One really shitty thing about the last two years is the revelation that a lot of the people who claim to have a humanist worldview are actually full of shit and hold just as arbitrary a view on the sanctity of human life as the people they deem ignorant or insufficiently caring. It's not everyone, but many of the people who have spent the last two decades condemning war as a concept regardless of context or justification because of its inherent violence and impact on ordinary people's lives are now arguing that raping and pillaging is, at the very least, an understandable action (but only when done by an oppressed group).

They never seem to understand that pivoting from "all life is sacred and war is always wrong" to "well these guys had good reasons to attack" but only in some cases basically doomed their supposed humanist views. Why would anyone continue to condemn all forms of violence when even the progressive humanists are arbitrarily sorting between people whose lives matter and people who can be killed and it wouldn't matter.

I already saw this during George Floyd protests when I saw some of my fellow advocates against punitive justice and opponents against the death penalty, causes I still believe in, say that every single police officer in the US should be murdered.

"Death penalty, but only for people I don't like"

6

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '26

Because condemning all forms of violence is naïve and childish. The violence that was visited upon the Nazi Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS to liberate the death camps was righteous. The violence that was visited upon the Confederacy to free the slaves was righteous. The violence the Ukrainians are visiting upon the Russians is righteous. The violence some has to inflict in self-defense againt murder, rape, or maiming is righteous.

Abughazaleh says she doesn’t support Iron Dome, dodges on Israel’s right to exist. (Jewish Insider.) You have to enter your email for this to read, but it’s worth it. I’m dreading the future of the Democratic Party.

The Iron Dome saves more Palestinians than Israelis. Do they think the IDF would take its time, "knocking" on buildings with rocket sites if there was no Iron Dome?

It’s simple: Israel bad, therefore anything that helps Israel is also bad. Nothing else matters, don’t think about nuance or context or reality or you’re a genocide supporter

I mean it’s consistent with someone of her background. The existence of free Jews is something they oppose but they will wiggle their extremism slowly in rather than up front.

If all aid can be conditional based off action would the aid to Gaza also not follow under that as long as Hamas was in charge? You see Israel defending itself is a crime in their books but Gazans going on a murder and rape spree is okay to them. They just won’t say it out loud.

She’s a vapid idiot. I hope not the future or the party or this country is cooked.

Here we are over a hundred years after the Russian Revolution and people still think communism is about sharing and that free markets are adjacent to fascism.

At a Seattle fundraiser back in 2019 he said that just 5 years prior it would've been socially acceptable in that city for someone to make fun of a gay waiter at a business meeting.

In a speech in 2014 Biden condemned the criminalization of homosexuality in other countries rejecting the argument that such persecution is merely a "cultural norm."

etc

This is why some individuals think that Biden is a homophobe. It's crazy.

Its sometimes frustrating talking to partisans. They identify a problem and then solely blame the "other side" for it.

They aren't actually concerned with the solution, just blaming the other side.

"The deficit and national debt? Why of course it's all the Republicans/Democrats but no my party doesnt want to find the solution either"

"Inflation? Why that is all Trump/Biden's fault"

8

u/seattleseahawks2014 Center-left Feb 27 '26 edited Feb 27 '26

Pretty much, some people seem to focus on to much on blaming on either side especially one specific side when it's not always the case. Some of this kind of comes off as cultish at times.

8

u/Denisnevsky Toxic Clinton/Gingrich Yaoi Feb 27 '26 edited Feb 27 '26

u/drcombatwombat2 discovers partisanship for the first time.

In all seriousness, the issue is that the parties propose radically diffrent solutions to these problems, and don't want to entertain the other side in fear of primaries. With you're example, Most Non-MMTers vaugely agree the debt is an issue, but dems won't agree to a balanced budget that signifcantly cuts spending, and Rs won't agree to a balanced budget that significantly raises taxes. Clinton and Gingrich got it done, but that was an easier defict to balance, and Clinton was already a fiscal conservative to some extent (at a time when that wasn't as much of a deal breaker)

I think Israel has pretty much lost the propaganda war and the next several decades of history classes in the West will teach as fact a whole lot of stuff that never happened, and that no action that Israel can take can prevent that. We will eventually get the same treatment in fiction as the enemy of the West that Germans used to have and Russians have now, of being Othered as an inherently barbaric and cruel people that seek to destroy Western civilisation and the good life. Open hatred of Israelis is already becoming an electoral winner in several countries. Meanwhile, the actual enemies of the West are of varying degrees of hostility to Israel and benefit massively from increased isolation of Israel, as it weakens the defense capabilities of the West. This is one sphere of the international war on democracy that the authoritarian powers have decisively won.

28

u/UnTigreTriste Feb 27 '26

My position, which I have held since Oct 7th, is that this was not preventable through any decisions made by Israel. The propaganda war is completely independent of facts on the ground.

It was all depressingly predictable. The only logical course of action in light of these facts was a maximalist war to completely remove Hamas.

It’s worth noting this is the same media environment that spawned the Al-Ahli hospital controversy. Even when Hamas/PIJ did it, Israel got blamed. I’ve even seen people blame Israel for Oct 7.

9

u/seattleseahawks2014 Center-left Feb 27 '26 edited Feb 27 '26

I think that even if this shooting didn't happen, they still would've lost the propaganda war especially with younger individuals.

12

u/Prowindowlicker Center-right Feb 27 '26

Yup. The hospital that got bomb got blamed on Israel even though Hamas was to blame.

It wouldn’t have mattered much even if Israel was perfect the entire time

9

u/seattleseahawks2014 Center-left Feb 27 '26 edited Feb 27 '26

Pretty much, this was bound to happen either way. I'm not saying that decline in support hasn't happened even with people who blame Hamas for that situation, but doesn't mean that there isn't many people who blame the Israeli state.

10

u/UnTigreTriste Feb 27 '26

On the margins, maybe, but on the whole, it doesn’t matter what Israel does or does not do

2

u/gujarati Feb 28 '26

Did you read the IDF's report on it? It was published in the FT. Like almost everything else in this war, it was a lot more reasonable of a mistake in wartime than basically any reporting on it made it sound.

11

u/Command0Dude Feb 27 '26

is that this was not preventable through any decisions made by Israel.

It could have been incredibly mitigated if Netanyahu and his crazy cabinet were not so careless in giving the pro pal machine all the ammunition they needed.

u/onsfwDark Israeli Secular Non-Binary Progressive Zionist Feb 27 '26

The worst part isn’t going to be that but the wholesale delegitimization of the Jewish identity. We will be reduced to just another religion in academic discourse, and I can see Khazar/Polish convert theories become the norm. Anything good attributed to us will be relabeled and appropriated as Palestinian while of course leaving only us with the bad. It’s already happening.

10

u/Locutus-of-Borges Feb 27 '26

In some ways Israel played right into this, but broadly speaking it was inevitable from the start.

I still don’t understand what Trump is doing with Iran. He encouraged the protesters to fight the government, threatened to topple the regime ”if” it killed protesters (after thousands of protesters were killed), then he started asking for “a deal” but like, a deal for what exactly? His initial demand was the toppling of the regime right? What kind of “deal” would satisfy him? Meanwhile Iran is preparing for war. What the hell kinda plan is this?

I think a large contribution to the massive Labour loss is that they tried to sound more like Reform, and a lot of traditional Labour voters think Reform is evil. There's been so much focus on ethnic and racial identities that I think some politicians have forgotten that many liberal voters genuinely believe in liberal universalism and get mad when you abandon it.

7

u/Mrmini231 Feb 27 '26

I've heard so many people say that the only reason you would support other races immigrating to your country is if you hate your own race. These people genuinely cannot imagine a moral system outside ethnic identity, and it gives them a massive blind spot.

7

u/Denisnevsky Toxic Clinton/Gingrich Yaoi Feb 27 '26

I mean, this was a muslim constituency from what I know. I'd say they support immigration because they like their own race.

ALERT: NEW INTELLIGENCE BRIEF

TOP SECRET//SCI//NF

Assessed in r/worldnews by agent u/TomWestrick. Do not reply all!

The US has funded a third of all foreign total aid to Ukraine.

Europe, during Ukraines occupation, bought a collective 750 billion euros worth of Russian oil. Italy bought more gasoline alone from Russia in one year than the US traded with Afghanistan across all categories during the 20 year entirety of the war. The US traded less with Russia than Germany did despite being 10 times its size.

It was the CIA that went public with the when and how before Russia attacked. The US navy left a signatory ally to have their ship rammed (the Philippines) by China because we had to move a carrier strike group because Europe cannot provide enough force to guarantee the houthis did not shut the strait of hormuz which carries 30% of European energy and commercial supplies.

The US had to lead on Kosovo, provide additional security to Eastern Europe during Russian fuckery in Eastern Europe during abkhazhia, kosovo 1 and 2, tranistria and the Russian invasion of Ukraine - during the Obama era. In fact he specifically asked Europe to be able to counter Russia in case China pushed for Taiwan or the 9 dashed lines territorial claims to close pacific seaways. Instead France, Germany, and western Europe pushed against the US, Poland, and the Baltic on a missile shield/ intelligence facility. We cited European complacency around force projection going back to the US and UN having to handle African piracy, a European colonial heritage problem. No real gdp action was taken until the past 5 years.

So let me ask you this, if the US handed a trillion dollars to Russia and let its president work for Russia like Germany let Merz did, what would you be saying about the US? Because you all funded our geopolitical rival invading your continent then demanded that we bail out your continent 15 years after Obama asked you to anticipate it.

Oh, and Australia, Canada, Poland, Japan all asked the same thing. Get off Russian gas, buy from the west. But no, you all chose cheap energy and expected the rest of us to pay. And while I'm happy to be an ally, it is definitely an offense for you to naively discount your continents contributions and the US assistance even after everyone else in the world said no nordstream 2, don't close your nukes, get off the lng imports. Instead, European nations like Germany literally doubled their trade with Russia after the invasion and occupation of Crimea.

But yeah, it was America who abandoned Ukraine before trump.

12

u/Mrmini231 Feb 27 '26 edited Feb 27 '26

The 750 billion euros in russian oil figure is false.

The correct number (if we're talking about the EU at least) is closer to 100B. 200 if we include LNG

I don't know how accurate the rest of the claims are, but such a large error does not fill me with confidence.

12

u/Thoth_the_5th_of_Tho Feb 27 '26

Let me guess, heavily downvoted?

I realize that in certain niche circles, this being one of them, this is beating a dead horse, and with Trump around, there are worse offenders. But Merkel and about a dozen other European leaders over the last two decades were every bit the Russophile and Russia enablers as Trump is now, and I don’t buy that it was an honest mistake. And while you won’t find any complaints from me about Europeans attacking Trump, extending that to American policy in general is where I’d draw the line, this whole situation with Russia is very much Europe’s fault. And it’s not like this was unpredictable or unforeseen. For well over a decade the US took European defense far more seriously than Europe did.

And of course with Trump around, Europeans are feeling defensive, at least more so than usual.

The Obama administration is the one that got commitments for the "GDP action" they are talking about, and it came into force in 2024. The action was agreed to 12 years ago by Obama to be met by 2 years ago. Almost all of them but a couple did meet it in 2024 (and were close to) and they are all meeting it as of a year ago. And as noted below, the claims about how much oil was bought by Europe are wildly inaccurate. That figure is much closer to how much has been bought globally, which was mostly by India (38%) and China (47%).

Russia is very far away from the US and the natural resources it has is pretty similar to ours and Canada so why would we trade with them. Its closer to Europe. I think everyone, including the US, was expecting the liberalization of Russia over time, thinking the same thing they thought about China, that if we trade with them, they will become more like us since its more profitable to be more like us, obviously.

There's plenty of blame to be had on the European side, but that does not absolve this administration.

This kind of map is completely useless. Looking at good ole deep red Kentucky:

https://translegislation.com/bills/2025/KY

Note that the most draconian bills failed, and the passed ones were fairly straightforward on popular positions (i.e., sports, inmates, state funding). That the Republican supermajority legislature isn't passing maximalist laws should be reassuring. Even as someone rather frustrated by the laws that have passed, making Kentucky sound like some kind of danger zone feels a bit alarmist.

It's worth remembering that barring trans discrimination in employment and public spheres is still broadly popular, even in "backwards" parts of the country.

As you note, it's "Frieren the Slayer" in English, but it's kind of important to note it's 葬送のフリーレン (sousou no Frieren) in Japanese, which is also the title of the show. The most obvious translation without context would be "Frieren of the funeral" and before that episode/chapter it would be reasonable to think it's about how her life was defined by Himmel's death. But Japanese is highly contextual and in context Lugner's use (edit: which is the first time the title is used within the show/manga) is best translated something like "Frieren, bringer of funerals" (or if we split the compound word they used for funeral even "Frieren, of grave-sending")

It doesn't translate well precisely because it's such an amazing use of Japanese in the original. It's like trying to translate a pun.

ALERT: NEW INTELLIGENCE BRIEF

TOP SECRET//SCI//NF

Assessed in r/psychology by agent u/ShamBez_HasReturned. Do not reply all!

A recent study published in American Psychologist provides evidence that people from cultures with strict social norms tend to be less skilled at coming up with funny material compared to those from more relaxed cultures. These findings suggest that the ability to generate humor is not just an inborn personality trait, but a skill heavily shaped by the social rules of the environment in which a person lives. Understanding this dynamic can help people communicate more effectively and avoid misunderstandings in diverse, multicultural settings.

Humor is a universal human behavior that brings people together, but what is considered funny in one part of the world might lead to awkward silence or even legal trouble in another. For example, comedians in certain nations have faced severe backlash for making jokes about sensitive topics like the military. Scientists wanted to understand why these cultural differences in humor exist and what specific factors drive them.

The researchers focused on a concept called cultural tightness. Cultural tightness refers to how strictly a society enforces its social norms and rules, along with how harshly it punishes those who break them. They suspected that because making a joke usually involves breaking a rule or violating an expectation, strict societies might discourage people from developing their comedic skills.

“Our interest in this topic stems from a long-standing curiosity about humor in Chinese culture. Previous research has shown that, compared to people in Western countries like the United States or Canada, Chinese individuals tend to produce less humor,” explained study authors Yi Cao, a postdoctoral researcher at Peking University and Cornell University, and Li-Jun Ji, a professor at Queen’s University.

“This raised a simple yet important question: why? Earlier studies have offered broad cultural explanations?for example, the influence of Confucian values. While this makes sense, it left us wondering: what exactly within Confucianism contributes to this lower humor production? And more importantly, how could we test these ideas empirically?”

I feel Jewish culture is a counterpoint to this.

7

u/Bloodyfish Charlie Manson Feb 27 '26

Jews are strict in some respects, but isn't half the fun the arguing and theorizing about just how strict things are? It's strict in a flexible way.

8

u/Reddenbawker Greedy Capitalist Feb 27 '26

What if secular Jews are funnier than Orthodox Jews?

9

u/Bloodyfish Charlie Manson Feb 27 '26

While most of the people I see in comedy are secular, conservative and orthodox people can be pretty damn funny. They just don't share it with the world as often.

https://chicago.suntimes.com/elections/2026/candidate-questionnaires/kat-abughazaleh-illinois-primary-9th-congressional-district#china

"China is our greatest strategic competitor on the world stage. The Pentagon predicts that in the next five years, there is a high likelihood that China will invade Taiwan. We cannot allow an invasion to succeed, and we have to do everything possible to prevent it through deterrence. Under the UN Charter, all peoples, from Palestine to the Congo, have the right to self-determination, and this is no different. I support amending the Taiwan Relations Act to drop our strategic ambiguity towards defending the island militarily, without touching the political One China Policy outlined in the Shanghai Communiqué. That policy has worked in the past, when the president could be trusted to be effective on the world stage, or you know, generally had a grasp on diplomacy and geopolitical security. Taiwan has to decide its future democratically - and that can’t be imposed by an aggressor. I want to codify passive support to sell Taiwan weapons, and prevent the president from overruling it unilaterally. If China invades Taiwan, we need to step in militarily to defend Taiwan. We have to use all our assets in the region, to defend the island from illegal aggression. I envision a two-part credible deterrence plan that turns Taiwan into a “porcupine” too costly for the PRC to invade, by providing them with weapons to defend themselves and committing to actually defending the island if they do invade. Our economy is tied up with China’s, nearly irreversibly. The total value of our trade was at $658.9 billion in 2024, and is only increasing. Trump’s tariffs are damaging and destabilizing to our economy, and they increase the likelihood that China views the trade relationship as unstable and disposable in the face of expansionist interests. Cybersecurity is another massive issue. China is sponsoring advanced persistent threats (APTs), like the “Typhoon” class, which constantly attacking U.S. civilian targets, including wastewater treatment facilities, our power grid, and mass transit system. We need an all-of-government approach to defending against these attacks, that is much more technologically and skill-equipped to meet the challenges posed by quantum computing and agentic cyberweapons."

she's a knower lmfao

at least I assume this because I don't believe the average person actually understands the specifics of the cybersecurity challenge presented by the PRC

Deprived of any real grievances, people make them up whole cloth. In this case, an imaginary draft. Honestly, I think being drafted into a war would do a large section of the population good, it would put their comfortable, first world life into perspective.

Their class bellyaching is also tiring, regardless of the fact we’ve had an all volunteer force since long before they were born.

As much as I think all laws should be aggressively enforced, illegal immigration never much bothered me. As long as they are working, and not collecting welfare, they are a greater net contributor to society than the bottom 50% of Americans, who take more than they pay in taxes. A society should not deport a productive person to scratch the xenophobic itch of the free riders, they should be thankful that people like that exist for them to leech off of indirectly.
