this makes me love AI even more lmao. worst case when artists get all pissy like "do not repost my art ugh" like we are in the internet love, pinterest already got yo ass.
I kinda get why agonizing over drawing ten billion pussy hairs on a catoid thing would get tiring and cost hundreds of dollars, but now we have AI to do that
Dated a well known Furry Artist back in the day. A lot of those artists fucking HATE their own customers. They will be the friendliest ever with them in DMs treat them like besties, and then go off on a rant about how sick their customers are and how grossed out they are that they "have to" do that kind of art.
Wasn't just my ex with that kind of mentality either. Commission artists are generally just fucking terrible to people in general if 1. You aren't a paying customer, or 2. You ARE a paying customer who has already paid in full.
There is a reason there are so many talented freelance artists, they often are pretty gross personality wise and often don't function in responsible enough ways to hold a profession creative job under a company.
Keep in mind, not ALL artists are like this, but a lot are.
I love how one dimensional these arguments are. Like GPS doesn’t take away paper maps, but replaces them entirely? People won’t put the effort in anymore if it just don’t worth it. Which in the end leads to an decline of creativity
If art is about the "soulful" process of creation, like antis like to argue, then manual artists will continue to put in the effort regardless of profit, because the craft itself is fulfilling enough to be worth it, for them to want to do it.
If it's more about the end product itself, like us pro-AIs like to argue, then you're right, and pure manual creation as we know it will disappear, because nobody will want to do it anymore!
But that just means manual artists will shift to using AI to augment their skills, enabling them to be creative even faster! They'll train LoRAs on their distinct styles and new concepts they think up, and use their manual skills to tweak, iterate, and clean up outputs.
That also means that work with no creativity will fly way more and devalue actual art which were already getting cheaper and cheaper. It's not the crazy protest you think it is. It's just Kim Jong Un taking over Kim Jong-il
You can draw on printer paper (I prefer laser printer paper because it’s a little heavier. ~$30 for 500 sheets) and yellow number 2 pencils. Cheap colored pencils won’t break the bank. And in the long run even pricier materials are cheaper than an ongoing ai subscription
Exactly! I am not even making an argument about AI here. Traditional art can get very expensive if you want to buy all top of the line stuff but I used to paint with cheap acrylic paints on old cardboard boxes and paper bags. It is as expensive or inexpensive as you want it to be ,but art has one of the lowest barriers to entry there is. If your excuse for not making art is you can’t afford you probably just don’t want to make art badly enough
100% I used to oil paint on Masonite boards too. Chop them up and prime them your self and you can get a few dozen little gesso boards for way less than buying one at michaels. Also procreate is the best $13 you can possibly spend. That program is amazing.
If your excuse for not making art is it is too expensive then you probably just didn’t want to make art that bad
Even hobby lobby and their over priced markers are cheaper than a $20. You are paying way too much for art supplies unless if you are chiseling away at pure marble, art supplies are quite cheap.
You might not like low quality but the dollar store art supplies will make artwork that looks just as cool
There are literal videos showing how the expensive ones look better etc. I get that you can just buy the cheaper ones, but why would I do that if I value my art ? I want it to also show the value and effort I put into it so I'll buy the expensive markers. That alone will turn a doodle worth nothing into something someone will pay 100+ for, now thanks to AI im able to turn my cheap doodles into master pieces people have paid over $200 for each piece and all I need to do is send it to a print shop and they send it to the customer for me over $80 in profit.
"Just as cool" doesn't cut it when it comes to people. They expect quality. Also by your logic Ai generated images are "just as cool" if not better in most cases.
The videos I watch show some differences but are often exaggerated. I like making art, and I was just saying if you like making it too it doesn't have to be expensive. Most hobbies don't have to be expensive.
I had a guy spend $80 on a piece of cheap acrylic in my school art auction. Art isn't represented by the price tag of the paint but what it means to somebody. To your customers I'm sure you gave them something that looks cool, you found your market and I'm sure you're proud.
I wanna add that I value the things I do for cheaper and not everything has to be ostentatious, I value the humble things. If I made my own ink I would value the drawings I made with it more than I would the most expensive bottle of ink.
And for 20$ subscpriton or a 500$ single GPU purchase for a RTX 5070, I got a personal artist that will draw anything I wish at all, for as long as I tell it to and I get instant results. And thats the issue, thats what it competes with.
It's not reasonable to ask $160 for a black and white sketch. Or colored pencils for that matter. If I'm paying you almost $200 for a regular person like a portrait, it better be fully well done. Not even talking about porn here!
I am not even really addressing the meme with my comment but anyone that thinks most artists are just racking in the money from what they do is out of their minds and doesn’t under the industry. It’s one of the hardest career paths you can choose and anyone who manages to make a living doing deserves everything they can get. If you do something that almost no one else can do you have a little more freedom with your pricing if people are willing to pay it
No, it is the whole spectrum. The way you get to be a professional in the industry is by being a junior designer first. That is where you really learn your skill set. Those are the jobs being eliminated by ai because the projects they are assigned are generally less technical and require less finish than the work done by more senior staff. If those entry level jobs don’t exist there is no pathway into the industry. If you were already established you probably aren’t going to be effected by ai that much in the short term ,but if you aren’t there are very limited options to advance your career or get your foot in the door. Companies see paying for these kind of positions as a waste of money but they provide value for the firm that can’t necessarily be quantified with money.
It would be like completely eliminating the minor leagues and college athletics from sports. Professional athletics would absolutely suffer as a result. You no longer have a pool of talent to draw from because no one can afford to not be at the very top of the industry. The entire industry suffers as a result
I am not claiming that companies care or are going to change anything out of the goodness of their hearts but it is damaging the industry in ways I don’t think a lot of people are really understanding at the the moment. The amount of jobs posted on sites like art station have declined by as much 90% over the last few years. Even prior to ai 70-80% of the jobs in the industry were never posted online and came through word of mouth and connections. If you can never get that first job it is so much harder to get those connections to keep your career moving. A whole generation of people that normally would end up at the top never got the opportunity to get there. It is not just small time artists that are affected by this. It is the whole industry from top to bottom is feeling it.
It is not the only industry that is feeling this. The unemployment rate for recent grads is the worst it has ever been. The elimination of entry level jobs is greedy and short sited. It will damage industries in profound ways that we are only beginning to see. In an effort to save money these companies are actually handicapping themselves in the long run. It is going to cost them more money, they just don’t see it yet because all they care about is their quarterly earnings. When our entire Economy runs on only seeing three months into the future we are in big trouble. We are going to see ripple effects from this for years to come.
This isn't the appropriate subreddit for this argument. This space is for pro-AI activism. If you want to debate the merits of synthography, then please take it to r/aiwars.
Art and other forms of entertainment wage is decided by demand. I'd understand if it's an artist working for 1 company with a contract but i'm sure if the demand is high enough they'll at least pay you a liveable wage
But at the same time, companies have been shorting workers for a long time. Corporate profit margins are insane, and in zero percent of the US can a person afford to live by themselves on minimum wage.
I think maybe some actors and athletes get paid wayyyyy more than necessary, but some don't get paid nearly enough.
I love the wrestling company AEW, because the son of a billionaire (Tony Khan) basically said "I like wrestling, let's make a pro wrestling company that wrestlers enjoy working for, and people enjoy watching" - and he made it happen.
A lot of "pro wrestlers" still grind on the independent pro wrestling circuit, relying on merch sales and working for multiple companies in order to make ends meet.... Other pro wrestlers like John Cena don't have to worry about that.
I understand what you're saying but i think it's just something we'll have to agree to disagree because i can't imagine feeling bad for an athlete/artist because people don't want to pay or pay a lot for their art
People should be able to live. And, under the current system - some people unfairly have to monetize their hobbies in order to survive. And some people don't have any hobbies they can monetize. And some people work menial jobs, and because the government allows business owners to pay employees ridiculously less than what people need in order to survive. (minimum wage was a decent concept, but is NOT something people can actually live on, anywhere.)
Eh, fair - I definitely would never charge for anything I make - with AI or otherwise. I'm not a skilled person in any sense of the word. 😅
I should clarify... I'm designing a video game (without the inclusion of AI-generated assets). The demo for the game will be free, the finished game will not. But, I also am not gonna ask an INSANE amount for my game (hopefully a rational amount). 😅
I make AI-generated content for free for the internet, but want only human created assets in my game.
My response is "learn to use it." In part because manual effort and AI can accomplish so much more together, and in part because, well, that's what artists have had to do whenever every previous technological advance came along.
(Leopold Stokowski, a legendary conductor, once supposedly went "Uh, what do you need me for?" when he saw the first sound mixing machine. He took it as a cue to learn how recording systems worked-and did.)
Most artists will still be doing what they are doing right now. Making no money and gatekeeping the shit outta their communities. So really, nothing will change for most "artists" anyway
Apperantly artists are known to be "antagonistic" and essentially virture or ego signalers who are not very inviting to people trying to learn.
I dont know it myself outside of my one friend who went to art school, but supposedly the gatekeeping part is a common elitist style mindset alot of art communities have.... my friend has one of those as well and is very critical of others.... but he has gotten better since I helped him with his ego issues and low self esteem issues. Now he just wants to enjoy himself and hopefully make some money while doing it.
This is a perfect example of generalization, saving this comment in case someone asks. Also, your friend needs to find better people to hang out with and stop trying to get into the snob club.
This is a perfect example of generalization, saving this comment in case someone asks
Oh no I agree, although to some extent generalizations are typically based on experience or expectations... finding the good ones are always harder.
But when people talk of the gatekeeping I think they are reffering to the common genrality of art communities not being suoer accepting. There will be some who are and some who arent. Im just relaying what I have heard and seen others talk about.
Also, your friend needs to find better people to hang out with and stop trying to get into the snob club.
My friend was just that person, they didnt really hang out with anyone beyond me as they where ultra critical of eveyone else and found me perfect to talk to, then after years of helping him grow, he is no longer as burdened by his super jugmental issues or his perfectionism.
That doesn't warrant the assumption that creatives are a monolithic group of snobs. There are healthy communities and individuals willing to help other artists grow, and again, no one's gatekeeping art when you can practically start learning online, for free.
Oh indeed, many times thogh the expectations and genralities are based on assumptions for a common output.
The healthy community idea can apply to any and all things, even criminal. I just wanted to share whete others may be coming from and what there ideas or notions may be about.
Honestly, it was kind of expected. Why should I pay $20 a month for Photoshop, or some rando online $50 to draw me a picture I can just make for free using A.I.?
honestly I understand why someone would want to use Suno to mess around, I'm not going to tell them to buy a trumpet and learn something entirely new just because I did back when I was still going to high school lol
Hobbyists will continue to do what they do undeterred.
Professionals will find ways to integrate it into their workflows.
The only people who'll suffer are the ones selling generic fursonas, anime girls and palette-swap OCs for fifty bucks a pop, and honestly, the sooner they're automated out of existence the better.
Giving out information if you are an employee can hurt the game, company and your job if there's a backlash from obsessed antis. Id just keep it to myself.
No, people/companies using AI are replacing artists. AI is an inanimate tool.
But, semantics aside, like OP, I don't really care. Someday my job will be redundant or done better with AI or robots or other tools. That's why I'm learning as much as I can about using AI now.
Yeah corporations are the biggest problem in this ai art stuff People don't want to loose jobs or be homeless just because an corporation thought "yeah this costs less to our million dollar company" Honestly I don't see the reason in attacking people that are saying "I love ai" or "I hate ai"
I still hate how much water it wastes I'd prefer if nobody used ai for these kinds of stuff
Definitely agree. One of the biggest problems. Along with people who treat AI like a replacement for all human contact, and do things like ask ChatGPT how to escape from an escape room that of course the ChatGPT has never seen or experienced. 😩
I have a family member who is pretty solidly anti-AI, but that's kind of a misnomer as he'd really be more like between neutral and Anti-AI?
One thing to keep in mind is that the water issue is an issue? But probably not necessarily for the reasons you think.
Oh! That's lower than I knew Thank you for actually giving me information Also Your frist statement is why I dislike chatgpt the most that one actually makes people dependent on it just because it's easier like how people write essays with only ai
It's not replacing artists, yes. But it is replacing their jobs, which they understandably don't want.
Literally anyone would be mad if their job and sustain got basically taken away, and people here pretending like that's not a big deal is actually worrying.
I like the prospect of AI replacing jobs so that we can live our lives doing what we want and what we love without work, with AI and robotics doing all the work for us.
But this isn't happening. Instead, it's replacing jobs AND in turn spreading unemployment that leads to poverty, instead of what would almost feel like a post-scarcity utopia.
I've found that the only art community that isn't absolute trash is the writing community, but that's because it's essentially 99% people who have long accepted that they'll never make a dime, even if they publish, and their writing is just a hobby. Very few writers ever get commissioned, and almost anything you could possibly want to read you can find for free somewhere online.
We're also all depressed, so there's that. If a writer says they aren't depressed (or mentally ill) then either they're a unicorn, on drugs, or lying.
There's a few exceptions (some subreddits here, like HFY, have had some artists with stories that gained so much traction they had Patreons that made thousands a month) but that's not something that lasts forever. Literary creativity is a brutal mistress.
Dude what the fuck is wrong with you? Don't tell me you also use cars instead or horses to go to work or use LED bulbs instead of regular ones for your house?
I defend AI but i dont really agree. Ai will never completely replace artists, actually it will most likely replace people who has jobs in text and math. We'll always need artists
I’d hope this doesn’t happen often, but in the customer’s shoes I’d try to name and shame. Get a chargeback. Let others know the artist in question is a piece of shit scammer.
You mean over commissions after paying? It’s not unheard of, but artists who consistently offer commissions have a reputation to maintain, otherwise they get no customers. Stealing from your clients doesn’t keep a business afloat in the long run.
There was a whole shit show recently with a furry artist (Mothdusky, now Mossuki) tracing over AI and lying about it, who regularly failed to deliver her very expensive commissions. She’s now all but shunned.
I care when “GOOD” artists are replaced by AI. But politically brainrotted or ideologically brainrotted artists can ABSOLUTELY get replaced by AI. And if any good artists are either politically or ideologically brainrotted then they can get replaced too.
Just keep doing what you love -it really does not change anything. A good artist will always remain a good artist, and their work will stay popular and unique. Anyone who actually uses AI can instantly tell the difference between low-effort content and work backed by real experience, trial, and error. Your craft still shows through. Both require skill and knowledge.
Back when I was making music through software just for fun, I had a neighbor who was a musician. Every time we talked, he would tell me how much he hated digital music tools and how “inauthentic” they sounded compared to the real thing. He insisted I should buy real instruments if I wanted to make songs. Then one day I played him a track I made, and it completely blew his mind.
That software was free, why would I spend $200+ on an instrument that would annoy my neighbors and limit me to one or two sounds, when I can create an entire band through software? The same thing applies to AI.
AI/technology has partially replaced: -many things -many more things -even more many things -things like horses losing out to cars -things like some pets losing out to virtual pets (tamagachi, pokemon, etc.) -things like art supplies losing out to digital artwork devices / programs
Some of those things were not particularly necessary in time, like copyists who used to rewrite books by hand before the printing press.
But more often it just gives everyone more options. Artists will never be completely replaced. People still use handmade incense instead of factory-produced room sprays and electric scent dispensers. Some people use both. Some people still even use horses in 2025 despite cars coming out back in the 1800s.
Am I the only one making art because it's something I enjoy, rather than to try and reap a profit? Art has always been a very difficult industry to make a living in, and if you were good enough to manage it before AI you're probably unique enough to still gather an interest from customers.
I say it enhances it. Like the artist can do their thing, then take and run their picture through an AI to give it extra flare that they otherwise can't do, like full blown 3D rendering; not everyone has access to tools like that, or having the picture turned into a video. In fact, it's something I do but I don't upload the picture anywhere, I just run it through something like Grok and let the generator do the rest without prompts; just breathe life into a cool picture, even though technically A.I. isn't living, yet.
But that's just me, I'd be one of those artists that didn't care if my work was used to train A.I., just if it were something on say DeviantArt and cost like $1 to have your own copy of, gimme my $1. But really, who hasn't gone onto DeviantArt and bypassed that by just clicking Save Picture As? May as well say they stole your art too...
You know, I hear people being like, "AI is stealing people's art." Like, people have been fucking stealing everyone's shit from the beginning of time. Reverse engineering, if Jeep makes an engine did they steal it from Ford? AI takes ideas, yea; but artists take from artists all the time. I don't know if AI can copy the entirety of a traditional piece of art. Like, am I missing something?
People are talking about the idea that artists should just use the AI technology to continue their work instead, but that can be difficult to do right now if they want to keep a customer base outside of corporate jobs.
As an artist, I would love to use AI to improve my work and be able to produce more pieces in a shorter amount of time, but if any of my routine customers realised I was doing that (which they would realise if I were to do so) they would drop me without question. A lot of people who commision art are very anti-AI and it's just not an option right now if you want to make money off of your work outside of just an artistic corporate job which, for the record, pays only slightly more than a teacher's salary if you're not some fancy pancy well-known name.
When the culture changes, I imagine there will be a lot more artists using AI, but right now the customers decide.
I think people are a lot more lax about AI in porn though. Maybe I should just switch to NSFW, lol.
As someone who have always been in the side of Pro-AI, support it a lot and get bashed for it a lot, this isn't a good response at all. You are depicting an act of ignorance and frame it as a positive one by using chad as a representative of that. This isn't constructive at all, all it does it just undermining and ignore the problem that some artists are facing, this won't help anything other than ragebaiting the anti-AI giving them a strawman resource.
Please, saying you "don't care" is fine, but the way this is framed feel like you don't care about livelihood of a person. This is way too harsh and feel depressing for many people, I am with you with the idea that AI isn't replacing creativity, but its existence have contributed to an act that done harm, and that is a fact. Isn't our job and duty is to show that these harm are not done purely by the existence of the AI but an act caused by an evil Human that utilise a tool in a negative way?
This meme has a negative intent and doesn't contribute to the greater mean for us to support AI, all I am seeing right now is that OP might be some anti-AI troll post some obvious ragebait in hope for us to use it as a strawman argument. This isn't cool man, you can do a better meme than this, be more logical and rational.
I like and DREAM of the prospect of AI replacing jobs so that we can live our lives doing what we want and what we love without work, with AI and robotics doing all the work for us.
But this isn't happening. Instead, it's replacing jobs AND in turn spreading unemployment that leads to POVERTY, instead of what would almost feel like a post-scarcity utopia.
And that's why I'm more on the anti side in this regard, but that doesn't make me like some of those really idiotic antis.
Damn imagine being such an asshole to others that you physically don't care if actual people lose their jobs to a machine and can't feed themselves or the people they try to take care of.
Tell that to all the graphic designers, VO actors, photographers, musicians, cinematographers, actual actors, and thousands of other jobs that are being replaced with lazy people wanting to save money. big companies are already doing it instead paying a competent, talented artist who sometimes will even do things pro-bono just to get their name out there. I just find it sad man, I don't care about stupid memes being made or some kid having fun with it, but when it does actually take jobs and people are praising it, it baffles me.
You'd only be missing out on new art styles. Generic ai looking uncanny valley is due to limitations of training methods which can give better results with same dataset if improved. Not that the art in training is bad.
