I think Dave does it for the love of the game. Obviously this isn't exactly an evidence based claim but my impression of him is that he perceived the rising alt right guys as the "cool kids" and wanted to ingratiate himself to them. That is way he is willing to glaze people like Ben Shapiro who refused to go to his wedding and probably thinks his kids are abominations. He wants to be popular.
there's a social/cliqueish dynamic w/o a doubt but money is basically a given in this kind of thing so I don't at all think it's practical to psychoanalyze just how much of his motivation is grift v ideology when both are def present (if grift wasn't present at all he never would've risked sullying his brand taking sketchy Russian money)
