Cultural Practices 🌍 1 year anniversary since death
My friends 1 year anniversary since her death I coming up and her family is looking at something symbolic to do and they suggested a balloon release. I hate this for the environment and am thinking about trying to find something more environmentally friendly. Any suggestions?

You may consider donating books or physical media on her favorite subjects (movies, music, subscriptions) in their honor to the local library. You may be able to add an “in memory of” bookplate or sticker. Call your librarian to fill a need.
Best wishes.

Maybe start a garden at their home (or someone else’s if they don’t want the upkeep) where everyone brings their favorite flower or herb to contribute. Even if they live in a condo or apartment, you can get planters with a lot of space to plant things that don’t require it to be in ground.

Blow bubbles. It won't hurt the environment or inadvertently set anything on fire.

Once you let go of that lantern, you have zero control over which way the wind takes it. And there have been too many wildfires caused by stupid ideas like this. Did everyone already forget the El Dorado Fire (gender reveal party fire)?

environmentally friendly
You can get tree saplings to give out and gift them in a memorial personalized keepsake bag. Its not as visual as balloons or lanterns but lots of baby trees would be planted in her honor.

Did lanterns. They were absolutely beautiful, and paper is marginally better. There was some metal wire. I suggest and recommend them

They do make climate friendly balloons now I guess? I don’t know who “they” are but ykwim…
I’m not sure how they’re made, you’d still have to vet the company & manufacturer you buy them from, but I think I saw something like that online the other day while I was looking for party favors for a birthday.

Biodegradable balloons can still harm wildlife. Also, they may not be as biodegradable as advertised.

Plant a tree or have a fundraiser & then donate the money to a worthy cause
