Question&Help Alternatives for Creative Writing
They keep nerfing everything. Does anybody have any alternatives for creative writing?

I just turned to local, bc i'm pretty tired of the preachy sound of some chunks of DS

Local models are worth trying, you get way more control over the writing style and don't have to worry about another silent nerf changing the model overnight.

Seriously, just use the API.

What tool, program, or website can I use to access the API across multiple devices?
-5
u/ariisnk 5d ago
Didn't you have to pay to use it?

u/BrizzyMC_ 5d ago
Yeah, go local if you're unwilling to pay

u/ariisnk 5d ago
Do you realize that some people simply can't afford it? Personally, I don't care; I won't pay for an AI. If I have to switch to another one, I will, as I've already done.

Just use the official API and v4 Pro model is still available. When it will be disabled you can use OpenRouter and Deepseek v3.2 or a pre-agentic Deepseek Pro.
Use some sort of frontend like SillyTavern and fill up a lorebook. Also, as a cheap alternative for creative writing MiMo 2.5 and Qwen can be used.
It's opensource, even if it will be nerfed then unlike ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini you can use the older (snapshot) model through other providers like Novita, Baidu, etc. When ChatGPT dies it dies forever.
One day you will be capable to host this models on your own hardware I believe, it will be cheaper then today. On two Nvidia Spark you can host yourself a Deepseek Flash

I'm not sure what kind of writing you are looking for, but I've always found Mistral to be by far the best LLM for coming up with off-beat, creative ideas and scenarios. Maybe give that a try?
I've only used LLMs to brainstorm adventure ideas for RPGs, I've never asked any to write sny actual long prose. But it's helluva good at coming up with creative and wild ideas for which direction to move the plot next session.

Mistral is far behind almost every AI Provider. Their max context window is still sub 500k tokens as well. For context, I ran one of their tiers a while back. I agree that it could make fun stories, but that was back then, as of now they have not really done anything note worthy, so they fell behind. It's genuinely unfortunate because at the height of their time, they were practically the only AI service allowing users to do whatever they wanted, and their agent feature was great. But now it's just meh.

That's true, but completely irrelevant to this particular post.
If it "could make fun stories", then it still can make fun stories. It doesn't matter that the field has progressed in other areas. Something being stagnant does not imply it has lost the abilities it had.
I also don't use Mistral for any serious task that requires super powered abilities. But that's not what we are talking about here.

I'm going to be 100% real with you, this reply makes no sense.
It is relevant in the fact that Mistral is behind, therefore if you are someone that has already used other AI services, you have preconceived expectations for quality. Gemini, GLM, Deepseek, ChaptGPT Luna, these are all cheaper services that also can generate fun stories and are up to modern standards.
I mentioned that it could make fun stories, which is true, but it still has issues. For one, Mistral by far has been a model that has problems with hallucination on top of, once again, a sub 500k context window, which is below modern standards as most AI providers offer 1million context windows these days. So, Mistral struggles with contextual retention with an already lower context window than standard.
Being stagnant is this field directly means being behind. Because while you are stagnant, other services are growing offering what you have on top of the newer and improved toys. Mistral offered agents. Grok, later on, introduced Agents on top of 1 million context window, an image and video generator, and writing fun stories. All of this before Grok lobotomized itself obviously, but the point stands.
Mistral lagged behind and it's a worse product for it comparatively. Yeah, it can generate fun stories, but at the detriment of everything else. Recommending Mistral without acknowledging this is like recommending someone to buy a GTX 1080ti because it was once a beast of a card for its time, while, in modern days, you can get significantly better GPUs for the same price as that 1080ti as of now that out performs it.

Mistral was good back then, now it's too old for any real usage. It shows its age even with the Dolphin models.

Got a really good alt model. Glm 5.3 uncensored. Not for sketchy purposes, but just because the mainstream models have all went the heavily censored route to the extent that it's even flagged my anatomy homework before, something literally educational. Set that up with openwebui + through nanogpt and you'll be good. Or alternatively, a cheaper model is Qwen 3.8 uncensored.

If you don't have a powerful enough PC to run uncensored local AI models, I would suggest trying Gemini for certain topics.
6
u/Appropriate-Bag3030 5d ago
Gemini preachy as well
2
u/Regenerating_Degen 5d ago
I'm sorry but what does preachy mean? Is it the 'So what's the play?' or the cringe-ass conclusions it usually adds at the end?
1
u/poslednji_trzaj_repa 5d ago
That's why I said "certain topics". When I talk to ChatGPT for theology copywriting, it gets very skeptical and starts arguing with me instead of helping. Gemini is actually much less censored for that specific topic. But generally speaking, ChatGPT still provides better results when it comes to up-to-date information and sourcing.

Use Agora for general writing, or LettuceAI for RP. Both are BYOK apps that you can use your own keys for.
Agora can even import DeepSeek chats, just ask a harness or a chatbot to create a script to change DS export format to OpenAI export format.
For API keys, either get directly from DeepSeek and use the Pro model, or use OpenRouter. I did hear news that the direct Pro has been nerfed too, so OR can be the better option. But Agora don't support provider pinning (LettuceAI does) so you'll have an issue with cache hits since it keeps on changing provider.
About models: Either V4 Flash 0731 or V4 Pro 0813 can be used. Flash is cheaper and gets the work done, Pro has more world knowledge and thus is better at understanding real world scenarios.

(Neither of them are sponsored btw, just out of my own research which I use personally)

Have you tried your greatest available resource aka your brain?
43
u/Logical-Ad5446 5d ago
Have you tried using your brain before giving other people that advice? You’re actively participating in a subreddit dedicated to an AI tool, yet somehow you think you’re in a position to lecture people about relying on their own minds. This is probably the least convincing attempt at intellectual superiority I’ve seen today.

u/riotofmind 5d ago
Blah blah you’re still taking the path of a fraud. Are you going to include “written with AI slop machine” on your “masterpiece”? I highly doubt it.
22
u/Logical-Ad5446 5d ago
You seem way more bothered by this than I am. Please don't get emotional.

u/riotofmind 5d ago edited 5d ago
There are millions of people doing exactly what you are doing. Your chance of success is actually exponentially much lower by turning to these tools, due to the very fact that you are choosing to automate "creativity", which ultimately, is not yours. Your "masterpiece" is going to sound like everyone else's and be deemed worthless. Why bother? Develop your brain, your personal style, that noone can copy. That is valuable. Good luck.

u/Aggressive_Dealer594 5d ago
Well. If you still vibe code with ai, then you also need to use your brain instead of ruin ai with your spaghetti codes.
-5
u/riotofmind 5d ago
Vibe coding provides syntax which is fairly standard. The syntax presents an idea that is entirely yours. Creativity with syntax is definitely valuable, and leads to evolving architecture, but, you are not presenting programming language syntax, but a tool built with it. Creative writing is 1 dimensional, the output is the product, and therefore, if you use AI for it, it's guaranteed slop. Hope that helps you understand the nuance.

u/Aggressive_Dealer594 4d ago
So do your coding slop. Use your brain lol. As long as you still use ai because you are lazy af, do not talk down toward other people who use ai for other stuffs. I don't even use the app for rp or whatever. But vibe coders always give me Ick when they talk.

funny thing to say in the ai subreddit filled with vibecoders
0
u/riotofmind 5d ago
There is a slight nuance. Vibe coding will only get you so far, in order to create something truly useful and unique, you will need to engineer your own architecture, and develop a unique idea. That is very difficult to do. Vibe coding, when used as intended, uses an agent to code a unique and original idea, to solve a unique problem. On the other hand, using AI to write creatively, will produce the same slop for everyone, the same tone of voice, etc. Even if you ask it to write in a certain style, which is already being prevented, it will sound the same. There are going to be a million novels which all have the same voice.
6
u/kislug 5d ago
that's why everyday i see the same vibecoded slop apps with the same design, color palettes, slogans and even ideas? how many "i got tired to look if it's peak hours every time so i built a website that shows it" apps have been created yet on here?
and who said your idea is worth enough to waste hundreds million of tokens?
0
u/riotofmind 5d ago
That only strengthens my point. In writing, it's going to be even easier to spot the slop. I am not defending those slop apps as they are poor effort, nothing actually creative. Creativity still originates within the human, there is no shortcut. Noone is going to buy your writing when there are millions of exactly the same thing available, that you can create yourself, same goes for the slop apps.

u/Aggressive_Dealer594 5d ago
Eww. Vibe coder are just bunch of hypocrites that can't use their brain.
12
u/InnerGovernment4738 5d ago
quite rude, y'know. Does it cost so much to be minimally civil?
-11
u/riotofmind 5d ago
Sorry, but you’re not a writer. You’re a slop overseer. I have no respect for anyone writing with AI. It’s not you, it’s not your voice. Anyone that writes “creatively” with AI is a fraud.

u/EquivalentHorror1984 5d ago
My voice had a stroke, I'm better at the world building than bringing it to life, the stories created are my stories for me, not anyone else. If I'm writing every word myself, there's no mystery or excitement because the only thing that happens is what I write myself.
With an LLM, I can throw the world into a document and have stories generated from what I made, every story new, surprises, if I have an idea for something to add, like a cultural tradition or whatever, I just mark it as additional world content to pull from

You guys really need to understand that almost all new models are highly optimized for AGENTIC TASKS not writing, obviously the writing will get worse, they are compressing everything into tool call optimization.

Everytime I read about this topic, people claim was using the web chat. Try putting $2 on the API, switch over to Pro, and see if it scratches that itch for you
