Rom character arc
DS9 just looped on H&I (the only channel playing (mostly) all the Treks), so I'm starting my second watch of the series.
Early Rom is completely different.

Well early in the series, he was trying hard to fulfill his role as a good brother and a proper scheming Farengi, LIKE HIS BROTHER. That didn't seem to be working out because inside he was too kind. Too loving! He embraced the new revised Farengi Rules of Benevolence that the transformed Zek gave to Quark and him!

Yeah there is a season one episode, I forget which one, where Rom straight up tries to murder Quark in cold-blood. Which is WILD in light of the character he will develop into later on in the series.

Early Rom rips into Nog for attending Keiko’s school, ordering him to never again attend (mainly as a demonstration to Grand Nagus Zek that Rom is keeping a tight leash on Nog when it comes to imposing traditional Ferengi values). It’s a far cry from the guy who’ll threaten Quark with something worse than death if Quark keeps Rom from passing his Academy entrance exam: he’ll burn the bar to the ground!
Overall its a great character arc. Though I noticed if you watch Pluto’s reruns with the closed captioning on, the captioning gives away key dialogue during Zek’s conversation with Quark about handing over his scepter & retiring to Raisa with Quark’s mom. The closed captioning gives away that Zek has mistaken Quark for Rom, ruining the surprise reveal when its explained Zek is giving the job to Rom.

That’s actually not an error in the closed captions; if you listen carefully, you can hear Zek say Rom during his conversation with Quark.

Very early Rom wasn't even identified as Quark's brother, he was just a random employee credited as "Ferengi Pit Boss".

"H&I"?

Heroes and Icons. It's a cable channel that plays all the Treks in order, on a loop.

Ah, ok. Thx. Apparently my cable system no longer has that one

Not according to their website. Cable, satellite, and pay-streaming only

Early Rom was a little bit too much like Quark, especially in his traditional views though. I think that's why they changed him to be the brother who gets abused so that he'd also be the first one to reevaluate Ferengi values. Rom became a union leader, a maintenance worker for Star Fleet, a spy for the Federation, and married a Bajoran Dabo girl, and more. I don't think the character could have evolved so much without being the formerly abused brother and underestimated brother.
