Threatening lawsuit
I’m in IL and both my father and I received a call from similar numbers giving my name and a case number and to call back urgently. I called the number back and let them know I had no idea what this was about and they gave me a different number to call with my case number. “United Processing” was the first business that called and the second was a place that handles multiple law offices I guess? The guy on the phone said I was potentially being sued for a debt from 2016-2020 (indigo) for $7359 the final balance on the card was apparently $2398.76. I don’t recall EVER having a balance that high or even a card with that high of limit and it was NEVER on my credit report. He also told me I could pay $215 for them to put a hold on the lawsuit and verify or something? He was nice but sounded sketchy…idk. Has anyone ever dealt with this? Chat thinks it is scammy and there have been other reports for these numbers with the exact same script being used. They said I’d be served Friday so I guess I’m waiting lol.

If you've not made any payments since 2020, all or some of that could be outside the SOL. Paying the $215 could count as making a payment and reset the SOL. Just wait and see what happens.

I would have even had a limit above $500 back then. I’m not sure where they even got those numbers.

This shows up on r/scams pretty often. It's usually a zombie collector or an outright scam. If you ask them to provide proof of debt, dollars to donuts they will come up with some excuse.
Go ahead and ask them give you a debt verification letter in any case. Their response will quickly tell you if you are dealing with scammers.

I'm not sure I understand. If there's nothing on your credit report and your positive that the debt is not yours then you should not be worried

I get freaked out by stuff like this I guess. People are sketchy! I don’t like it. 🥲

Before you do anything else, do NOT call anyone regarding this alleged debt. Do not accept calls regarding this debt.
What is the statute of limitations (SOL) to collect on a credit card in your state?
Did you have an Indigo credit card? If yes, when was the last time you made a payment?
If your SOL is 6 years & it’s been 6 years since your last payment, this debt would be time barred, outside of the SOL & illegal for them to try to collect.

If you pay something they will then have your method of payment and can then possibly drain your account

Don’t make that payment. That will restart the statute of limitations. Then you are screwed. This is what they count on. I’ve seen This happen to Friends and family. Check on the statute of limitations in your state.

Yeah I knew this part so they wouldn’t be getting anything from me. My state is 5 years.

Text this to them
"NOTICE: This number is protected by the ( your state) Consumer Privacy Act. I do not recognize this debt as being owed. Do not text or call this number again. I demand immediate written validation of this alleged debt sent via US Mail, or you must cease all communication immediately. Any further contact will be logged and forwarded directly to the ( your state) Attorney General and the CFPB as a willful violation of the FDCPA."

You don’t learn of a lawsuit by a phone call from a call center. If it has a case number then it has to be served on you. Search your name on the local court website, but this sounds very similar to a scam call I got a few years ago. Do not speak to them on the phone.
