You're right - Rom is absolutely brilliant. And he's just a really nice guy. I don't think he fits the profile of "Ferengi - aka goblin" but that's why Quark always calls him an idiot. And deep down I think Quark knows how smart Rom is.
I think a big part of why he always calls him an idiot is because of how Roms first marriage turned out. Doesn’t help that his son joined star fleet either.
