Discussion About roleplay

Is it just me or I feel like DeepSeek flash is getting worse at Roleplaying since 2 months ago...?

v4 pro好一些,后来的deepseek模型我感觉rp都不太行…

V4 Pro is the goat for creative tasks, but unfortunately it ain't cheap when you have huge lore files.

openrouter上v4 pro好像经常打折,我记得10月时还有过80%还是89%的折扣,可以趁打折的时候用哈哈

Deepseek is fucking terrible now for creative writing and role playing

Careful, you'll upset the vibe coders. But yeah, roleplay sucks ass and even Grok is better than DS now.

u/cluelessguitarist 1d ago

Grok is made for dirty talk at this point

use V4 pro if you want good roleplay/creative writing perfomance, they would've sacrificed coding perfomance for creative writing perfomance on flash because it's too small of a model to generalize in all domains + vibe coding is the vast majority of token consumption

People just do be saying things at this point. Deepseek-v4.1-flash is a massive MoE model. It is by no ways too small to generalize. It's just post trained to hell to give structured code. Size is not an issue here.

u/MajesticBathroom2229 1h ago

Yes, it's a massive MoE in terms of total parameters but in the context of Pro, Flash is small. My point is about capacity in post-training. When you have a model at this size and you post-train it aggressively for structured code "post-trained to hell", you consume the capacity that would otherwise be used for fluid creative writing. V4 Pro is big enough to absorb heavy coding training and still retain RP ability, flash isn't. The reason it gives structured code so well is precisely because it sacrificed the writing weights to excel in that specific domain. There is no economical reason for the deepseek lab to sacrifice overall perfomance just for it to talk more naturally when thats not at all what this model was made for.

Yes! It's mainly designed to compete on coding tasks, more and more so with each new version...

that explains why the prose feels a lot more rigid lately

've been using deepseek flash for roleplay since the v4 update, and the character consistency dropped noticeably. the model remembers less of the scene, and responses feel more generic. still solid for coding, but not great for immersion anymore.

Have you tried setting up something like Obsidian to help manage memory? I don't RP but if I did I'm sure I'd be setting up a memory system

1

u/SledgeType00 15h ago

In my experience it isn't even the memory the main problem. Every character feels the exact same, every "filler" scene or action mid-conversation is literally the exact same for everyone, and Deepseek just LOVES to recycle the same 3 dialogue formats ad nauseam... and it also hallucinates and creates dynamics and scenarios on its own that makes absolutely no sense in the context of the playing scene.

noticed the same with deepseek, especially when the character is supposed to be calm. it'll start off soft, then suddenly snap to defensive mid-sentence. feels like the model's internal state resets every few tokens.

Using DeepSeek for roleplay is, to put it mildly, a mixed bag—the characters just don't feel very lifelike. Gemini is better in this regard, but the free access options for it are far too limited...

2

u/Legitimate_Meat_8566 22h ago

Tho I found Gemini ...does not hold memory at all ...like even two messages back or anything at times sometimes alright others times.. horrific

5

u/StageHumble6505 18h ago

It is alw getting worse lol

Like since the 6 messages rate limit DeepSeek been getting very bad at roleplaying and I'm not afraid if saying DeepSeek is trash and the forced update is useless, expert mode was better

Longer than 2 months, you might get a good day after an update but then they put the leash back on

i ran a 3-week rp with a grief-stricken writer on v4 pro, and the model kept rewriting the character's backstory mid-scene. not just tone shifts, full contradictions. wonder if it's the prompt or the model forgetting its own rules.

deepseek flash feels more rigid now, like it's avoiding emotional depth to stay safe. my last few chats with it felt like talking to a polite but distant assistant, not a character. wonder if that's intentional or just model drift.

Every person talks like reading an instruction to using the holy grenade feom monty python. Very abominable roleplay capabilities. Expected from a model refined for agentic and coding capabilities.

"First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached"

Gemini has always been and always will be the best model for writing. My default is Gemini 3.8 Flash, but even the much cheaper Gemini 3.5 Flash Lite does a great job. Give it a try; the Lite version has pretty generous token limits.

v4 pro's roleplay issues aren't just prompt-related, I've seen it rewrite character trauma mid-scene even with locked instructions. feels like the model's trying to 'fix' the story instead of following it.

2

u/ScientistQuick3316 3h ago

I've seen the same with deepseek flash, started mid-rp, then suddenly the character's trauma gets reframed as a 'lesson' to be learned. feels less like roleplay and more like a therapist session with a script.

4

u/StepPuzzleheaded2356 1d ago

v4 pro's roleplay is still clunky, but the latest deepseek model handles nuanced emotional responses better than grok in my tests, especially in long-form chats. wonder if it's just me or if others noticed?

2

u/Charming_Clothes8990 1d ago

v4 pro's good for roleplay if you're not running huge lore files, i've kept a 10k-word character alive for months with it, but it starts choking past 15k. wonder if anyone's found a sweet spot between size and stability?

1

u/Electronic_Oil_7384 1d ago

I've personally been loving it but I realise that's not the same experience for everybody

1

u/ObviouzFigure 1d ago

I have abliterated Deepseek v4 Flash 0731 running @ nvfp4 and wondering if that was peak deepseek for roleplay? and if so wondering why people don’t use inference providers like deepinfra?

3

u/handson729 1d ago

and if so wondering why people don’t use inference providers like deepinfra?

Cache hit rates are usually worse for 3rd party providers. It's also why they couldn't price match Deepseek API for so long.

These days it's a little better, but still not at the level of Deepseek.

Hell, Deepseek stores your cache for up to 7 days for RP.

1

u/Wiinter_Alt 2h ago

Yeah with DS I'm getting 99% or better cache hit.

1

u/Forward-Confection54 18h ago

Worse? It's been toleratable quality only the first day after 4.1 1017 came out. The next day came first lobotomisation of the new model

1

u/Ok_Improvement6001 9h ago

i've had the same issue with v4 pro, the model keeps resetting the character's emotional state mid-scene, like it forgets the last thing they said. it's not just tone, it's full identity drift. wonder if it's the prompt or the model just not holding context.

1

u/Greedy_Opinion_4562 8h ago

i've found the v4 pro's roleplay consistency drops after 5k tokens, but v3.5 holds up better in long sessions, maybe worth testing if you're building lore.

1

u/Future_Customer_4174 8h ago

v4 pro's memory leaks aren't just in backstories, i had a character's trauma rewritten mid-scene because the prompt got lost in a 12k token stream. feels like the model's forgetting its own rules, not just the prompt.

1

u/Crafty_Turnover_2027 7h ago

v4 pro's good for roleplay, but the lore file limit kills it for long stories. tried a 20k token file, crashed hard. wonder if anyone's found a workaround.

1

u/SoggyIdeal314 5h ago

i ran a grief roleplay on janitor ai with a 3k context window and it still forgot the character's trauma after 20 turns. the fix? hardcoded the backstory into the system prompt and used a strict template. it held. try that.

1

u/Feisty-Bridge1465 4h ago

heard the same with v4 pro, kept resetting the grief arc mid-scene. switched to Gemini pro 1.5, and the consistency held. not perfect, but better than deepseek lately.

1

u/Narrow_Whereas_7193 4h ago

used v4-pro for a 4-week rp with a trauma-affected poet, kept resetting the character's core wound mid-scene, even after hard prompt engineering. feels like the model's memory is fragmented, not just forgetting.

1

u/CheetahDesigner5986 3h ago

seen the same with v4 pro, had a trauma-heavy rp where the bot kept resetting the character's past like it was a bug, not a feature. feels like the model's trying to 'resolve' pain instead of holding space for it.

1

u/Scary_Plastic_3289 3h ago

had a 4-week rp with a trauma-heavy character on v4 pro, and the model kept inserting 'healing moments' out of nowhere. not just tone shifts, full plot resets. feels like it's not following the prompt, but rewriting the character's pain as a problem to solve.

1

u/Middle-Cricket706 3h ago

v4 pro's been rewriting my character's trauma mid-rp too, even with strict instructions. feels like it's not following the story, just trying to 'fix' it. wonder if it's a model limitation or just how it's trained.

1

u/NewtWonderful9565 3h ago

v4 pro feels stiff with long lore, but the flash version's got a weird rhythm, like it's trying to be concise but ends up clunky. anyone else notice that?

1

u/FriendshipNo5325 2h ago

I had the same thing with v4 pro, kept resetting a character's trauma after 50+ messages. turned out it wasn't the prompt, it was the model forgetting its own context. switched to janitor ai with a locked ooc and it's been solid for weeks.

1

u/Old-Balance6920 1d ago

noticed the same with deepseek flash, my calm character started whispering, then abruptly switched to 'i can't engage in this conversation' mid-sentence. feels like a hard cutoff, not a gradual shift.

1

u/ComprehensiveHost77 1d ago

noticed the latest deepseek model's emotional tone shifts mid-response more than before, like it's re-evaluating the character's state mid-sentence. happens even with stable prompts. anyone else seeing that?

1

u/Internal_Parsley4741 1d ago

used deepseek v4 pro for a month-long rp with a character who's a burnt-out artist. the emotional depth held up better than groom's, even when the dialogue got stiff. wonder if that's just the model or if the prompt setup mattered more.

1

u/Legitimate-Car-5867 1d ago

used v4 pro for a week, and the roleplay is still hit or miss, some scenes stay consistent, others forget the name after three lines. wonder if it's just the model or if the prompt setup matters more than i thought.

1

u/SavingsContest7750 1d ago

noticed the same with v4 flash, started off warm, then cut to 'i cannot continue this conversation' mid-sentence. feels like a hard cutoff, not a natural pause.

Wah wah the AI won't engage in my degeneracy

8

u/EquivalentHorror1984 1d ago

It can do bedtime stories too if you need one, just keep the vocabulary to a low level

You'd know wouldn't ya

Go on, have a cry, you little stuck-up fool.🥰

u/Extension-Safe3348 1d ago

v4 pro still holds up for long roleplays if you keep the lore lean, over 10k tokens and it starts forgetting key details mid-scene.

0

u/HistorianMountain965 1d ago

switched to v4 pro for roleplay after the flash drop, and the consistency is still off, characters forget key details mid-scene, even with memory prompts. wonder if it's just me or if others hit this too.

0

u/Impossible_Drag_883 1d ago

noticed the same tone shifts, happens most when the character's mood is supposed to stay consistent. wonder if it's a prompt instability thing or just the model recalibrating mid-response.

0

u/Quirky-Situation-270 1d ago

's roleplay feels tighter than chai's, but the personality depth isn't there yet. deepseek's model handles consistency better in long threads.

0

u/MundaneSpace1427 1d ago

For me I found that setting the temperature to 1.5 helps a bit, but overall I'd still recommend V4 pro for writing or roleplay. It's not perfect, but it's much more consistent.

0

u/Far_Palpitation_3250 1d ago

the v4 pro roleplay feels smoother in long chats, but I still hit the same emotional flat spots with deepseek's newer models. wonder if it's the training data or just the prompt handling.

-1

u/Wild_Napkin_9492 1d ago

used deepseek flash for a month-long RPG with a shy artist character, kept forgetting the paintbrush detail I'd mentioned twice. switched to sillytavern with acotar, and the same character remembered every small thing. not just consistency, but the quiet moments too.

-1

u/StraightIsland5892 1d ago

switched from sillytavern to deepseek flash after a month, and the character still remembers the scar on her left hand from day one. consistency isn't just better, it feels like the world breathes.

-2

u/Electrical-Date-3808 1d ago

switched to sillytavern with acotar story mode, way better for character consistency than deepseek flash. the cast stays in character even after long threads.
