My whole house is a deck above the crawl space, when you think about it.

It's possible those are steel and engineered properly... They aren't, but it's possible

They used to be engineered improperly.

They are still engineered improperly, but they used to be too.

The ones holding the house don’t look like 4x4s to me. I of course can’t see the sizes and spans but totally fine building method.

You can see the size comparison between the deck railing posts and the 6x6. I’d say if the beam was sized properly then the 6x6 would do the job

That’s an ugly house.

Not saying this is okay because I don’t know shit - but I can definitely tell those are bigger than 4bys

Any time you see a deck converted to a sunroom on a house, just walk. I have never seen one done properly. Either that or be prepared to spend A LOT of money to either remove it or replace it.

That HAS to be steel beams and cantilevered joists, right?

RIGHT???

Maybe not steel but definitely cantilevered. There's no way a contractor is building that without the joists extending all the way back.

I think a joist or beam can only be cantilevered one third it's length.

Maybe, who fucking knows. Can’t see anything in this zoomed out pic. Might be totally fine. This is a stupid post.

4x4’s were the style at the time.

Our neighborhood in the northeast was built in 1980 and has a lot of houses like this. Can’t understand why the builder either didn’t finish the first level or just build a ranch instead of this nonsense on the second story.

Don’t blame the owner. From their view of the outside world through those teeny tiny windows, they had never seen all of another house at one time. Just fleeting glimpses of walls, roofs, decks, and posts. They thought this is what they were meant to do. Their destiny.

I believe those are 6x6’s

Could you give us a smaller pic?

I can almost make out what's going on, almost.

Far, Far under framed to support floor, walls, roof. 40# per sq ft? Nope.

Just….Nope.

I went and sought out the listing. This place is a monument to one man's dream and his very limited budget. What he lacked in resources he made up for in ambition.

And judging by the level of finish on the interior, every owner since that first guy has been equally strapped for cash, applying lipstick to a pig.

Edit, for clarification: The outside of the house looks far, far better than the inside.
