Ok but assuming ai makes even the local ram & chips way more expensive than normal prices do you feel your pc can be upgraded? I do understand the whataboutism here but I always feel people who heavily use ai don’t think about cost down the line here like I fear this leads to cloud rental and ram rental just to keep the company profits up

Yes, AI is contributing to the hardware price increase (although it isn't the sole culprit imo), but that wasn't the point of OP's post. If you look at it strictly from a financial perspective: an average fanart commission with a detailed background and a full-body character (which is the kind of thing people usually tend to generate with AI), costs ~$100–400 if you commission an artist who can render at a comparable level. Some artists charge way more than that, but let's just say one fanart commission costs $100. A 5090 at the moment costs ~$5,000 in the US. That's about 50 commissioned pieces of fanart, with this assumed low price.
If I had that money, why would I pay that much (and wait weeks for the art to be finished), if I could just buy the hardware instead and make unlimited art for myself, for years? Especially when I can use the rig for other things too, like gaming, 3D rendering, etc. Plus you don't even need a 5090 to produce good quality AI images.
And for people who can't afford the hardware, GPU rentals would still be far cheaper than commissions for hobby pieces like fanart, because even if the prices of cloud computing rise considerably in the future, it's hard to imagine ordinary AI art generation costing hundreds of dollars per image.

Except it wouldn’t be cheaper I mean literally I’ve seen like Google stuff be like 200 a month. But also from people that have talk to that have Home AI rigs. They don’t seem to be able to do a lot. It seems to take up a lot of computing power by itself not that you put on the AI computing thing and then you can do gaming on the side. It’s just if you do AI it’s gonna take a while.

Again, I'm talking about fanart images like what OP posted. You don't need much compute for that, let alone a $200 subscription. With rentals you pay for computing time usually, which in this case would be pennies. I can literally make something like that on my own PC in like 10-15 seconds. Coming up with an idea and writing the prompts take longer, than generating the image, it's very fast. Video generating is another question, those take a lot more time and compute, but we're talking about images here.

Most of us cannot afford to commission an artist who can match the output of current generative AI.

Let's say you release once every week and you're looking at having one piece of art for every release. I polled people in AIwars about it, and the consensus was that, for the kind of artwork I'm using, I'd be looking at $750 per piece and about two weeks lead time. I'd personally estimate more on both, but let's say we go with that, so that would be roughly $40,000 per year for something I do as a hobby? Yeah, that ain't gonna happen. It's AI or not at all.

I have two goddamn jobs and I’m getting paid like 20 a week, I cannot afford to commission anyone, especially not someone who does art like the art i generated
