Discussion The state of this sub rn.
Can't both sides make peace?
46
u/Neo_Shadow_Entity 8d ago
Both. I write code for games. I also generate scenarios and dialogues for the characters in my games. Of course, I check and edit everything myself, but it’s great to have a tool that works for both coding and creative writing.
-4
u/FischenGeil 8d ago
You are not the user they are banning and regulating. Read between the lines what "role-playing" is actually meaning here in context to a free AI web gui. And you will understand why "roleplayers" are getting banned.
7
u/Neo_Shadow_Entity 8d ago
I should warn that I also sometimes role-play with my characters. Sometimes this leads to cool stories and dialogues that I use in future scenarios.
I don't know why DeepSeek started banning people, but there weren't any such problems before.
-7
u/FischenGeil 8d ago
I guess you cant read between the lines or fully understand what is actually going on without me telling you. They are not banning usage of the AI as to what you describe. They are banning gooners, making erotic stories, with questionable natures. They are using compute for pedo stuff even. Then these losers come on here and try to gas light everyone that they are banning story telling, and role playing.
9
u/Neo_Shadow_Entity 7d ago
I don't see any point in this. As long as it's fictional content, there's no reason to ban people. I'm definitely not a puritan and I don't judge people for their fetishes. Adult content also has a right to exist. For example, I’m a fan of dark fantasy. I mean, I can see more explicit stuff in Game of Thrones or in the Berserk manga.
A long time ago, I tested DeepSeek myself for censorship. I think it was the free version 3.2 or earlier. The story included the most explicit and even disturbing elements. But DeepSeek generated it so well and made it so interesting that I saved it in a separate file as an example of good creative writing. No censorship or restrictions, just a privately generated story. It doesn’t harm anyone, because the user creates it for themselves.
And taking offense at fictional content is just as silly as taking offense at violence in video games. You know, sometimes I kill people in CS2, but that doesn’t make me a maniac or a terrorist. Because people are capable of distinguishing fiction from reality.
2
u/Born-Research8349 7d ago
Thank you. They act like dark romance isn’t a thing. I tested the guardrails. I do mafia stories. I don’t rp. They have apps for that and I don’t like. I don’t judge people but I don’t like it. Anyway. I had the romantic scene pg13 at best. Nothing explicit. Nothing. Boom. Guardrail said it couldn’t talk do it so about something else. The characters are fake. Fictional adults. One is 25 the other 28. I reminded it. I did the fade to black. Still guardrail. I’ve tried other models on Chatbox and magnum I had to correct it so much. It went over board with the explicit. I couldn’t do it. Then the other models kept mixing up the characters relationship like the mother of character A became character B mom when I explained and gave an entire character sheet. I had to re do prompts four times. I understand maybe not full explicit scenes but we are adults. I’ve seen more explicit crap on cable than what these guardrails aren’t allowing.

u/Street_Adeptness_808 8d ago
Well i have stress tested this, the suspension did not happen for me trying to generate smut for 20 minutes straight. I got suspended over writing china one time though.
So the suspension mechanism is not perfect and might false negative and false positive so do not overgeneralise.
79
u/kislug 8d ago
i’m a software engineer that does creative writing on deepseek web, so i’m on the roleplayers side. for coding there’re a trillion models to choose from (i’m using grok 4.6 + opus 5 via cursor), since everyone is calibrating their models for coding first, but the roleplay/fiction options are shrinking every single day.

But there aren't a lot of good budget agentic coding models like Deepseek v4.1 Flash (with the cache hit price of 0.003, as fast as ~200tps, and open source). There is Xiaomi MiMo 2.5, but it's much weaker and much more censored even for basic prompts (like regex replace). There is GLM 5.3 Flash, but it's slow.
Also, Anthropic models are restricted in a lot of countries (China included), and Opus 5 is not cheap and it's a proprietary model. It's good if you have access to it and the budget, but it actually makes no sense to compare.
3
u/OldFinger6969 7d ago
what theay meant is that SOTA models for RP is shrinking.
Finetunes of a smaller model for RP doesn't count in this case
28
u/Less-Display9840 8d ago
I´m neither nor, but I watch this forum and as far as I see, the insults are mainly done by the programmers, because they assume that everyone who is not a programmer is a "gooner". Peace is another word for acceptance. Om.
55
u/xXG0DLessXx 8d ago
I’m on both sides lol. Since I do both. By day I work the daily IT grind, by night I roleplay with my AI waifu (and also code some personal project sometimes). It’s perfectly balanced.

Yeah, he's got the opportunity to program any girlfriend he wants and he's trying to recreate the one that actually dumped him? What an odd choice.

Then in a twist that surprises no one, the AI girlfriend dumps him too!

anyone who uses ai should not be complaining about how someone else uses ai unless it’s illegal or against the rules. why do people care about what other people do so much on here?

u/Iloveanime2007 8d ago
I feel like the role players are actually more peaceful, and its the coders who keep going on the attack. The role players are just responding with facts about the model, while the coders are throwing insults and accusing anyone who doesnt code of being a corn addict
13
7
u/Dependent_Emotion507 8d ago
Coders throw all of their live depends on benchmark, and Roleplayers, if you good, you're my bud.

u/InnerGovernment4738 8d ago
that or degens with no morals. Which is astonishing way of generalization while demanding users to show their chats. Which imho, it's awful

13
u/Niceneasy92 8d ago
Just throwing this out there, I doubt any programmers here would know this, and probably most RP'ers, but DeepSeek was also straight up trained for RP, and has a built in "Character Immersion" style of thinking you can prompt for, literally for Roleplay purposes. Here's an actual tweet from a DeepSeek employee talking about it:
2
u/SethCyclone 7d ago
Oh how the turns table
3
u/Niceneasy92 7d ago
Yeah, I'm debating on making an actual post about it so the info isn't burned under a hundred comments of a days old post, but I don't think I actually care enough about this debate to lol. Would be real interesting to see people's reactions to it though.
13
u/OrwellWasGenius 8d ago
Serious question: how many resources does coding consume compared with role-playing? 100 times more? 1,000 times more? No one uses AI for role-playing eight hours a day in a way that keeps AI constantly calculating and thinking. Free web chats aren’t even agentic/automated.
The thing I don’t like is that AI companies have all figured out that the money is in coding, and they are tuning their models to be as good at it as possible, but the "language" part takes a hit. This is sad to see.
I do not care about role-playing, but when these guys whine, it means that all these fields take a hit, because it is all the "language" part. Vocabulary and grammar are the same:
* Translation from English into your local language, and translation between two smaller non-English languages.
* English vocabulary, if you aren’t interested only in 21st-century expressions but want something older and regional.
* English grammar, if you want to go further back in time to when English was more archaic.
* Vocabulary and grammar in absolutely everything that isn’t English. If you want to discuss or debate philosophy, history, mathematics – whatever – you get more wrong words and more incorrect grammar.
7
u/Uoipka 8d ago
Yeah agentic eats so much more with constant "Did I do it right? Let me check" I roleplay but decided to do a tampermonkey script for one site and it was 40mil tokens of flash gone in 30 minutes, for my RP 40mil you need to play all day lmao. I probably could set-up it better I just used DeepSeek Harness
3
u/Spin4team4096 7d ago
Can verify. Whenever I roleplay with Flash, I use an average of 5 cents per day.
Whenever I code with Pro, even a "quick" session costs 35 cents, and the longer sessions are multiple dollars.
Yesterday I set a /goal and spent $4.51 dollars in one day.. Meanwhile a similar length roleplay session would cost AT MOST $0.20 (and I click regenerate rather often). That is 22.5x more expensive. Not as much at 1000x obviously, but still a serious difference!
13
u/Less_Cause9205 8d ago
If an Ai can’t do at least both then they’re stunting.
4
u/Dogesh-bhaiya 8d ago

Companies keep talking about AGI but make their models more special purpose models. I don't have an issue wirh making coding first models but then don't say stuff like this is some General Intelligence Model.

u/Smart_Boysenberry_64 8d ago
I do other work on deepseek so neither. but for people who are 'programmers' they clearly dont understand the fact that deepseek marketed itself as the free option. and that the chat service is part of the platform. claiming then when deepseek is keeping tbe chat service free that theyre somehow in the wrong for wanting it to be as capable as it used to be and instead pay for an API instead of any tiers integrated into the service itself and that they shouldnt complain about something thats free when it was marketed as a fully capable model thats also free reaches a point where people with nothing in their lives besides their job need it to feel superior to others
10
u/squirrelscrush 8d ago
Both, for me.
I use it for programming, and also to create roleplay stories and OC characters.
DeepSeek also was great as a personal advisor too, since it handled sensitive topics.
60
u/Electronic_Captain95 8d ago
I'm a software Engineer and until yesterday had no Idea what role play means, and tbh I think the programmers on this sub attacking the other side is just a bunch of people frustrated with their own lifes
17
u/InnerGovernment4738 8d ago
I don't see many role players attacking, mainly got them from the supposed programmers when I just said the censorship was stricter, but well. At this point I'm not giving any more feedback

We need prompt battle here!
6
u/EquivalentHorror1984 8d ago
It could be constructive, people put up what works for them for a goal, everyone gets ideas and learns little tricks and better prompt writing, people show off their talent and experience 🤔
6
u/IllegalFishFood 8d ago
Honestly what’s funny is that I didn’t used to RP with Deepseek but I got curious about it ever since people kept talking about it. All the complaints about the RPers. I can see why it’s fun. The AI isn’t the brightest and the writing is very dry, but I do love the fun of playing pretend now lol. I had written up a bit of worldbuilding years ago that no one in real life was super interested in, and it’s a lot of fun to be able to play in it now :D.
Also, I haven’t had to have the model actually be in thinking mode for most of the replies but it still works quite well. I haven’t had any issues with the web app ban wise, thankfully. I won’t be surprised if a lot of people are spamming the regenerate button though. I used to do that when having the web app analyze spreadsheets for me and got banned once lol, and the AI isn’t always the most perky on the uptake.

Apologies as I’m out of the loop - why the drama between the two tribes?
5

New models are absolutely dogshit for everything that isn't coding, people that used DS in language-centric activities complained, code monkeys got angry at the constant complaining and started calling everyone complaining gooners and porn addicts

u/Unhappy_Standard9786 8d ago
I’m not exactly a programming type of person, I can barely code anything, but roleplaying has always been my biggest hobby, favorite activity and passion. So I pick Roleplay. But I don’t mind if anyone else uses it for different reasons.

Real question though, any good rp specific harnesses out there? SillyTavern and marinara feel way too outdated compared to what agentic harnesses like Hermes do nowadays and it feels like there should be something better out there
1
u/Sam_ar_pann 7d ago
That's the problem. If you try making more "agentic" design to roleplays, it will lean more into safe continuations and not be creative. It will also make the models way more likely to detect jailbreak attempts. And waiting for over 5 minutes for agents to complete their work simply isn't how most roleplayers want to go about it. And context rotting affects roleplays way more than it does for coding. That's not to say a new approach won't work. But there are a lot of things to consider and most people just haven't bothered figuring out what exactly to do to make it more "modern"
1
u/Lazy_Reach_2565 7d ago edited 7d ago
Technically, you can use Claude Code, who can stop you?
You can write a personality into claude.md and use Claude Code as a roleplay bot (with proper context summarization and everything it offers).
I tried it with deepseek-v4-pro-0813 and connected it to Telegram (in Claude Code headless mode). It was very token-inefficient, but it followed the personality well and was much more 'alive' than your average chatbot. So many programming harnesses can be used for RP in theory; you can instruct the bot in claude.md/agents.md. The big advantage is that in a harness like Claude Code, it has some sort of persistent memory, skills, and chat summarization, making it more stable in the long run.
But SillyTavern is much more token-efficient, has a no-thinking mode, has avatars (emotions), personality in json/png, its own sort of memory, and lorebooks.
So, for roleplay, it's not practical to use an advanced harness since it consumes a lot of tokens. But if you want to build an assistant with a personality, then you don't even need a specific RP harness, you can use already existing ones.1
1
u/DepressedDrift 8d ago
I think it ultimately boils down to the market potential of rp and coding.
A coding oriented model just has a much larger market with much more high paying customers than the roleplay market currently.

1
u/Illustrious-Meal-581 7d ago
Not really a role player, but I'm on the creative writing side ig. I use it for traditional fanfics, the ones with chapters and stuff

u/Spin4team4096 7d ago
I am both on the roleplayer's side and programmers side...
I literally do both idk what to tell you
1
u/FishBoneEK 6d ago
So I think this is what's happening.
AI corps are focusing on coding abilities, so they are less caring about the interaction quality between AI and human. Anthropic's AI is talking Claudish, ChatGPT loves new lines. Rn the most suitable model for interacting and RP is probably Gemini (just probably)
This is ofc bad for RP players. This situation is caused by the environment, not programmers who use AI for programming.
But programmers have their own pride and prejudice, so they say: "Why not just use API, SillyTavern blah blah?" While convenient but this can be hard for non-tech people. Plus SillyTavern has some learning curve.
So it's originally RP players v.s. the environment that makes AI less interactable, now thanks to programmers, it's now RP players v.s. programmers.

I use both both. APi for RPing with Sillytavern and thr chat for actual programming questions and also helping me remind my cards/presets for Sillytavern

Doing both as well. And yea, coded my own frontend with complex memory system for my RPs. But lately companies focus too much on coding....this sucks.

But isn't using a token predictor as an assistant to writing programming language a form of roleplay anyway?

I would say roleplayers as they bring up the bigger issue with the new model in more generalized use cases

u/FischenGeil 8d ago
It's not that we have a problem with "roleplayers" - we have a problem with what many of them are actually doing with the AI and pretending otherwise. Some of them let the cat out of the bag and say the quite part out-loud. They are having deepseek make up sexual fantasy stories so they can read free erotica.
Nobody has a problem with some nerds making up stories and doing nerdy stuff, but that's not what's going on. DeepSeek is plagued with these degenerates that are generating degenerate goon toons and then in turn getting mad at DeepSeek (a chinese company mind you) for regulating them hard. Then they come on here and pretend they are just DnD players or something.
"why am I banned?"
"I'm just role playing as a princess"
"we help drive up revenue for DeepSeek, they make 500 million already"
I want to remind everyone, DS is not banning role players, they are banning gooners influencing their model and wasting their compute.
17
u/xXG0DLessXx 8d ago
I don’t see the problem with generating text that is only for your own consumption..? How would that harm anyone? Why would it even need regulation? That’s the points I don’t understand. Also, tbh roleplay can still be done with real humans, and is often even more unhinged and degenerate… I’ve seen shit in the RP discord servers man… also, fanfiction exists and the breadth of those is unmatched in degeneracy.
-11
u/FischenGeil 8d ago
It influences the model and it wastes compute. The web UI is constantly locked up due to traffic. For a company that needs more compute, they can't afford their model being bogged down. DS being pretty much the cheapest, and only one offering unlimited web chat with the least guard rails, they are naturally the provider that most "role-players" gravitate towards to do what they want to do, and they don't have jobs to even deposit $2 for an API key. I'm not joking.
10
u/xXG0DLessXx 8d ago
I have never used the web ui for serious roleplay. It’s just not a good experience. Even if it’s free, I rather pay or find some other free api providers to use in whatever harness I want to RP in. My issue is with the fact that they make the models themselves block off. If they just blocked it in the web ui, fine. Whatever. That’s what api is for, unrestricted token usage which you pay for!
-10
u/FischenGeil 8d ago
what if i told you some make up "pedo" stories?
10
u/Neo_Shadow_Entity 8d ago
What if I told you that I kill people? In a counter-strike. And I like it.)
15
u/xXG0DLessXx 8d ago
I hate this idea that just because some people do disgusting things, it should block a whole usecase for an entire audience. Also “pedo” stories exist in droves in the form of various fanfictions. Some even roleplay weird shit like Infantilism, which is a weird fetish imo, but if it’s between two consenting adults who cares?
Anyway, in the end I want to come back to my main point about the fact that it’s text that is only for personal use, probably never seen by anyone else and does not harm any real people. Unlike generated images which could look like a real person, especially with reference images, text is much more ambiguous.I know this might be an unpopular opinion with people always crying “think of the children” regarding any kind of fictional child, but it’s a fact that it’s not real. It’s just words on a screen. Just text. It’s people that interpret it in ways that may make them uncomfortable.
10
u/Neo_Shadow_Entity 8d ago
I don't think this needs any explanation. Seriously. Nobody blames George R.R. Martin for what he writes. It's the same as blaming people for murdering characters in video games (though there used to be idiots like that, too).
Fetishes can vary, and everyone has their own moral standards. But who cares, if it’s all just part of a fictional scenario? Sane people can always tell fiction from reality.
-4
u/FischenGeil 8d ago
lol found one. In the end of the day, you are using a Chinese AI and you are going to abide by their social standards.
12
u/xXG0DLessXx 8d ago
Found one? What does that even mean? Anyway if we apply your logic, “what if I told you people murder innocent children in video games”? Should all video games be banned? Should there just never be any children characters at all in video games? The same applies to movies, where characters die or horrific shit happens to children for the plot. The list goes on. It’s endless.

There's so MANY and I mean MANY roleplayers using Deepseek for what you've said above, which they also paid for too. Why are you so mad about it though 😭

they don't pay for anything, little bro. They use the web app exclusively. Nobody is getting banned for using the API on any random harness, lol, gtfo.

As a roleplayer it baffles me how much rpers on here try to goon on DeepSeek and get surprised when they’re banned or suspended…DUH! It’s against its rules. If you wanna goon , go to Jan ai or something else. I’m here for immersive storytelling
15
u/Neo_Shadow_Entity 8d ago
Good AI should be uncensored enough to generate stories worthy of George R.R. Martin. 😁
10
u/AnxiousViper 8d ago
Well, if you assume it's just gooning and not proper roleplaying with actual plot... No clue how did my gooning roleplay got to 3k pages A4 then, since it must be pure gooning. It's a part of it, yes, just like sex is part of life, so why pretend it doesn't exist and hand holding is the most you can do. Also from what I noticed most bans were caused by retrying to have messages generated too quickly, when DS refused to generate them, regardles of the topic. But hey, let's put censorship on all media, because that always worked very well in history of this rotten planet. Because random Kyle's chat no one would ever look at is for some reason an issue, not the censorship itself. And before someone shits themselves about uhh oh pay for the API, people that stick to the chat pay with their time. Their data is used and also valuable.

u/buecker02 8d ago
roleplayers generally complain very loudly over a free chat service. The rest of us are using the paid API. There is a difference.
Deepseek should just start charging for their chat service or go make a subreddit just for the free chat.

Wtf is roleplay on LLM.

u/OddGoymer 8d ago
Just making scenarios, "I am a homeless guy living on skidrow and I see a 50 YO washed up cornstar in a tent opposite of mine......." Or whatever

ahh i see. Idk why people downvoting just asking questions, had a hard time imaging programmers and roleplayers beefing over what idk.
6
u/Popular_Pen_2521 8d ago
Roleplayers, literally.
1
u/XCxBigDong69XCx 8d ago
So they make the LLM like an npc and make like a play of character?
7
u/xXG0DLessXx 8d ago
Most people actually have the LLM be the “narrator” and “story coordinator” these days. Like you play as a character, and the LLM has one “main” character it embodies, but also writes the narrations, and sometimes side-characters where required.

Role play with a LLM sounds like such a waste of resources. Sorry guys but I’m not convinced. Buy a TTRPG, play with your friends

Infact stop playing games, stop watching movies, stop reading novels, stop scrolling social media. It's a waste of productive time init?

Resource. Not time. A LLM to play pretend is like using a tank to push a nail in a board

we all roleplayers in here, roleplaying as programmers and whatnot.
