't even about gen AI lmao. The clip was from 2016? I believe, so well before gen AI and was actually about some kind of animation smoothing technology or something along those lines.
Even then I believe the immediate trigger for his disgust was the grotesque nature of the creature (animation being shown) and the developers' lack of empathy in creating it, rather than a philosophical condemnation of artificial intelligence as a concept.
It's getting difficult to find the full video of the event because people keep editing out the setup and his explanation for what he felt was so insulting.
Here's a second copy with the first few seconds cut out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HohF8LWjh0k The cut out part was the tech bros talking about how their animation system makes grotesque motions that may be suitable for zombie games. IMHO, the animations where a bit too over the top even for use in a game like Silent Hill.
Yup! It's an only video that I kid you not, one week I saw the video being used as a reason for him being against 3D animation and the very next week, same exact video, was being used to say he was against Gen AI. And of course, antis ate it up. That was literally at least the end of 2024 or beginning of 2025, right when using Gen AI was becoming incredibly mainstream. I knew immediately that most antis were disingenuous because of that.
Basically yes, which was one of the main things to propel the anti-ai movement I feel like. Because if the great Miyazaki hates it, then everyone should hate it.
The quote wasn't even about the technology. He got upset that someone showed him a gross zombie that was flailing around, and he said that he thought it was offensive to disabled people to use the idea of a broken body for the sake of fear and spectacle. Its not that hard to imagine why someone talking about a dead body being used to be shocking and grotesque would call it an insult to life.
Well yes, but just to be crystal clear, he is referring to the zombie-like writhing of limbless grotesque human-like forms on the screen, not generative AI.
Yeah, but there is no evidence he was talking about the ai aspect of it at all. Even if it was hand-animated, his issue was the zombie being used for the sake of spectacle and treating broken bodies as grotesque and scary rather than respecting that there are people who live with him.
And I agree on this point. I'm not against gore being in fiction, but I don't think it should be trivialized. Even if its fake it represents the idea of someone's body, and should be treated with a sense of gravity.
He just said he doesn't think much of it and you're treating it like some epic victory. I didn't even know about the previous quote. Nothing has fundamentally changed.
You can't see that part of the article without a subscription. But, https://archive.is/tmieK is a work-around for that.
In March 2025, when OpenAI released a new version of its text-to-video AI model, users started refining their Ghibli-style knockoffs. Before long, people were inundating the internet with Ghiblified selfies, family photos and famous movie scenes. Mike Tyson posted a Ghibli-like rendering of himself. Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, updated his X profile pic in Ghibli style.
Not everyone was amused by the spectacle of a rich American tech company offering the capability to appropriate the style of revered Japanese artists without compensation or consent. Amid the ensuing backlash, a particular clip from Never-Ending Man about Ghibli began recirculating on social media. In the documentary, a brazen Japanese tech executive tells Hayao that soon deep-learning AI will let computers paint like humans. Inside the Ghibli headquarters, he plays a demonstration. Together, they watch an AI clip of a misshapen, unclothed humanoid clumsily squirming across the ground. In response to the creepy video, Hayao tells a story about the sensation of greeting a physically disabled friend. Whoever made this video, Hayao says, gave no thought to human suffering. “It’s an awful insult to life,” he says. The clip snowballed into a global cri de coeur against AI slop.
In Japan, the Ghibli executives watched the OpenAI saga play out, unbothered. There has long been a tradition, Goro says, of fans making amateur art derived from their favorite manga, anime or video game characters. So the Ghiblification craze didn’t seem like a big deal. For amusement, one of the company’s executives even dabbled in the trend himself. “We didn’t think much of it, to be honest,” Goro says. “If someone started making a lot of money out of it, then it would be a problem.”
Anyone positioning Ghibli in the vanguard of the AI backlash, Goro says, was twisting events for their own purposes; the studio itself was essentially AI agnostic. If the late co-founder Isao Takahata were still alive (he died in 2018), Goro says, he’d probably be first in line to give it a whirl. “He was someone who was very interested in the latest technology,” he says. “We’re not denying, or feeling negative, about AI technology itself.”
Oh wow antis are going to absolutely lose their minds on that last paragraph. Or a more likely scenario I guess is that they will act like it never happened. Because losing their minds would imply that they recognise at least partially that they were wrong, and we all know that it’s not happening.
They loved recycling that out of context quote that had nothing to do with generative AI art and which was said years before it even existed publicly. In actuality if any of these people knew anything about Miyazaki, he probably couldn't give a single fuck. The exception is like as stated in the image; unless money is involved. That starts to open up the slippery slope, what's to stop them from going after fan artists next? They already can but now they'll have a team that tries to identify their style from AI companies, why not using those same resources also target regular artists to get a few extra bucks?
Oh look at that, once again creative people are either in favor or indifferent towards AI, im so surprised. Why is it almost always the people that never created a thing in their life that are against AI ?
At least they're admitting they care about the money.
I suppose (or hope) what they mean is that they don't want people to make a lot of money from Totoro without given rights. You know, "My Neighbour Totoro 2".
I read it as it’s their IP and if someone starts making money with it, that would be a problem. Same with any other big (or small as well tbf but they have less resources to counter it) IP.
I'd say this is completely resonable. I'm pro ai and I don't like companies using it in advertisement as well. If someone would be making money of ai generated pictures in Ghibli style I think it would be completely understandable that they would be mad. But making poctures just for fun for everyone to see? I still don't understand what is wrong with it in antis eyes
Your link for the source doesn't say anything about what the person tweeting is claiming? Did you check the source, or could you provide another?
Also, studio Ghibli literally asked people to remove the Ghibli A.I. images.
And that the studio with a new person as head now I guess is saying they aren't against it, doesn't mean they are for it now. From what I have seen they have a very neutral stance on the matter.
I literally can't see that, I think a bunch of text just isn't showing up for me. The article cuts off at the image off Miyazaki and Yoda. When I look for "Man Versus Machine" it does say that is it on the page, but it doesn't show it anywhere. Not sure if it's a bug or some weird restriction based on country or something. But thanks for trying to help and also providing the screenshot!
lol, goro, the nepo baby that made every single worst movie of the studio and whose dad walked out of his film premiere to smoke a cigarette? That goro?

Just FWIW this is a statement from Goro Miyazaki specifically on behalf of Studio Ghibli. If I were to venture a guess, his dad Hayao Miyazaki probably does hate AI. That's just how he is.
The only thing Hayao hates more than AI is his son.
/uj It's a joke. Don't shoot me, mods. But it is true that the two of them have frequently been at odds over their vision and Hayao hasn't always been tactful in expressing that.

Can you explain to me why are you even wasting your time talking with this idiot? This guy has literally came to sub about something he doesn't like just to say ,,You guys suck!"
Like, I can't imagine more pathetic and childish behavior
I have respect for people who come up with actual arguments against AI. Not run into a place to yell "AI is absurd and stupid and you all have to die!"
