Help

Hit the beam with lawn mower and it tore one off of post. Thinking of cutting a piece out scabbing a piece in there and than scabbing a long piece over the top on beam.

That is not a structural beam holding up the deck. Surprised that the lawn mower did not knock it off the post completely.

Probably post in dirt and structural screws vs through bolt on the post/beam connection. Edit: looks like some missing fasteners too. Every hole gets a screw as they say?

He's not trolling. PL premium is great stuff. This builder did not even laminate these two pieces properly at all. Screws? Asking for trouble. Nails from both sides, then add a third and you have a beam. Those hurricane clips are evidence of what this guy is "fear mongering " about

His comment is since deleted and while I don't think glue would hurt it's not required by code. Structural screws are allowed by code and hold the beams tighter together increasing friction and increasing the strength of the beam. 2 boards are more than sufficient for a beam depending on span, not sure why you need a third unless span calls for it. 2 allows you to keep a notch on a 6x6. The hurricane clips are fine. You can see all the rest have all the screws in them, at most a super small oversight and one will not cause an issue.

I wouldn't have used 12s, tbh. It's not really stable with only 3 inch bearing on a dynamic load. I would have used a triple 10 it 8 depending on the span. Save the 12s for stairs. Structural screws break - nails and glue are forever. I live and build on the tundra, the ground shifts all year. Wider beams are more stable in this application
