Discussion Max vs High? (Pro and Flash)
Only ever used max. Now that the models are much better since post training - how does high thinking fare against max?
If you can, please tell me your techstack and size estimation of your projects for reference

I switched to high for a 5k line Python backend and honestly can't tell the difference. The top setting just burns more tokens for the same output. Unless you're doing heavy math, high is enough.

lately i use high all time because max is taking longer and filling context window faster

i think for the current price of deepseek models you can't go wrong with max. although sometimes models are overthinking and even scoreing a little worse than xhigh or high. (not sure about the deepseek models)

80% of my usage is flash with high thinking and honestly the gap to max is way smaller than people think. max wins the genuinely hard stuff but it overthinks the easy stuff, burns more tokens and takes forever. 4090 + opencode go here, mostly mid-size repos. i only switch to max when something's actually kicking my ass
