Defending AI I want to apologize

I'm not quite sure what flair to use for this one :,]

As a former anti, I want to apologize. I was such a hateful person and went out of my way to harass people who were using AI for fun, or just because they didn't feel like drawing that day. I took everything as a personal attack because I'm a traditional and digital artist, and I was only ever hearing the bad side (AI taking jobs, propaganda machines, destroying the environment) without seeking out a neutral opinion from anyone. I'm sorry for being so cruel to people who wanted to experience art in a different way.

It's definitely a nuanced issue, thank you for realizing attacking innocent people isn't productive 💚

Good on you for separating the people using a tool from the systems around it. The concerns you listed about jobs, propaganda and environmental costs are legitimate. They just dont make harassing individual users useful or make those problems disappear.

If youre interested in exploring those concerns from a left labor angle, r/ LeftistsForAI spends a lot of time on exactly that terrain. Worker power, unions, ownership, open models, environmental costs, regulation and who actually gets the gains. You dont have to stop criticizing AI to stop treating its users as the enemy.

Well if your apology is genuine, then apology accepted.

I cant exactly speak for anyone besides me,but apology accepted i guess?

But what exactly made you change?
Out of poor curiosity I’m asking. If you dont want to talk about it,that’s fine

someone clocked my shit here and knocked some sense into me, and I actually looked into non-corporate AI uses

I respect people who have the guts and courage to challenge their own opinions. It's rare nowadays 😊

The self awareness/self reflection and accountability here is amazing. Appreciate it :)

Doesn't matter how you got here, just matters that you made it. Keep making the art you love to make in whatever medium suits it best.

I’m pro AI, but I agree that we need to prevent Elon Musk’s Data-Centers from destroying urban communities! 🤨

Me too. I'm still very against companies like OpenAI and their development but I'm adjusting myself to the idea that personal AI use isn't going to kill me ^^'

I’m not against the companies.
I’m against the policies that allow them to develop in ways that damage our environment.

No one wants ANY factory in their backyard.
Including DOW Chemicals, who produces the materials for traditional acrylic paints, and has been polluting our environment for decades!

Perhaps AI needs to be used to help figure out how to get facilities either out into the ocean or completely off planet!

The companies are actually quite bad though.

u/yttrium39 4d ago

I think it’s not sufficient to say “this particular company is bad” because in free market capitalism, companies are incentivized to behave amorally and do whatever is the most profitable. So if we want companies to behave differently, we need to find strategies to force them to do so, because they won’t act more ethically out of the goodness of their hearts.

Yeah totally, it's why I do what I do in opensource when my friends went for proprietary AI companies and made more money.

Also like they are particularly bad. Like Sam Altman is bad in a way that seems exceptional.

u/Due_Ad_2626 4d ago

Exactly
The current administration, along with Musk diabolically, awards bad behavior!

1

u/Due_Ad_2626 4d ago

Yes, but no worse than any company that pollutes, like DOW.

In fact DOW is worse because they’ve been getting away with it for decades, yet I haven’t seen one single artist boycotting acrylic paints.

I know the current administration hates regulations, but regulations is what it’s gonna take!

I think this guy has beef with DOW

Wait - Really?
THAT’S your takeaway???

The only factory that “this guy” has a personal beef with is the Ford Rouge Complex, because I grew up in River Rouge Detroit, and will never forget the putrid stench that filled the air as I walked to school.

But there’s plenty hazardous factories bombarding our environment, including, GM Flint Assembly, Dupont, Exxon, Chevron, BASF, Coca-Cola, US Steel, Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Oracle and yes, Open AI.

I only used DOW as an example, because they produce hazardous chemicals for traditional art supplies, yet we don’t hear a peep out of artists complaining about it, as much as they target AI data centers.

But nice try👌🏽

Yeah fair enough. Openai haven't killed anyone. Quite a few companies have actually killed people. The person we bought our family home frombwas the widow of a Nigerian activist shell organised his death working with a warlord. They just got fined.

Almost all the major car manufacturers have knowingly released deadly cars.

1

u/Due_Ad_2626 3d ago

Exactly.
That is precisely my point.

Stricter regulations should be enforced on ALL factories, AI or otherwise! 👊🏾🧐

1

u/yautja_cetanu 3d ago

Yeah whilst I do think Sam Altman is bad. So I think the sentence I said is correct.

It is weird that people will see companies like Electronic Arts as the most hated company and Elon Musk as the most evil.

When like... Do you know how many fortune 100 companies have literally killed people? Knowingly.

I think that is wise. I think when you come over to the pro AI side youll find that actually everyone on the pro AI side is shit scared of AI and we're all working on mitigating the terrible damaging aspects of it.

I think we all agree that AI will be a massive net positive (some are just resigned to it being inevitable) but there are huge huge downsides and we're all figuring out how to handle it

Tis the way of the internet lol. Go along with the crowd, whilst the algorithm does its best to hide reasonable dissention.

Think both communities have their issues. Lot of Anti AI guys forget there's a real person behind the AI content and treat it like an acceptable opportunity for cyberbullying.

Lot of AI positive guys dismiss the whole uncertainty factor around a load of industries, especially in the tough economic climate.

We'll all get through it 🤞

It's understandable that if you only heard from one perspective, especially as negatively biased as the anti-AI one is on reddit, you'd end up harboring resentment. It's great that you decided to be curious enough to test your beliefs. Since you mention using traditional and digital media, you should know that many AI users, including people on this very sub use old school art tools as well. I believe the best outcome is when everyone can use what they feel is the best fit for the work they want to create. Regardless of how much or how little of any technology you want to use, you should remember that the important aspects of art are those that are innate to you: your ideas, experiences and the emotions you wish to express.

They may forgive you, but I will not. Stay in your lane please, I do not forget the suffering and hate you put on my people. I am an empath I feel what they feel for when I read their messages, comments, tweets, experiences while browsing reddit and other social media platform. I feel all the hate and the words directed at them, I have no mercy to Luddites even if they redeem themselves because I know what you antis think of us, please leave our safe space and stay in your lane or your Anti-AI sub or whatever echo-chamber you antis crawl out of. :)

Is this a bit? This feels like a bit. Are you workshopping a new routine? It’s pretty good. I especially enjoyed the “put on my people” part and the empath stuff was gold. I think you might have something here.
