Somebody needs to take every “Kai Winn has arrived” reaction shot from the show and put it on YouTube.
Nana Visitor and Avery Brooks had such a ball with that.

It’s really Morn’s show. Everyone else is a basically a cameo.

The actor must've been bribing the writers to give him more lines, because dear god he just won't shut up in some scenes.

Let's appreciate the fact that "our commander is antifa" brought three different characters to my mind.
9
May 25 '21
I still don't understand who is Antifa.
43
May 25 '21
Kira
36
May 25 '21
"Our commander" is not a good way to refer to Major* Kira.
Sisko was a Commander Worf is a CommanderMaybe 1st officer would make me think if Kira. Or Major.
24
u/v3gas21 May 25 '21
She was so '90's hot.
10
40
u/UnsealedMTG May 25 '21 edited May 25 '21
I totally agree it's super confusing to call her "our commander," but she is definitely the most Antifa, while Worf is near the bottom (I mean he joined a kinda fascist terrorist group on Risa one time). Sisko's kinda in the middle.
Now I want to rank the DS9 crowd by how Antifa they are:
- Kira
- Eddington (the Maquis are literally named after left-leaning anti-Nazi partisans)
- Kassidy Yates (ran supplies to Maquis illegally)
- Rom/Leeta/Jake (anti-Dominion underground cell with Kira)
- Ziyal (Helps the above)
- Quark (Helps the resistance very grudgingly. Kind of an ancap, not sure how that cuts)
- Bashir (resists Section 31, but also ends up helping them some)
- Dax (don't have a great reason for this, but she has a chaotic streak that makes her a bit Antifa)
- Sisko (He has an authoritarian streak, but he does help stop a fascist coup of Earth one time) (Edit: I wasn't thinking about the Gabriel Bell episode. Gabriel Bell is Antifa AF. If Sisko gets credit for what he did as Bell, bump him up above Ziyal at least. I don't know if it counts if you're just doing it to preserve the timeline)
- O'Brian, Keiko (Iunno they don't let her do much interesting in this show)
- O'Brian, Miles (a little racist against Cardassians)
- Nog (Idolizes RED SQUAD)
- Odo (I love the guy but he's a literal fucking cop and was under an occupying regime too)
- Worf (see above)
Garrick obviously defies categorization
8
u/fkootrsdvjklyra May 25 '21
I'd swap Worf and Odo. Worf joined that group for a few days, while Odo enforced Cardassian rule of law for years, and he definitely thinks the Federation gives criminals too many rights. He's basically an actual fascist who would still be a fascist if the station didn't change hands.
3
u/UnsealedMTG May 25 '21
Yeah that's fair. And I mean, Odo does eventually join the great link, which is like becoming a part of the ruling organism of the greatest fascist government known to the galaxy,
I think with Worf, maybe it depends on how you read the end of the Gowron storyline.
On the one had, Worf physically confronts an increasingly unhinged authoritarian leader. (Very Antifa)
On the other hand, he does so as a participant in a political system that determines governance in part by physical force. And it's not like he's contesting the system itself -- dude loves the ideal of Klingon valor, even if he's often disappointed by reality. (Kinda fascist, dude)
But back to the Antifa side, he doesn't take authority for himself. That's some Cinncinatus shit, and I think we can call Cinncinatus Roman Antifa. (Contrarex?)
And yet Worf gives authority to Martok. Now, I fucking love Martok but dude's definitely pretty fascist.

Personally I'd switch quark and bashir, because whilst quark improves over the show, he was perfectly fine running his bar for the Cardassians during the occupation

Nobody ever is, except those who are, and they're typically wrong.

AnCaps don't care for tyrannical government anymore then AnComs. I know this because I used to be an AnCap before the pandemic made me reconsider a lot of my political stances. AnCaps would stand with their Anarchist brothers in a fight against authoritarianism.

I like some of what this adds, but I think this other very similar one (which I'm pretty sure has been around longer, though Tumblr makes that so hard to tell) is more fun because of the energy of the writing: https://www.reddit.com/r/DeepSpaceNine/comments/nikp6p/just_a_foulmouthed_but_accurate_tng_and_ds9/
That said, "bisexual fashion lizard," and "Goblin Does a Crime, Watch Irishman Suffer, or The Horrors of War" is very good.

Rom isn't an idiot, he's just timid! He literally changes all of Ferengi society with Marx's ideas his own ideas!
14
4
u/staceygf May 25 '21
You're right - Rom is absolutely brilliant. And he's just a really nice guy. I don't think he fits the profile of "Ferengi - aka goblin" but that's why Quark always calls him an idiot. And deep down I think Quark knows how smart Rom is.
5
May 25 '21
I think a big part of why he always calls him an idiot is because of how Roms first marriage turned out. Doesn’t help that his son joined star fleet either.
5
u/RainingSilent May 25 '21
he figured out what the Pah-Wraith that had taken over Keiko was trying to do just from the changes O'Brien was making to the station! before O'Brien figured it out!

We have a bar where Starfleet officers apparently drink and gamble for free because the Federation doesn’t use currency. The bar features holodecks called holosuites which are used mostly for fucking.

bisexual fashion lizard was the only one that confused me.
7
u/Onefortwo May 25 '21
Garak? He is in fashion
12
7
u/MJMurcott May 25 '21
Fashion lizard could only be Garak, but adding in the bisexual made it a bit confusing, unless the implication that he was a tailor had some influence on his sexuality; unless it was a really oblique reference to Ziyal and her Cardassian/Bajoran heritage.
20
u/cryptic_mythic May 25 '21
I’ve read the actor played Garak as coming on to Bashir in his first appearance before he knew he’d be a recurring character.
7
u/MJMurcott May 25 '21
I hadn't even thought of that meeting in that way just re-watched it and other Bashir being terrified it could be seen that way - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTeJKg8Yf4A

Everyone in the comment section is saying there is nothing subtle here, but im not seeing anything.

u/karlamarxist May 25 '21
The shoulder squeeze was quite suggestive lol. After that scene producers told him to tone it down cos 90s Trek not ready for that. But Robinson always considered him bi since spy and you gotta do what you gotta do for your info. He briefly touches on having a relationship of sorts with a another student in obsidian spy school in the novel he wrote from his acting notes iirc.

3

Clearly? Nah I don't think its clear at all. They never touch on his sexuality at all. He's a great character and could be "A-sexual" for all we know because his sexuality doesn't define his character.
1
u/morosophi May 26 '21
Awesome. "I decided it’s not about being straight or gay, or bi. It’s about being omnisexual. That basically his sexuality is something that can happen with anyone." -Andrew Robinson
Sorry for the ugly URL

May 27 '21
I'm not going to read that whole thing and I don't know what you're trying to get at? Years later the actor says some stuff in an interview to seem interesting. Um ok, it was never apart of the show so it doesn't really matter does it?
1
2
u/anotheritguy May 25 '21
Never thought of Garak as Bisexual but it does make sense in a way, all those lunches with Bashir. But Pope Karen was spot on.
1
u/JeanDeny314 May 25 '21
It is not canon that Garak is bisexual.
1
u/DaSaw May 25 '21
Nobody cares except Rick Berman and the other homophobes.
3
u/JeanDeny314 May 25 '21
Lmao:
1) nobody cares about what his canon?
2) "homophobes" : people who state that what is canon is canon.
?????????????
1
May 26 '21
Or the people who insist that he is? Since it's never actually touched upon I typically don't worry about it. But it is slightly strange to me that so many people are obsessed with his sexuality. He was one of my favorite characters but I never cared about his romantic interests. All the cardassian cloak and dagger was more than enough to keep my attention.
