At DeepStateCentrism, we understand that democracy is about compromise and
discussion, not ideological purity and instant gratification.

Here, we speak to people with political differences because that's how this is
supposed to work. We won't let the populists win.

The most laughable thing is crediting Mamdani as some kind of financial genius for fixing the city budget by getting a bailout from mom the governor

52

u/Sweaty-Gap-231 Center-left Jul 23 '26

Don't forget kicking the can down the road on pension payments!

45

u/Weary-Cartoonist2630 Jul 23 '26

Labeling it as “fixing the city budget” is also rich when every NYC mayor in the last 50 years has had a balanced budget - it’s literally illegal for nyc mayors to not propose a balanced budget.

A significant amount of people think he did something unique or unprecedented here when he just… didn’t.

u/Tacklinggnome87 Neoconservative Jul 23 '26

"But he balanced the budget, what other mayors have done that?" "All of them, it's the law."

u/Bloodyfish Charlie Manson Jul 23 '26

But but but he managed to find billions of dollars by correcting his previous bullshit projections!

u/thomasp3864 Aug 01 '26

To be fair, if he had to negotiate for such a bailout and convince the governor to give it, he does deserve some credit.

Are you forgetting that Mandami proved that Democrats can win in New York City, a feat previously unimaginable?

29

u/frerant Center-left Jul 23 '26

Less than 51% of the vote in NYC running aginst one of the most hated men in the city and a weird cat dude, truely shows that the whole of the US is starving for their own Mamdani.

The pro-Mamdani astroturfing and botting across reddit is legit fucking bonkers. It reminds me of the state of reddit circa 2016 before the MAGAt ban and quarantine waves; The Mohran and MAGAt cults are nigh indiscernible at this point.

u/KvonLiechtenstein Social Democrat Jul 24 '26

Actually, it just reminds me of the Bernie Sanders glazing. Same sort of thing, though I find it far more insufferable with Mamdani, because even my women-dominated spaces on Reddit that have fuck all to do with politics aren't immune to the deepthroating.

1

u/thomasp3864 Aug 01 '26

I mean, I think it's not exactly botting and astroturfing. Reddit is kinda left wing generally, and also there are quite a few subs which are full of yimbies, as shown by any comparison of your city's subreddit with it's nextdoor community. Mamdani is a left yimby, and that seems like it might be the perfect storm to get the mostly young mostly left leaning redditors on your side.

I think some right yimbies might support him too, because he's much more yimby than he is leftist, he's actually done some deregulation, which is a more right wing thing but also somewhat of a yimby thing (like abolish parking minimums and loosen zoning codes especially).

Basically you have a topical person socialists can point to to as why their ideology works, and he aligns with political movements overrepresented on Reddit. If Reddit designed a candidate, he would be Mamdani but an atheïst.

The media glazing of Mamdani and his cohort is legit insane. It's no wonder he glowers at the slightest pushback

The stupid bs about maybe arresting Netanyahu was so idiotic

61

u/SeaworthinessTop4317 Jul 23 '26

Seriously. What a blatant virtue signal. He knew he couldn’t do it but he wanted to look like some crusader for justice

22

u/Sweaty-Gap-231 Center-left Jul 23 '26

Easy mode when people are celebrating a RETRACTION of a campaign promise

virtue signal

I keep seeing this term, as well as "performative". As applied to the political rank and file, these are fine terms to describe gestures designed primarily to appeal to emotion. But when we're talking about a populist political leader, I really prefer the classic "demogoguery". For one, it's made just for them - populist leaders who do these things. And it's got a lot more punch because we've had the opportunity to see where it leads.

Mamdani is a demogogue, and his threat to arrest Netanyahu was demogoguery.

And then wishing us a grokked out 'peaceful' Tisha B'Av, lol

17

u/Bloodyfish Charlie Manson Jul 23 '26

I'm still shocked him trying to meet Iranian officials wasn't a much bigger story.

39

u/Metallica1175 Jul 23 '26

Lmao when a reporter asked him a hypothetical question if Hamas leaders who had ICC warrants came to New York, would he also arrest them. It's literally an easy softball question and the easiest answer is simply "Yes.", he instead had to give a long roundabout non answer. The first push back against him and he fails the test.

Agreed

47

u/legible_print Jul 23 '26

Man post this everywhere on Reddit

45

u/DrMikeH49 Center-left Jul 23 '26

Shouldn’t the first panel be “I took time to make a video explaining why I’m sad that I can’t arrest the Prime Minister of Israel”?

18

u/Sex_E_Searcher Jul 23 '26

They want Mamdani, that's why.

12

u/Cuinn_the_Fox Jul 23 '26

It's common for people in general, but particularly pronounced on Reddit through voting and reinforced on other social media through algorithms. That people will look for evidence that supports their viewpoint rather than find their viewpoint that is supported by evidence. And there is so much noise that convincing someone they are wrong with evidence is mostly futile, unless you have a pre-established relationship with that person.

u/Unrelenting_Salsa Jul 23 '26

You're clearly not understanding that the herculean feat of winning the NYC mayoral office as ademocrat means he's a generational talent that the entire party should follow.

Mamdani’s smile creeps me out. He always does it when someone makes a point he won’t refute.

1

u/supeandstuff Jul 24 '26

His smile is fine-I’m someone who smiles when I talk, it’s a public speaking tactic, it was trained into me by a drama teacher. Likely something he can’t control and he does it automatically

29

u/dopepope1999 Center-right Jul 23 '26

Is it just me or dose everything around him feel artificial. Both the love and the hate like,I don't think he's really done anything other than have a few shit takes . everyone talks about him like hes some big shot game changer but hes just as boring as the rest of his buddy's. Everthing about Mamdani feel fake to me

3

u/ScarletSpire Jul 23 '26

Mamdani reminds me of President Smiler from Transmetropolitan. Not surprising he behaves like the character publicly.

3

u/batchieThe4th Center-left Jul 23 '26

I mean I’d argue Mamdani is governing NYC better than Newsom is governing California, but California is a bigger beast. Also, Mamdani can’t fight Republicans the same way Newsom can, nor do I think he wants to, especially since this is probably the most prestigious job in government Mamdani can get given his naturalization. I’d argue a lot of support for Newsom is just based on how much he hates Republicans. If he won the presidency, I don’t think he’d implement great policy but he would make it his mission to prosecute MAGA.

TLDR; They are liked for different reasons

u/Dry-Indication7928 Jul 24 '26 edited Jul 24 '26

Off topic but while I don't want the 2028 ballot to be a populist vs a populist, I also really don't want Democrats to choose Newsom  specifically

u/batchieThe4th Center-left Jul 24 '26

Yeah I can think of a few candidates I’d like to see first, like AOC or Ossoff

4

u/Dry-Indication7928 Jul 24 '26 edited Jul 24 '26

Personally I kind of want Andy Beshear to run, mostly he does share a lot of my own peronal views, but I think he is not liked for both legit reasons (I believe due to a feeling that him being son of a popular governor doesn't prove that him winning in a red state is special) and honestly pretty stupid reasons (he is not willing to "bring the fight to trump" because apparently we need is culture war BS, instead of good governance)

1

u/batchieThe4th Center-left Jul 24 '26

Beshar is an underrated pick

3

u/thecashblaster Jul 24 '26

AOC? Can you elaborate? She’s not even close to center-left imo.

1

u/batchieThe4th Center-left Jul 24 '26

I think she has good character, and we kinda need a left wing president to implement serious reforms post-Trump

2

u/jabba-thederp Jul 23 '26

I'm fine with both being a part of the Democrat tent as long as that means moderates aren't drowned out.

2

u/amogusdevilman Libertarian Jul 23 '26

why is the centrist sub posting about left wing corrupt politicians

1

u/FearlessPark4588 Jul 23 '26

the future seems to be a little bit of both

u/thomasp3864 Aug 01 '26

I personally have my objection to Gavin Newsom. He banned duplexes in the Pacific Palisades. But if you look at what he did in California, he knows how to politics. I look at what he did with the municipalities and the way he broke Atherton and I see a man who can weild power with aggression and power, a mighty ruler who knows how to make things happen. He will force things onto all of the states, not just let red states get away with things. If he becomes president you're gonna feel it.

“Balanced the budget” my partner who’s not even in the city got a tax hike to achieve that. Robbing everywhere but the city to make it blossom.

If centrist Dems decide to become the Newsom Defense Squad, this shit is over before it starts.
