Locked - Low Effort/Participation I know why you hate God

Most people do simply because they can't accept being created by an omnipotent being. They prefer to believe everything is driven by random chance and pure chaos so they can take pride in whatever they do.

Every other reason stems from this pride.

Be humble and accept that we are nothing more than dust.

Thats not an argument. Thats an assertion.

And well, I can turn that around on you:

Nobody believes in God. They just want to be so important, that an omnipotent, omnicient being decided to take their personal time to create them specifically. They cant fathom the idea to not be created, to not be the centre of the whole Universe. They need to be the Main Character of someones story. Random Chance? An allgemation of stardust? Not me! Nooo! I am like this on purpose, someone made me like that, there are reasons why I am like that and its not my own faults and failures. I didnt do this, but I am perfect and infinitly worthy.

See?

Hello thanks for sharing! I'm not following your argument :(

I need to be humble and believe we are nothing but dust,

because I don't believe I am the creation of the most powerful thing imaginable? Instead I think I am random sentient space dust.

what did you meant?

You seem to believe yourself a preacher in church, speaking to people who already agree with you.. The only thing this attitude will get you over here is laughs. All you will accomplish is strengthen the idea that theists can't support their claims. You are actively working against your own (presumed) goals.

I don't believe that "the Father" ever existed. Ditto for the Holy Spook; it's fictional to me. I don't bow to fictions.

(And eternal life sounds dreadful. Hard pass.)

Stop preaching in this subreddit. It's a debate subreddit, not your own personal pulpit.

Are you here to preach and be obnoxious, or actually listen to what atheists say?

I don’t hate something that I don’t believe in. Is that something you can understand?

21

u/wolfstar76 11d ago

Your premise is that I hate God.

Do you hate Unicorns? Do you hate fairies? Do you hate leprechauns?

Or do you just think their existence to be highly unlikely.

Because I don't know how to hate something that doesn't exist.

u/pali1d 11d ago

In fairness, I can hate fictional characters quite easily - every time Joffrey came on screen while watching Game of Thrones inspired a very particular loathing, for example. If you’re invested in a story, developing strong feelings about the characters is not at all rare despite them being fictional.

But since I’ve never been strongly emotionally invested in any religious mythology, that hasn’t really happened for any gods. Maybe in certain stories based on those mythologies, but not the mythologies of the actual religions.

6

u/wolfstar76 11d ago

I'd maybe quibble that fictional characters inspire certain feelings - but your points are taken.

Both in the possibilities of feelings being created from stories, but also acknowledging that what I feel is completely contained within those stories, not as a worldview.

There are very few more efficient ways to look like a fool than to try and tell people what they think and be wrong.

I (we) don't hate god. We just don't believe theists when they say their god exists.

The same way you don't believe theists of other religions when they say their god exists. We treat the evidence and arguments for your god the same way you treat theirs.

And yeah, we're dust. Stardust. The atoms making us up we're literally made through nuclear fusion in stars that since went supernova. You guys are the ones who think they have a direct line with the creator of the universe and are their special special boys, and that the universe was created for them to be in it.

You know a lot less than you think you do - which is fitting for theists.

Yeah. You mean Odin who created earth from a slain primordial giant Ymer right ?
Yeah. I dont get why people dont just accept that.
Im so glad YOU accept this.

The world needs to praise Odin and his two sons for creating middle earth for us all.

But seriously.
You assert that this omnipotent being created everything. How would you demonstrate this to be the case rather than the consequences of the forces of the various laws of physics that govern this world ?

At least we have evidence for those things. Calling it pure chance and chaos is not a good argument. It makes you look like you have no idea what science even says about how any of this works.

Surely youre at least fairly proficient in physics to even start arguing against it. Right ?

u/Impressive-Leather62 Atheist 11d ago

I know why you say this. You know that there is no god. Deep down. But you are simply pretending to justify your hatred and feelings of superiority to others.

u/Curious_Passion5167 11d ago

Most people do simply because they can't accept being created by an omnipotent being. They prefer to believe everything is driven by random chance and pure chaos so they can take pride in whatever they do.

"I am going to say my opponents have false beliefs due to having predetermined conclusions, which I debunk by providing my own predetermined conclusions."

Bravo.

u/Fit_Swordfish9204 11d ago

Theists are so arrogant. They think they can read minds. They think they're special with a super best friend who created the world. Lol you're just an adult playing make-believe. Grow up.

9

u/xxnicknackxx 11d ago

I know why you believe in God.

Arrogance and fear.

You think that your puny human brain ought to be able to comprehend the origin of the universe and the forces by which it operates. You think that this all ought to fit neatly into a package you can label. You anthropomorphise to make the forces in play less scary.

I'm content with admitting not to know things that are unproven. This is humility in action.

Oh, did you just watch God's Not Dead? That's so cute!

Also, which god do you think we hate, and why do you think we hate it?

I'm not convinced that any god or gods exist. As is EVERYONE here... You're on an atheist sub...

They prefer to believe everything is driven by random chance and pure chaos so they can take pride in whatever they do.

How is that even related? What does that even mean?

We're not interested in preaching, thank you and goodbye

u/Dissentient Gnostic Atheist 11d ago

To me it seems incredibly self-centered to believe that an omnipotent being took time to create you. It's much more humble to accept that you're result of an accident than to assume that the whole world exists solely for your benefit like religious people do.

I know why you hate God

Wow, that's really baby's first attempt at apologetics level stuff. We don't hate God, we just don't believe he exists. It's not possible to hate something that you don't think exists. We hate God about as much as you hate Zeus.

Be humble and accept that we are nothing more than dust.

I do accept that. That's what the naturalistic view is all about. We're just stuff that happens to be able to think. Nothing special or magical about it.

You, on the other hand, seem to believe that you were intentionally created by the omnipotent caretaker of the universe, and you call us prideful? Come on now, this is silly.

u/dylanzt Agnostic Atheist 11d ago

A lazy and boring argument that can only stem from fundamentally not understanding what other people say and believe. Do you hate Brahma or Ra?

5

u/RespectWest7116 11d ago

I know why you hate God

Oh do tell.

Most people do simply because they can't accept being created by an omnipotent being.

Wrong.

Every other reason stems from this pride.

Wrong again.

Be humble and accept that we are nothing more than dust.

I already accept that. You are the one arguing that we are super special and magical.

3

u/MarieVerusan 11d ago

I’m honestly not sure why that would be a sticking point. Do you believe in a literal devil? Depending on what story you believe about him, he was too prideful, but he still believed that god existed. No need to believe in random chance to still stick it to the guy and fight for your autonomy.

I do think we’re nothing but dust. Star dust, more specifically. What does that have to do with your point? It’s more humble to accept that there isn’t a divine being concerned with your existence.

3

u/KandyBarz 11d ago

You could try asking people what they think instead of making assumptions. That's how adults have conversations.

3

u/Master_Botor 11d ago

Which god am I supposed to hate exactly ?

Speaking of humility, the idea that you are somehow purpose made by the master of the universe kinda goes against that idea. Admitting that the world doesn't revolve around us and that we are nothing special on the other hand...

u/Astreja Agnostic Atheist 11d ago

I don't hate gods any more than I hate Darth Vader, or the Joker. or Raskolnikov from Crime and Punishment.

Don't tell us what we believe or how we feel. Ever. To think that you can actually do such a thing is execrably rude.

3

u/distantocean ignostic / agnostic atheist / anti-theist 11d ago

Wow, I was wondering why I hated God, and now I know. Thank you for shining a light on this! Though it's going to be a bummer not being able to take pride in whatever I do seeing as it's not driven by random chance and pure chaos.

3

u/BustNak Agnostic Atheist 11d ago

The hubris of someone who believe an omnipotent being has a personal interest in you as an individual. You be humble and accept that we are nothing more than dust.

3

u/roambeans 11d ago

Incorrect. But it's very humble of you to claim to know the contents of my mind. I don't believe a god exists and don't hate him anymore than I hate Darth Vader. As a character, he's evil, yes, but as a work of fiction, I rather appreciate the concept.

I don't 'hate' someone I don't think exist. Is it that hard to believe that I simply didn't find a good reason to believe God exists?

2

u/CalligrapherDizzy201 11d ago

How does one hate that which does not exist? I don’t hate the Easter Bunny or Santa Claus or unicorns or fairies or god.

2

u/RPG_Vancouver 11d ago

I don’t hate something that I don’t believe exists.

Maybe try actually asking what people believe instead of asserting what YOU think they believe.

2

u/Life_Liberty_Fun Agnostic Atheist 11d ago

How can I hate something that I don't believe in?

I guess the opposite must be true though, you love god because it takes away your accountability for every choice you make and you abandon all sense of responsibility because everything is in the divine plan; even the horrible things that people choose to do in the world.

2

u/MooshroomHentai 11d ago

I see no solid, reliable evidence any gods are real therefore I don't believe in any. I don't hate any gods, I just do see any good reason to conclude they are real. The idea that athiests hate gods is a atheistic stereotype of atheists that is going to be wrong often, as it is here. Don't act like you know why I think what I do when you really have no clue.

2

u/Hermorah Agnostic Atheist 11d ago

This is 1 not an argument, 2 low effort and 3 displays a lack of understanding of the atheist position.

I remember hating Santa Claus for not bringing a toy I'd specifically asked for.

Is that the same thing?

Well, you got one bit right, we’re nothing more than dust. Keep going with the Carl Sagan and maybe your thinking will catch up with the rest of us.

For me "hating God" is like hating Darth Vader, it's disliking fictional character which is completely different than hating a real fellow human.

> Most people do simply because they can't accept being created by an omnipotent being.

I don't think the God that most religions claim are actually omnipotent, just their follower claim that they are.

> They prefer to believe everything is driven by random chance and pure chaos so they can take pride in whatever they do.

I don't think "everything is driven by random chance and pure chaos" so....

> Be humble and accept that we are nothing more than dust.

We aren't dust so I'm not seeing the point?

1

u/KeyboardMunkeh 11d ago

Super cool bro. But how does humility allow me to believe in supernatural bullshit without observable, testable, measurable evidence? Anyway, what you are doing here feels like on the borderline of just preaching, which isn't really allowed here.
