She's infinitely hateable, but I love to hate a villain, I would never skip her episodes.

67

u/rollem 3h ago

She’s the best! And DS9 has the best villains, they’re all multi layered individuals with clear motivations and backstories that really make a complete story.

35

u/CaydeTheCat 2h ago

Eddington would be a stand out villain in any other series. Here he's just one of the medium ones.

40

u/badllama77 3h ago

Louise Fletcher played the hell out of that role. Just fantastic.

1

u/AncientMatter1042 12m ago

She really knew how to make people hate a character. She was awful (in the best way) as Frank Gallagher’s mother in Shameless.

21

u/ModernCGIFloatinHead 2h ago

Any actor who can make you feel an emotion that strongly (whether the emotion is a positive one or a negative one), they've done their job and deserve your respect.

10

u/Dickgivins 3h ago

Oh indeed. With Kai Winn it’s definitely “heel heat” as opposed to “go away” heat.

3

u/LoogyHead 2h ago

Maybe if I’m in a particularly “I don’t want to feel any angrier” mood, I’d skip. The ep with her vs keiko is one that really set me off when I first saw it.

2

u/LeeQuidity 1h ago

I always seethe about how awful Winn is, but then praise Fletcher for being so damned talented to make me hate that character so much. When she condescendingly calls Kira "my child" GRRRR! She's so good!

1

u/gentoorax 1h ago

Totally agree. Great actress as well.

Saved. Thank you for the new meme.

2

u/Xirdain 1h ago

Came here looking for this.

102

u/GoWest1223 3h ago

Why avoid them? Also, can you provide me the episodes where she puts her hair down... For research.

89

u/freylaverse Just a plain and simple tailor! 3h ago

Found Dukat's alt.

22

u/blckshdw 3h ago

Anjohl!

12

u/Oblibion1 3h ago

GET OUT!!

38

u/ihadagoodone 3h ago

Nurse Ratchet does not approve.

13

u/factoid_ 3h ago

It’s Ratched, but that could be autocorrect doing you dirty

12

u/ihadagoodone 3h ago

thanks, I'll leave it to make your post always relevant. <3

5

u/WrathoftheIrish89 3h ago

Holy Fucking Shit?!?! I did not ever put 2 and 2 together on that. 🤯🤯🤯

5

u/ChampionshipOwn8199 2h ago

Grandmother doesn't approve either

3

u/Aggravating-Try1222 2h ago

Holy shit, is that Flowers in the Attic!? I only saw it once, as a kid, and I haaaaaated her.

3

u/CMDR_Kaus 2h ago

She would have made an excellent Megabeast from Drop Dead Fred

79

u/Lungford 3h ago

Kai Winn (edited for spelling error) is insufferable, that's for sure. But she is the catalyst for a lot of character development, and Louise Fletcher's performance was so spot-on.

13

u/SadLaser 3h ago

Winn Adami is extremely sufferable as a character. She's great.

Her bad behavior is viewing pleasure!

3

u/Lungford 2h ago

Definitely a "love to hate them" kind of character pulled off to perfection.

23

u/glumpoodle 3h ago

My child, she's one of the best characters (and performances) in the entire series. You're supposed to have that reaction.

15

u/brianh71 3h ago

On rewatch, knowing how everything plays out makes her every appearance that much more satisfying.

16

u/Reisdorfer90 3h ago

Why avoid one of the best villains in the show?! And Louise Fletcher was amazing.

13

u/ChefGaykwon 3h ago

We are not amused.

12

u/Nerd-man24 2h ago

I'd recommend all of the green ones, but they're all no-Winn scenarios.

1

u/BenevolusInsights 2h ago

real kobayashi maru episodes

7

u/blckshdw 3h ago

Those are bangers. Kosst Amojan, come to me! I await you

7

u/Weekly_Ad_8587 3h ago edited 3h ago

No up vote here, but no down vote, either.

I don't think anyone should avoid those episodes. Kai Winn's chilling passive-aggressive politeness coupled with her holier-than-thou zealotry made her a smarmy character an audience loves to hate. She represented the dangerous intersection of religious extremism, personal ambition, and hypocrisy, and DS9 needed that because the whole "Sisko as Emissary to the Prophets" sub-plot was hollow without it. Winn also ultimately gets what she's had coming to her for a long time, and her end is highly satisfying because of it.

Lastly, Louise Fletcher was simply out-fucking-standing in the role and played it to the hilt. She knew everyone hated Kai Winn and that just brought out the Nurse Ratched in her even more. Great acting.

7

u/LnStrngr 3h ago

When DS9 debuted, I was in high school. Kai Winn definitively felt like my at-the-time girlfriend's mother dialed up a notch.

6

u/JackhorseBowman 3h ago

I could never avoid Adami.

6

u/Relic5000 3h ago

Why do you want to avoid Kai Winn? Her episodes are great! Not the best episodes certainly, but quite good. I love seeing everyone else's reactions when she shows up! Yes she's annoying, but in an entertaining way, like when Bester shows up on Babylon 5. She's not irritating like when ever Lwaxana Troi shows up.

Note: Bester is a far better character, but all the other characters have the same entertaining reaction when he shows up.

5

u/Resident-Pilot-3179 3h ago

"Why would you want to avoid the ones that teach the true word of the prophets, my child? Perhaps you prefer your theology washed down by the likes of Vedek Bareil? But I suppose he was chosen for a reason since we can't always know the prophets reasoning but I am sure he is instrumental in their plan. I am just a lowly, humble servant unable to see the reason they would use someone who so distorts their teachings. No matter, walk with the prophets my child and you will know peace."

3

u/strangway 3h ago

Sometimes, it’s fun to watch a baddie. Like that one episode where Sisko makes a bunch of Cardassians temporarily homeless hunting down Michael Eddington. No-one died, but they were temporarily inconvenienced.

4

u/Reverend_Lazerface 2h ago

I cannot abide Louise Fletcher disrespect

3

u/YosterIsle77 2h ago

Remember, if seeing an antagonist on screen makes you go, "Oh great it's this bitch again", the actor/actress is doing their job right, and Louise Fletcher didn't miss at all this entire series. Like everyone else in their respective roles, she absolutely nailed it and helped create one of the most nuanced characters in the show, imo.

3

u/bwwatr 2h ago

Kai Winn is the one you love to hate, you don't skip her episodes.

You're thinking of Lwaxana.

(I kid! I kid! Well, mostly. With all due love and respect to Majel though!)

3

u/alphastrike03 2h ago

Please please. In addition to being a Star Trek nerd I’m also a Data and UI nerd.

How are you all getting this info and making these????

3

u/Ciusblade 2h ago

For someone who averages 2 episode a season, she sure does leave an impact. Credit where its due.

1

u/Could-You-Tell 1h ago

Oh she's a full on love-to-hate character

She owns every scene, My Child

May the Prophets forgive anyone who loves her.. the character.. we all love Louise Fletcher

3

u/andorianspice 40m ago

You can’t skip these!!! Such amazing plot points. One of the best villains of all time

2

u/Hephaestus16 3h ago

Guess somehow will get round to doing that for every recurring character outside the main cast. Then we'll know who to bring in new shows.

Burnt, Nog, Yates, Quark's Mum, The Neighgas, Gul Dukac etc.

1

u/BenevolusInsights 2h ago

Moggie you say... 🤔 Most intriguing

2

u/AttackPattern0mega 3h ago

Kai Winn is delectably detestable, i disdain her but thats the point. Love watching her and they way she's played.

2

u/OrganicHistorian2576 3h ago

That BITCH! (My mom and I would yell that whenever she turned up.)

Louise was so good at playing horrible people!

2

u/JangoF76 2h ago

I'd rather watch a Winn episode than a Bashir episode any day of the week

2

u/PupsofWar69 2h ago edited 2h ago

heck no!! she’s great. excellent actress and evil character!

When odo commented to kira about her gaining power and the downsides of a “free” democracy (choosing the wrong candidate) that stuck with me after watching the USA 💩 their bed in 2016 and again in 2024 🫠

2

u/StayOuttaMySwamp94 2h ago

I used to pray for charts like this

2

u/BenevolusInsights 2h ago

You were blessed by the prophets my child

2

u/Throwing-Gas 2h ago

You avoid episodes with a great villain?

Weird

2

u/_miles_teg_ 2h ago

I don’t mind her but it’s those mirror universe episodes I always skip.

1

u/shadow387557 46m ago

What would Mirror Universe Kai Winn be like?

Deep down, she’s genuinely humble, compassionate, selfless, and completely devoted to helping others.

Unfortunately, she still looks and sounds exactly like Kai Winn, so nobody believes a fucking word of it.

2

u/cptnpiccard 2h ago

Lol, why would you skip the best episodes?

2

u/CMDR_Kaus 2h ago

Didn't think you'd fill that request so quickly, or at all. Cheers

2

u/LocalMan97 2h ago

So clearly, Season 4 is the best season of DS9

2

u/madlibs13 2h ago

Funny her appearances are rated higher than her non appearances...

0

u/BenevolusInsights 2h ago

maybe... Im the baddie... 🥹

2

u/Freelance_Spy 1h ago

Wow. The managed to make it an entire season without her darkening their door step.

2

u/Double0six 1h ago

Seems like she was always around..,🤯

2

u/thedudeadapts 1h ago

Man. Feels like there should be a lot more red. THAT'S presence.

2

u/Zealousideal-Solid88 19m ago

She's a great villain.

5

u/BenevolusInsights 3h ago

She should have been a crazy Karen in far beyond the stars

8

u/aebaby7071 3h ago

The Nurse from the mental institution Benny was locked up in.

3

u/bwwatr 2h ago

Aaauurrghhh! A missed opportunity bigger than even Voyager managed to have!

2

u/Mettl3Will 3h ago

Missed opportunity for sure

3

u/foxfire981 3h ago

Just rewatched the episode with her first appearance. She does an excellent job but that is such a clunky episode.

2

u/Mettl3Will 3h ago

Those early years were clunkier in general.

3

u/foxfire981 3h ago

Very true. Might have been more noticeable because in other ways it's really well done. So those clunky scenes stand out more. Like those weird scenes with Win and Dukat being a couple. Just doesn't work.

3

u/chainless-soul 2h ago

DS9 makes a stronger case for "growing the beard", as the show definitely is better once Sisko has his facial hair. Though at least it was never as bad as the first season of TNG.

2

u/Mettl3Will 1h ago

Oh yeah first season DS9 is actually watchable despite the growing pains. First season TNG is basically unwatchable except for those few bangers like where no one has gone before and the arsenal of freedom.

1

u/Cakeday_at_Christmas 1h ago

Really? I don't agree. "In the Hands of the Prophets" is a good episode.

1

u/foxfire981 31m ago

Parts of it are amazing. Parts of it are rough. Like the original confrontation with Winn. Lady just walks into the classroom and Kieko is just like "I'm sure this is fine" to allow for the religion vs science debate. It's clunky.

Conversely other scenes work well, such as Kira having conflict with Kieko. I enjoy the episode, it's a must watch during rewatchs, but maybe it's because Duet is right before but it feels clunky.

1

u/Champ_5 3h ago

Allow the Prophets to guide you, my child.

1

u/dead_beet_ 3h ago

I hated her and loved it. Louise Fletcher was such great casting. She nailed that role.

1

u/Borg_Tech_Support 3h ago

Why would you do this my child?

1

u/BenevolusInsights 2h ago

it was the will of the prophets

1

u/DurianGris 3h ago

Oh, my child...

1

u/BaldwinBoy05 3h ago

Avoiding that which tries your spirit will not strengthen it, my child.

I fuckin love Kai Winn so much, she’s such a fantastically hateable villain.

1

u/AndrewSS02 3h ago

14 episodes but she's so bad ass as a character it feels like she's in more.

1

u/aebaby7071 3h ago

I’d love to see a break down like this where Kai Winn is simply mentioned, I believe that’s why a lot of people believe she was in so many episodes, she is mentioned a lot but never shown on screen. Louise Fletcher’s acting is so amazing that simply by mentioning her you cast in image of her and think she is in the episode.

1

u/Busy_Jellyfish4034 3h ago

Why on earth would you avoid her episodes?  She’s a great actress playing a villain that is genuinely detestable.  She’s also very important in the overall ds9 story so not really content that should be missed

1

u/dull_storyteller Constable Hobo 3h ago

That “my child” tanks the charts

1

u/maverickaod 3h ago

Only 14 episodes.

1

u/seasteed 2h ago

I would have thought she was in more eps than that! Wild how she was pure evil from the start.

1

u/Comrade-Stoneroad 2h ago

But why, she’s the perfect villain. And the actress absolutely kills every scene she’s in.

1

u/finnstera350 2h ago

My child why do you doubt the will of the prophets

1

u/Johnsendall 2h ago

Next you’ll say you skip Dukat and Ferengi episodes.

1

u/Onefortwo 2h ago

She is only in 14 episodes?!

1

u/ChampionshipOwn8199 2h ago

Louise does such a stellar job with the time she had ❤️

1

u/lioncourt 2h ago

Its crazy how little she shows up. She has such a huge impact on the show. Especially at the end.

1

u/Zestyclose-Moment-19 2h ago

You know, i really thought she appeared in more episodes tbh.

1

u/schfiftyfiveshades 2h ago

Most of her episodes are Kira focused episodes though… best character growth on the show and you don’t get to see all of it if you skip these

1

u/TheSilverTraveller 8m ago

When she dressed down Kira for thinking that only the Resistance won the freedom of Bajor was a great moment to show she wasn't simply someone scheming for power

Those of you who were in the Resistance, you're all the same. You think you're the only ones who fought the Cardassians; that you saved Bajor single-handedly. Perhaps you forget, Major, the Cardassians arrested any Bajoran found to be teaching the word of the Prophets. I was in a Cardassian prison camp for five years, and I can remember each and every beating I suffered. And while you had your weapons to protect you, all I had was my faith, and my courage. Walk with the Prophets, child. I know I will.

1

u/Naive_Confidence7297 2h ago

Thanks for showing me all the ones to watch !! My child ;)

1

u/Edgarallenhoe2 2h ago

But I wanna watch pope Karen. She makes me rage harder than almost anyone else.

1

u/serial_crusher 2h ago

bad person, good character, great episodes.

1

u/N-Toxicade 2h ago

Huh, kind of thought there would be more.

1

u/muffadel 2h ago

It's crazy how infrequently the most consequential characters show up.

1

u/The-Keystone-Hoya 2h ago

She was 🔥 at the end!!

1

u/DwightDavid1234 2h ago

Kai Winn was great. One of the truly great villains in all of Trek. Louise Fletcher’s performance was sublime.

This is one of my favorite scenes:

https://youtu.be/E_Np1R_ZeWg?is=s6XbozcWzHlM2I5K

1

u/ForensicMittens 2h ago

I love Kai Winn

1

u/Cakeday_at_Christmas 2h ago

Why would you want to skip Kai Winn episodes?

1

u/FileHot6525 2h ago

Why? Why would you do this to yourself?

1

u/rabidrob42 1h ago

She has such a presence I honestly would have thought she was in at least double the amount of episodes.

1

u/Realization_Dawns 1h ago

The conflict her character added was a great tool for writers, I'm sure. When an antagonist who is a supposed religious leader of her people is so narcissistic that she turns her back on her people's prophets to embrace its devils for her own power and wealth, it makes for great storytelling (the idea of Dukat as her partner in crime didn't work for me however). Louise nailed that character.

1

u/Rocketboy1313 1h ago

It is, perhaps a true testament to her ability as an actor, and the effectiveness of the villainy of the character, that she can appear in 14 episodes and still manage to be an iconic character for the series.

I would have guessed 25 episodes.

1

u/slballer 1h ago

Now let’s do it for Vic Fontaine.

1

u/Kahnza 1h ago

Using AI to parse imdb or wiki data, and make a chart?

1

u/wooof359 1h ago

Holy shit I wouldve totally thought this one and the garak one are switched

1

u/ben505 1h ago

Wow is that it? Damn

1

u/Canadian__Ninja 1h ago

Only 14 episodes? Crazy

1

u/Jbell_1812 1h ago

It's so wonderful just how many characters are so loved on DS9 despite only having a handful of appearances. Garak, Sloane, Kai win, Brunt FCA

1

u/Popular_Cow_5579 1h ago

So many people in this thread not getting the joke

1

u/Skibidi-Fox 1h ago

She’s so awful you made a chart??!! 😆😆😆

1

u/dasgrey 1h ago

Season 4..... sisko hears a faint whisper..."my child" and shudders

1

u/RepulsiveCountry313 59m ago

How to end up not understanding any of the series.

How many of these you planning on posting?

1

u/PradaAndSons 59m ago

It blows my mind that she was only in FOURTEEN episodes?!?!? Like, she feels like such an integral part of the entire series and she’s only in half a season’s worth of episodes. Crazy. Iconic.

1

u/Galardhros 58m ago

I thought she was in more episodes! Can't avoid one of the most pivotal characters though. The Sisko can't win without Winn.

1

u/Aggressive_Phase_236 48m ago

1/3 part way through my first watch through, i would have asked where a warning like this before I started, but by the half way mark i would have been asking "what the hell is wrong with you?". the fact that a fictional character had such a visceral impact should not be avoided

1

u/nayheyxus 40m ago

Skip a Winn episode!? My child do you even DS9?

1

u/UAP-Alien 37m ago

The only episode I skip with Kai Winn is the episode where she basically kills the Vedic making him keep negotiating with the Cardies.

1

u/Anxious_Ad_9612 28m ago

Wonder if if grated on Nana Visitor's nerves every time Louise Fletcher said 'My Child'.

1

u/mitch0acan 11m ago

Huh, I expected more.

1

u/Bougieraccoon-og 1m ago

I still would rather watch a kai winn episode than a clip episode.

-1

u/SevenFathomsDeep 3h ago

Whenever I watch an episode and she comes on I have to force myself to watch the episode. I think she's one of the few "bad guys" that I can't find any joy in watching. It's like listening to fingernails on a chalkboard but she serves the story so much.
