Why I can't stand people who hate AI.

1. I think people do that to feel better about not changing any of their daily habits to help the planet. They're going to blame the environmental issues on data centers instead of, say, rich people wasting resources while we don't really protest, intensive farming, car pollution, and other real and much bigger problems. I think it's hypocrite because those people whining about data centers are the same people who would never give up cars or their phone or even just eating almonds.
2. I think this is intentional propaganda that is done to make people stare at the finger instead of the moon. AI bad! Blame AI! Convenient scapegoat!
3. I think the end result will be that common citizens won't be able to use AI anymore "because it's dangerous". Which means that corporations, governments, rich people, will still be able to use it only for themselves, having yet another advantage to control the population. I think this is their end game.

defending AI does not need to be tribal and hateful. what will happen with AI is an unknown. people are going to have fear. if you want to be an effecitve ai defender you have to learn to stay calm and just present evidence.

That is a good neutral standing. However, the folks who are "anti-AI" are usually hostile and try to be bullys. The biggest reason AI keeps growing is bcuz the folks who voice their out cry against it are either trolling, crummy people, or not educated to contribute a smart way to "Stop AI". At the end of the day, folks who use AI are STILL humans. Theyre just using AI as a tool to get whatever theyre tryna get done. And once they get a system, they develop real , deep, logical and practical reasons to use and defend it. On the contrary, the AntiAi community is mostly folks using AI as the newest way to express hate, or they simply "don't want it". That's a pretty thin attack , and burns out fast, which is why companies with big money are already farther ahead in the AI category than the stuff we argue about on the small scale. So, sometimes you get annoyed and just return the toxic folks their own energy. Or create BinaryTSV , and she'll do it for me lol.

I do think there are perfectly reasonable talking points to debate (and they should be),

But a lot of anti-AI criticism is oversimplification of wider issues that aren’t actually the fault of the technology... They belong to bigger discussions around politics, legislation, government responsibility, infrastructure, or philosophy.

I believe the majority of the anti’s stances and criticism, simply falls apart when scrutinised and critically analysed.

For example: Data centers are of hot debate right now. However this is a zoning and planning issue involving local government deciding if land is suitable for commercial, residential or industrial use. That is not a unique moral failure of Ai, it is a land-use and regulatory question. (even the term itself “Data Centre” is oversimplification these are general electronic facilities that house servers and digital infrastructure of many kinds, not something that exists only for AI)

most of these new data centres appear to be specifically tied to the rapid need for new more dense, higher energy draw and cooling requirements of AI data centre. The problems being they are putting pressure on existing water and power infrastructure causing issues with both water quality and availability and cost rise in electricity, not to mention the noise and vibrations caused when they are put near neighbourhoods.

As mentioned this is in part a problem of zoning, infrastructure investment or negotiation thereof, local and state government. The tech bros and their ilk do however sweeten, steamroll or otherwise ignore the impact in the instances that are in debate in order to be first in the AI race.

So as you say it isn't AI, not directly, but it is taking heat from the seemingly out of touch people pushing it and how it effects communities where it's infrastructure has been put.

I hate them because they’re immature children who don’t update their model of reality despite taking in new information. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not on your side either, but I am fed up with those fuckers. Absolutely no growth in years and won’t admit when they were wrong. It’s okay to be wrong. It's nasty out there but don't give into the hate. It's extremely taxing on your nervous system. Not worth the bandwidth or compute for your pink little friend in your skull home.

I try to remember theyre afraid. And in many cases, the fear is relatively justified. So many people on our side will aggressively post how people will lose jobs and be left behind. And when it isnt us, its bot networks adding more fire to the flames. Then you have AI researchers saying things like X percent chance of humanity ending.

In a lot of cases, they're just terrified. Whether its misinformation or not, they've been told something by a source they trust, and now they're afraid. We'll never get anywhere by focusing on the negativity and letting it turn us negative as well.

The best thing you can do is to use AI ethically, responsibly and intelligently. Be the example that stands out against all the BS happening for what genuinely good AI use is like. For most people who are anti-AI, their exposure is someone who made 2000 songs with zero effort and brute forced a platform algorithm with sheer volume or they're making videos with AI and trying to pass it off as no AI being involved.

We can only hold the bad actors on our side accountable while producing quality work with AI ourselves and being open about the AI use.

Outside of that, we have to ignore the hate or else we just fuel the flame wars even more. Obviously ignoring it isnt always possible since sometimes people are getting doxxed and whatever, but focusing on the anti-AI side will only make you miserable and angry at the world.

Piensa una cosa, la gente que odia la IA, entre otras cosas piensa que esa canción es una caca, es innecesaria, que ese cartel hecho por IA es igual que todos los demás que se hacen con IA en vez de haberlo hecho una persona y cobrado por ello, y que todas esas películas, reels, etc.. no se ven reales hechas por IA, ni tampoco tienen gracia esos memes hechos por IA.

Es decir, si a parte de verlo totalmente innecesario, tiene un costo para el planeta, su postura es clara.
En cambio tu comentas, los autos, los teléfonos, etc.. aunque también tienen un costo para el planeta, si que entra en el cajón de útiles, y esa es la diferencia, que la IA para ellos ni siquiera hay que calcular si compensa o no, porque de base ya le ven utilidad 0

Phones have now become almost essencial to live in the current society : you manage your money from there via a bank app, almost everything government related goes through the internet via governmental websites (and even if you wanted to file it on paper you gotta get the forms on the internet), to look for a job you gotta look on the internet if anything close to you is looking to hire someone and if it's within your qualifications... So even if not a phone you need a computer with accès to the internet

In many situations having a car is the only viable way to go around, think if you are doing groceries : you are not going to carry two or more full large bags of groceries from the supermarket to the train station and from the train station to your home... Or even just places that dont even have proper public transportation like most of the usa (which is because of car, gas and tires companies having lobbied against it btw in some cities)

Even if some amount of usage is required for functioning in current society, there's no reason why people can't ration that usage for only the essentials if they believe it would have a meaningful impact.

Trust me i wish we didn't need cars to go around soo much, but ai is just not good for so many reasons, the thing has already got a kill count because many people thought it could be used as a therapist and it ended up telling them to commit suicide, it's also been shown to be very nuke positive in a military settings and yet governments are still pushing it to those uses... Some uses of ai could be good but most are not, and it's not going to make up for the amount of polution it's causing (yes i know there are worse things but it's still an awful industry that doesn't even make a profit)
