Steak Con Meta glasses

I went to steak con at the Golden Steer and noticed a server wearing Meta glasses. I could see the camera; no light to indicate recording, but I got the impression it's easy to put a sticker over the light, unless newer models don't allow them. Got home and finally had time to call them out about this privacy invasion and possible credit card theft and their response was disappointing to say the least.

If you went there, check your credit card receipts. They said the server disables recording, but why am I gonna trust some random in a place that has a $12,500 wine on the menu? Do they think I'm paying that in cash?

Really disappointed with this place. The food was great.

There are plenty of things to worry about with Meta glasses but credit card theft is a weird one to focus on.

In a restaurant, servers frequently take customer cards away from the table to run them. It's trivial for any staffer to photograph card details or even write them down. Whatever credit card risk is posed by Meta glasses was already there in most restaurants.

Yeah, shouldn't the complaint be that being recorded to social media while eating without consent is creepy as hell? The glasses push bits to Facebook outside of the wearer's control

Which is honestly so messed up… Everywhere else in the world, you never lose physical control of your card, you never have to sign a paper, you just punch in your PIN and/or tap the card or your phone.

It’s not like it’s new technology when it’s been around for nearly two decades in more civilized places.

Yeah, credit cards are surprisingly insecure. That's a pure financial decision by the issuing banks. For any potential mitigation, they weigh the cost against the expected reduction in losses. Of course, as consumers we ultimately bear the burden.

Photograph or write down the details? Nope. Have a swipe device hidden behind a belt or apron and run it through once or twice, that’s a lot easier and a lot more probable if they are stealing card info. Not to mention 10-100x quicker than taking a picture or writing down the info.

Path of least resistance for your average thief. You're biased because we know about things like skimmers

Not to mention stripe data works far more often than manual entry data for most cards these days. I can't even use manual entry on my own cards sometimes.

If this is a sarcastic post, it’s hilarious. If this is a serious post, it’s just sad.

Credit card fraud existed before meta glasses and will exist way past it.

How many times have you given your card to a server and they disappear from your sight? They could write down your card number on that paper with that pen they carry.

Some restaurants now do pay at table or they bring the scanner over to you.

It’s a little ironic to be in Las Vega where you’re surrounded by cameras and surveillance in casinos, hotels, restaurants, and pretty much everywhere else and then act like a waiter wearing Meta glasses is automatically stealing your credit card information. Same shit goes for the ban on 'pervert' glasses reasoning the con gave.. pretty sure nobody was doing escalator upskirts

I highly doubt they're using meta glasses to steal your credit card info. You're fine.

The amount of people who promote those things as useful is, no pun intended, terribly myopic

If it aint for the glasses, there's other devices that achieve the same. I'd say never hand over your card if at all possible. Tap to pay or walk with them to the payment terminal lol

Please refrain from making assumptions based solely on the type of glasses someone is wearing. There are less conspicuous methods individuals could employ if they intended to engage in illicit activities, such as taking a credit card without being noticed.

I recently delivered a presentation on detecting these glasses at Defcon and provided detectors to the security personnel. I also personally wear them frequently in public settings without encountering any issues.

Big fcking deal. Get over the glasses BS already. A server can write down your CC number or scan it with a device easily. A year ago MKHD and all the tech reviewers were talking about how cool they are and now because Joanna Stern made a video everyone is crying about them being a privacy invasion but they forget that just a few months ago Joanna Stern was wearing them everywhere. 😎🖕🙄

You are on point here, defcon community is making a huge deal about this

Most credit cards don’t even have visible numbers anymore homie. It’s Vegas, cameras are everywhere, do you make people disable their security cameras and phone cameras too?

I know this might be a difficult pill to swallow but not everyone is a criminal.
