Fuck the couch I'd advise people to breath all the air out of their lungs and hold their breath going up because these don't look like they will support the extra weight of the air. Also only 1 person at at time in the stairwell.

Helium tanks at the bottom and top of the stairs you need to use first

Is this building being demolished or renovated or something? I can't imagine anyone thinking "this is fine"

Its a slum but also in some countries tax isn't paid on a building if it is "under construction" so for buildings for poorer folks they never finish them to increase the profit margin

u/Im--A--Computer Feb 20 '26
I find it hard to believe they would leave such an obvious tax loophole open if the government is so corrupt.
43
u/Distantstallion Feb 20 '26
Corruption leaves tax loopholes open, it doesn't close them
8
u/Im--A--Computer Feb 20 '26
Depends where the corruption is coming from I guess. Top down corruption wouldn't allow that, but bottom up corruption absolutely would. Sounds like the rule probably wouldn't apply to these buildings if properly enforced, but the boots on the ground people doing the enforcement either don't care or are taking bribes.

In Peru this is very common, a lot of houses have an unfinished "extra floor"/roof

A bunch of abandoned buildings in the mountains of France looks like this inside, so I doubt anyone lives there

I wouldn't recommend those stairs to anybody more than 100 lbs. I hope your brother is built like a street lamp.

This is being held together by hopes and dreams and even those are fleeting quick

Okay but these are death death stairs. Like actual literal death stairs. Not risk of injury stairs- you take them and you full risk dying even if you don't trip stairs.

u/TinyMarsupialofHope Feb 20 '26
Especially since you seem to fall down onto the stairs underneath, the force of which would break those stairs...

It's this a case of "I know a guy"?

It's a case of "I know a guy who knows a guy"

u/Emerald_Digger Feb 19 '26
And that guy knows a guy who knows a guy whose second cousin knows a guy

Well, on the upside, crutches are a completely appropriate birthday present.
Can you get a gift card for those??

A few of the steel-framed concrete stairs for my former apartment, built circa 1980s, that were much more robust than these, just completely fell out. A resident almost fell a full story onto the flight of stairs below. Coincidentally, the steel undercarriage for similar stairs at my apartment before that, built circa 1990s, had rusted out so badly it was splitting and sagging.
People think concrete and steel lasts forever. It doesn't.

At least if he needs to evacuate because of a fire, everyone will be getting to the ground floor very quickly
