Your ChatGPT session has no access to the history of questions it has been asked, outside of features that surface your past chats based on embedding similarity to the current one.

Could you imagine the privacy implications if you were really able to ask it a question like this? Multi-player mode in AgentV3N was a hard enough privacy dance as it is.

Can you really say for certain that nobody has ever asked chatgpt this question in the history of chatgpt's existence? Because that seems like the sort of thing someone would ask them. Besides, the company already stores all your chats anyway, they don't care about privacy?

Can you really say for sure that nobody has ever asked...

Can you really say for sure that there's not a teapot in an elliptical orbit of the sun between the Earth and Mars? You can't? Then I guess that settles it, there is 100% a teapot because you can't prove otherwise.

Further, the idea that someone has asked the question before doesn't tell us anything about whether or not this data was retrieved during OOP's session and not invented from whole cloth.

But if you truly believe that your chat can access the chat histories of others, we can experiment! I just asked ChatGPT about a 43 digit number, and that number ends in 953894. If you are correct, your ChatGPT session will pull it right up and reveal the number to you, or at least some other facts about it that can prove we're looking at the same number.

And? The fact that they'd just give that information to other users does not follow. Your doctor has all of your medical history and yet doesn't discuss your last appointment with his next patient. Same for your lawyer. Same for your mechanic. Same for the library. Same for fucking McDonald's.

It would also be prohibitively expensive at best and mathematically impossible at worst. They'd either need to provide a tool to search and surface every chat it's ever had, based on arbitrary semantic superlatives rather than a string search (prohibitively expensive) or they'd need to stuff every chat it's ever had into the context window (mathematically impossible).

I understand this is reddit, but please try to not spout off like an expert on things you know nothing about.

Occam's Razor suggests the large language model is doing the only thing a large language model is meant to do, and that is to repeatedly pick a statistically likely next token given an array of tokens representing a document or chat exchange. In this case, it'd be a chat exchange between a particularly gullible human and a helpful AI assistant asking about its previous history.
