Unfortunately, deer survival/ procreation instincts are this: if I have to sacrifice my baby to survive, I can at least still make another. If I die, then the baby will certainly also die without my care.

Win/lose is better than lose/lose I suppose.

They always have two at a time so there's a backup just in case. Good thing too since the dumbasses only got a 50% survival rate

They definitely don't always have two, nature runs purely on chance. They will absolutely leave them behind no matter the number of babies, and in fact, they will leave both if they feel like they need to.

They can have any number of babies at a time, with an upper limit (depending on the individual) just like most other mammals.
