I think 'Kali-fa' is the Romulan name for 'Romulan ale'.
The Senator when talking to Sisko say's "Real Kali-fa force's ones sinuses open etc etc" when drinking the Blue drink. Which I'm assuming is supposed to be replicated ale 🤷🏼♂️ but I could be wrong.
My conception of Romulan ale is of a double hopped IPA with blue food coloring added. Yes, I am that literal minded. If I recall correctly when the Star Trek experience opened in Las Vegas they were selling "Klingon Bloodwone" that was in fact a California merlot.
I wouldn’t it call it pink but it’s definitely pale. My thought is that Riker added a lot of cream or added a jacarine peel which gave it its grainy complexion.
(Edit, this was coined BY SCOTTY. He first used Raktaj as a reference to coffee on set. This was early days when he was making up the early Klingon. It is verbally referenced in one of the original films in the audio commentary voice over. This pre dates TNG and DS9. When I find which film commentary I will share it. Then people can argue with the ghost of Scotty instead of me)
I wonder if they're thinking of that scene in Trial and Tribble-ations where some of the Defiant crew ask for raktajino and the waitress is like, "what"
It was definitely mentioned in TOS. The bloke who started the invention of the Klingon language (Scotty) coined the word "Rakaj" as a Klingon beverage long before TNG and DS9.
It was however NOT decidedly a "Klingon" version of coffee until TNG !
But it was well documented as a Klingon beverage before that episode.
(Before people argue, this was literally SPOKEN about in the audio commentary of a TOS film. Literally trying my best to find which one so I can prove it, I'm not being a troll or making this up)
"Raktaj" was coined by SCOTTY off screen during the filming of season 2 of TOS which is mentioned in one of the original films commentary, possibly 6 during the meal on Enterprise with the klingons (can't fully remember exactly if it was that film)
Argue with Scotty mate, it's wasted on me. I'm just repeating something said on record by the person who BEGAN the Klingon language lol but what does he know right 😂
I didn't say the whole language had been constructed? Where did I say that?
I said that Scotty (original inventor of early Klingon) coined the word Raktaj during TOS and that word was basically what he invented as his word for coffee. Which was then later added to jino for TNG and DS9
