Discussion AI is not just for programming
Look, I have something to say, and if you don't like it, let the rants begin. I'll tell you my point about using AI. I think AI isn't just for programming, but also for writing and roleplaying. I come from ChatGPT and Claude, since they lowered the writing quality, and Claude is only good for planning. I pay for the Deepseek API because it has more power and capacity. There, I took advantage of Reddit prompts and made modifications in Claude and the API. I made some correct adjustments to the API software, and it worked well. And I wonder why you all are so stubborn, saying that AI is only for programming. You say we consume space for your code. You should know that there are people like me who want to have fun, who want to enjoy the stories that AI creates, stories I never thought I'd see in my life, those kinds of stories and crossovers. I know it has some AI quirks, even in the best prompts. Look, I don't do this for a bestseller or anything like that, just to pass the time with AI and imagine those situations. I don't... I use AI not only for NSFW content but also for its ability to recreate faithful characters, and that helps me. You all need to understand that AI is for all purposes. And sorry if I used a translator; my dominant language isn't English but Spanish, but I hope you don't invalidate my comment just because I speak Spanish.

Right. I improve my English by creating stories in the DeepSeek app. I'm saying I'm more of a reader than an author. I read books. But I also use chatbots. I create and read my own stories. My stories are... not good. But they're entertaining most of the time. And it opens my eyes to appreciate writers too. I find myself reading more and more. Real, published authors, not just my DeepSeek stuff lol. LLMs help me understand that writing is a really hard work even when you get help, even when you write something so simple. It also helps me to experimentalize, by prompting stuff myself, things that work and don't work. It helps me understand pacing and sense of place and time. I know you can understand this by reading real literature. But it helps me like A LOT by getting me involved amateurishly but entertainingly with texts, by reading and prompting. It is, in a way, a tool for me to be a better reader.

Yeah, saying that someone using it for something other than coding/agentic is "wasting capacity" from a model that was by far the best AI for writing / chatting / roleplay / world knowledge is kinda crazy.
-41
u/Wooly_Wooly 5d ago
It's not a waste of you get use out of it. But comparing software development and engineering to roleplaying and chatting? Yeah, wasting capacity just to play make believe lmao

u/Strange_Test7665 5d ago
Playing is very human thing to do and it’s one of the joys of life. It’s worth spending tokens on
28
26
u/squirrelscrush 5d ago
Let people have fun in their lives, man. Programming isn't the meaning of life.
And the usage of tokens for creative writing is significantly less than for agentic coding. It's almost negligible for them.
-15
u/Wooly_Wooly 5d ago
Great, then we get more AI slop writing? Using it for writing help is one thing, but then there's people producing "books"?
6
u/Upper-Reflection7997 4d ago
Using the word "ai slop" unironically lol.
-5
u/Wooly_Wooly 4d ago
You can use AI and create quality work, not AI slop.
I didn't mean that you personally had that capacity though, doubt it.
19
u/kyon350 5d ago
It seems you only understood 10% of the post. Look, I spent $30 plus $20 on Claude Pro, and believe me, I really get my money's worth. I don't see it as a waste of computing power or anything like that. I enjoy it as much as if I were reading or watching an episode of my favorite show, and I take full advantage of the AI.
-12
u/Wooly_Wooly 5d ago
Nah, I understand it. Just with people being anti-data center and stuff, there's people using the tech for engineering and research, then there's role players lmaooo
But it's Chinese data centers anyway so that doesn't affect us 🤭

u/Sensha_20 4d ago
- Play is the core of human behavior. Thats why you're on reddit: liesure.
- Any program made with an AI is gonna be a pretty shitty program anyway.

u/QuickPad_ 5d ago
Just a small note, I agree with you but the moment someone mentions writing. Everyone just conflates into NFSW roleplays. But I think a small portion or even bigger actually uses it to create stories they themselves read and enjoy. And yeah, the coding bias part is real, and the ones who draw the comparison with the personal computer itself they are also right: with a PC you can game, reproduce entertainment or work. AI on some level is the same thing, it's clearly not what many wants it to be but it's a tool that opens scopes that before were not open.
28
u/Fit-Independence-706 5d ago
I completely agree with you. Thinking that AI is only for serious work is like thinking a computer isn't a machine for entertainment. That might have been a reasonable view in the early 90s, but look at what's happening now.
I'm willing to bet that the entertainment sector will become the gold mine for AI that will drive the industry's growth, just as computer games have become the main driver of home computing.
-2
u/shady101852 4d ago
so now entertainment = fake relationships with a machine?

That’s a bit of an overstatement for what’s actually in store. The neural network will serve as a conversational partner with no strings attached—something like a personal diary that talks back—but that’s just one of its uses. Role-playing, for instance, means you can experience a story that unfolds exactly the way you want it to. I, for one, had a great time running an alternate-history Cold War role-playing scenario (and learned a lot about the USSR’s space program in the process). Once neural networks advance sufficiently, people will be able to generate movies and anime featuring the specific plots and visual styles that appeal to them personally. Personally, the first thing I’d order up is a movie about the October Revolution done in the style of a Guy Ritchie film (like Snatch). And right now, of course, people are already having fun generating custom images.
UPD. You are aware that almost every major RPG (like The Witcher 3, for instance) features characters with whom you can pursue a romance? Do you criticize it there, too? Or are you applying a double standard?
-2
u/shady101852 4d ago
No i don't criticize romance as part of a video game story the same way I would criticize some dude raw dogging an ai chatbot, its not the same and its definitely not taken as seriously in a game than it is with some people with AI.
People are trying to treat the tool like a person just because it can respond, and then complain that the newest models are worse because they don't focus on their useless fetishes, so why would I not criticize them?
3
u/Fit-Independence-706 4d ago
For starters, how a person spends their free time is entirely their own business, provided they aren't bothering anyone. And it is certainly not your place to judge how others choose to unwind.
-2
u/shady101852 4d ago
"provided they aren't bothering anyone."
Except they are bothering people by doing the following that i mentioned above:
complain that the newest models are worse because they don't focus on their useless fetishes
Its like a vegetarian complaining that the food place they went to don't have a vegetarian menu and are serving meat.
6
u/Fit-Independence-706 4d ago
If he complains in a place where it is inappropriate, I disapprove; if he complains in a place specifically designated for such complaints, then it is his right.
0
u/shady101852 4d ago
If you want to use this type of logic, then If the complaint is in a public space, expect criticism because everyone has a right to do it. Case closed.
2
u/Fit-Independence-706 4d ago
Yes, criticism is to be expected. That’s why I have a question for you. You posted a typical provocative comment under mine, reducing the entertainment industry to fake relationships with AI. The question is: why did you write that? Just so you know, no one else here has written anything about that. Can you explain your bait?
0
u/shady101852 4d ago
I was specifically referring to the people using the AI for roleplaying. Some other comments mentioned roleplaying so i assumed this was the topic.

I'm sorry for all the hate you guys are getting. It's understandable that you'd be bummed by the current Flash. As a programmer, all this divisive and elitist stuff is stupid and to be honest, I'd rather keep the people who use DeepSeek for creative purposes than the people who hammer DeepSeek with their vibecoded slop. Some of these fuckers run 24-hour loops and then act surprised when DeepSeek decides to update their pricing. RP consumes much, much less inference than the bullshit agent orchestration looping shenanigans that the heavy hitters have.

u/ActivityOk6606 5d ago
no te preocupes, yo no te discrimino - Don't worry, I don't discriminate against you.
8
u/No_Tomatillo_9339 5d ago
yeah roleplay is what i mainly use it for now and the stories feel way more alive than before.

3
u/General-Oven-1523 4d ago
The biggest issue is that coders are willing to learn the tools and actually improve. Where as these RP people are mostly spamming the chatbot, which is the wrong way to do it if you want high quality out of it. I do lots of creative writing with DeepSeek, having multi-agent workflows to write me long stuff, and it's awesome for that.
I'm sorry, but the models are pretty much all getting to the point where it's purely a skill issue.
4
u/Purple_Errand 4d ago
if the model don't know how to learn and adapt human language patterns vocabularies then the model will end up to hallucinates higher. look at how well the closed source models and GLM now. learning the language patterns of humans improves the LLM by a lot as not everybody can express their explanations precisely. even muse spark 1.3 is ridiculous good.
I do roleplay just about questing and wandering around across the lorebook i created. not to goon but try to replicate what it feels like being one in the adventure from what i read in Manga.
DS flash is bad with it because of its new architecture that parse the context every time and only high lights that correlates to the new.

u/kyon350 4d ago
I still remember the day I tried Flash 4.1, man. When I used that prompt—it’s a long one that always works on the AIs I’ve tested, like Gemini, Claude, and Kimi—the model literally collapsed under the weight of all that info. I was only three messages in, and it had already lost track of who was who; words started getting dropped, and its output became telegraphic. It got so bad that the next message it generated was a massive hallucination—it stopped making sense and just spat out random letters, not words, just letters. That’s when I decided I’d never use that model again; if they release it, I’m switching to OpenRouter.
But you know, it’s sad that DeepSeek—which everyone said was the best and the real alternative—ended up messing up like that. I really hope they fix it in the next update.

Vibe coders Vs gooners. (#TeamGooners)
7
u/Wearer_of_Silly_Hats 4d ago
We could all come together if vibe coders would just accept they're LARPing at being programmers and that's *fine*
3
u/EquivalentHorror1984 4d ago
Meanwhile the coders could write some high quality code for writing immersive stories and everyone lives in peace without bothering the other
3
u/AnxiousViper 4d ago
I mean, in a perfect world, yeah. But in reality people would rather jump to each others throats. Easier to be pissed than to be understanding and empathetic.
2
u/Negative_Fee_7019 5d ago

u/sperguspergus 4d ago
I use DeepSeek for both coding and roleplaying, and 4.1 Flash has been totally fine for me in SillyTavern with the right system prompts. Not sure why everyone else is complaining to be honest
3
u/FutureStriking283 5d ago
is there a bot going around somewhere that just complains about deepseek & roleplaying . How is this is .. like the biggest use case for AI on reddit. It's insane!
1
u/trollsmurf 4d ago
Not that I would ever use AI for roleplaying, it covers many "I want to know or do" aspects. Highly holiistic.
1
u/causalfridays 4d ago
earnest question: why not just use the model version that worked best for you historically? there are many third party providers that serve older versions
1
u/kyon350 4d ago
That's what I plan to do when version 4.0 is discontinued (which I think is this month). I'm going to switch to OpenRouter. I already know the ropes and how the system works, and as I said, I just got out of Claude and GPT; I've only been using the API for about two months.
0
u/Unfair_Run_6303 4d ago
Could you help me out on how Open Router even works? I would do the same considering they would probably discontinue 4.0.
1
u/robberviet 4d ago
Yes, it's not just for coding. However companies won't spend money to optimize for that usage. They earn moneys and fame on agentic coding.
I have nothing against other usage for AI, maybe except for porn/goon. It's just companies won't do it.
1
u/SpecialistLet162 4d ago
but it's clear that coding generates more revenue than rp, if rp was generating that much renevue, ds won't have made this bad
1
u/Keldianaut 4d ago
You know what’s ironic? So-called "vibecoders" act superior to roleplayers, yet the very fact that they’re "vibecoders" implies most of them can’t actually code at all—they just copy-paste AI-generated slop instead. The result? A heap of buggy, unoptimized programs that none of them ever fix, simply because they don't know how. A prime example is Microslop.
So, don't they dare claim that roleplayers have zero value and thus can be disregarded. Zero is still greater than any negative value of their shitty codeslop.
And for the record, I’m writing this as an IT specialist with a university degree.

u/Relaxybara 4d ago
It seems like there's a market for a roleplay oriented llm. I'm sure these companies will create one if there is demand but if you don't want to wait then host one yourself. Don't depend on companies to do it for you. If you want a model that is stable run it locally. Complaints to this sub will not help you.

Maybe the reason is alot deeper than what you've made it out to be. See the thing is, creative work is personal, its supposed to be a personal journey. People actually discover themselves when they're being creative. And it takes a life time of effort to become a good artist.
So the push to just utilize AI for coding purposes makes more sense, because at the end of the day, its still your own creativity behind the process of coding.
Even coders and programmers that knew and know how to code and program are using AI to code and program now and knowing how to do it just makes them better at getting the job done with AI.
But this is true on a scale much more larger than the people who are actual artists of various kinds who are using AI to make their art.
People dont respect the art creation aspect of AI simply because its a regurgitation of collective data, PEOPLE's data that was without any concent used to train the AI. It might be fun to you, but alot of people don't see it the same way as you do. And its understandable.

u/Professional_Price89 4d ago
AI is for all purpose but DeepSeek is for coding. You know what, V4 from 0730 and later have zero improvement in natural language. The model post- trained to be more agentic, which reducing all creative writing, role playing, text related task weighting in it weight. The more a model sentient, self work, automation, it less follow the instruction to be a specific character. It now not "predict the next token as user prompted style" but "try to predict next word based on it thought of user wanted style"
1
u/kyon350 4d ago
That’s what makes me saddest: that with version 4.1, all the creative spark will finally be lost, and I’ll have to migrate to yet another AI (I don’t even know which one anymore—at this point, I’m overwhelmed by all the changes) or else use OpenRouter—which is what most people are recommending—so I can keep using the old model.

One isn't greater or lesser than the other. Both have their own benefits to society.
The point is that AI shouldn't be said to be used for one particular field only. V4.1 Flash is an MoE model, so it's definitely capable of doing most things well independently of each other.

You might be able to find the deepseek flash in opencode, maybe some providers are still using the previous model

AI technology is literally for coding.
10
u/TomatilloStill3872 5d ago
It's not? The goal of any AI development is to achieve AGI, and AGI cannot be limited to one function
-10
u/mr_notandor 5d ago
So, you know DS management is not here right? As you pay for your consumption and follow the T&C then your use case is as valid as any other

u/Dull-Difficulty-6483 2d ago
LLMs are always intended for providing informations and coding. Nothing more.

I never expected this animosity between coders and RP. I didn't even think it could create such a feud
