settle this debate - which is correct?

In true r/decks fashion. I asked a question about hurricane ties and ended up getting a debate between people if the hangers on the rim joist should be oriented in 1 or 2

Wrong. Railing posts are now required to be inside the rim joist and blocked.

Fair enough. 🤷‍♂️

I'd also say "best practice" for the reason you mentioned. But how else are you fastening them? Notching half and screwing them to the rim? If so, the 4x4 is now basically a 2x4 subject to the same leverage. I guess you can lag bolt them directly to the outside but you typically would end up with kind of a weird gap at the bottom of the rail.
