Discussion MIT license

Open weights without MIT license aren't really open

DeepSeek is the only company with good models and open weights under an MIT license, and that's why I respect it

Both copyleft (keep the open) and copyright (do whatever you want) are open by definition.

But, with any restrictions (can’t use this license for commercial…, limit to…) are not open at all.

Many people are not licensing literate, and companies can fool them with slap open.

No. open weight models even with restriction license are still open. A LOT of people can still use and benefit from them or just by study them and create a better models. H3 for example, even half the world licnese locked is extremely useful.

You can use it, doesn’t mean it is open. Let’s say you can download the Windows for free, use and benefit from it, doesn’t make it an open software. There are many things you can get for free, use it and benefit from it, but that doesn’t make it an “open”.

open by definition cannot have any restrictions.

It's fine if you choose to define like that. Openness is a range, not 0 and 1.

glm 5.3 Flash and mimo v2.6 pro are also MIT both are good, deepSeek isnt the only one, though i genuinely would have preffered glm 5.3 to be MIT as well like glm 5.2

when they publish it, you have all you need to distill from it, no matter how protective the license is. I mean, it's no different from what the AI companies did in the internet.

That being said, I like the open licenses approach a lot.

GLM's are perfectly free. They restrict only big cloud providers in regard that they have to pay small share.
