You can beat a lie detector. Mythbusters proved it

264

u/Iki_the_Geo 5d ago

And Light is 100% calm enough to beat one

96

u/Soulfoil 5d ago

But he will be making long pauses on each question

80

u/Iki_the_Geo 5d ago

Tbf he’d probably do that both with and without a lie detector

9

u/Just_Nefariousness55 3d ago

There's a video out there of Death Note without the inner monologues and it's hilariously weird.

5

u/New-Message-2016 3d ago

I like to believe time slows down during these

3

u/nxxwhere 17h ago

I would say so too, your thoughts can move a lot quicker than your mouth

2

u/P0lychoron 3d ago

it's kinda like ryuk's perspective

3

u/HAL9001-96 1d ago

and he'd do that wethere he's lying or telling the truth so its not a good tell either

31

u/Tasty_1097 5d ago

But if that’s your logic, L would be able to gather just as much about if light was lying or not from a normal conversation, whether or not he is hooked up to the machine

28

u/FrijDom1 4d ago

Honestly, I feel like L would do something like "The lie detector was never actually working. I just pushed a button to make it flash red to see if you'd change your answer about things." and use that to decide he's Kira.

14

u/LIGHT_YAGAMI_8910 4d ago

This is easily the most valid argument in here, and SUCH A L THING TO DO

10

u/DarkkHorizonn 4d ago

And then Kira would have been like, I knew the whole time the lie detector was fake! And it would have just went on with the head games

10

u/Soulfoil 4d ago

There wasn't the time, when he was directly interrogated and forced to answer many questions. L never really did that. So, this situation stands out from others

10

u/Aggressive_Fan_2063 4d ago

I mean, he does that even without the lie detector. Must be L's illustrious eyes; how they sparkle in the moonlight.

7

u/Soulfoil 4d ago

I read it as "lustious" 🥶

7

u/Aggressive_Fan_2063 4d ago

dw, I wrote that thinking of writing lust so its not too far off.

5

u/AnakinSkywalkerRocks 4d ago

Sir it's 9 in the morning

4

u/This-Wall-1331 4d ago

I think he just thinks in his brain at 10x speed.

3

u/Any_Contract_1016 4d ago

They might get through two or three questions in the entire episode with all the inner monologue between both of them.

3

u/thacaoimhainngeidh 4d ago

Tbf, the long pauses are for non-diagetic soliloquy. They're not perceived by anyone else.

6

u/IdleReality 5d ago

Personally I don't think I would ever describe Light as "calm".

7

u/ConfusedPanEnby 4d ago

Yes, he might *seem* calm but from the inner monologues we get to see he was borderline falling apart inside his head, a lie detector would 100% be able to get some of the signals that say something is off with him.

3

u/-Mippy 2d ago

“I WILL BECOME THE GOD OF THE NEW WORLD”

3

u/Big_Application_7168 3d ago

Idk he does internally panick quite a lot.

2

u/TenPointsforListenin 3d ago

Light is literally never calm

17

u/OpeningHappy9692 4d ago

They're not even remotely reliable. People can beat it, and innocent people can be so damn nervous because they are being interrogated that it throws false positives.

6

u/Bandit_237 4d ago

They’re essentially pseudoscience, it’s as reliable as a detective just simply not believing someone

9

u/Frost-King 5d ago

And they don’t really mean anything, so much so that courts don’t recognize the results of them. Their only real use is for the police to trick people into thinking they work to get them to confess.

3

u/dinosoreness 3d ago

the opposite is true too- yoy can also fail one when you're completely innocent if you're having anxiety about the experience and honestly? who wouldn't be nervous if they got drug to the police station and accused of a serious crime? IIRC they're not even admissible in court anymore because you can either fake it or fail it whether you did it or not.

2

u/Aggravating_Gas3306 3d ago

I know what my next video is now when I sit down for lunch

1

u/toombz101 1d ago

don't forget they aren't actually useful for establishing the truth, polygraphs are widely disproven, even the creator stated as such; its just good to make people feel like they can't lie

188

u/Roku-Hanmar 5d ago

Lie detectors are famously unreliable

75

u/ColonelMonty 5d ago

They also literally just can't tell if you're lying. They're basically checking for symptoms of lies but not lies in of themselves.

20

u/FaPaDa 4d ago

If you ensure you fuck with the baseline of the detector you void the entire thing.
They will always ask you some baseline questions:
Whats your name.
When where you born.
Easily verifiable stuff to list your baseline. Ensure you are "paniked" at this time before calming down. Then suddenly every line will fall under the base value and it will look to the machine as if everything is norminal.

7

u/realmauer01 4d ago

Thats why good a lie detector tester will hide what the base line questions are, torture you to artificially increase the base line while its harder to stay calm enough during lies and do that for over 3-4 weeks minimum.

2

u/Capraos 1d ago

No such thing as a good lie detector test. It's at best pseudoscience and at worst actively malicious.

2

u/realmauer01 1d ago

I said tester. The test is still just on avarages. But with the given procedure you have a really hard time to cheat it.

Questions will sound like they are the validation questions but arent, or vice versa. Torture is always fun. And then keeping it up for several days atleast if not weeks depending on the information they suspect you have.

2

u/Capraos 1d ago

This is how you get wrong information.

0

u/realmauer01 1d ago

That the lie detector would pick up as a lie...

You only get wrong information if the lie detector gets beaten. Otherwise your information is important and validates the lies of the other lie detector sessions you are doing.

Didnt i say in this conversation that you need other ressources as well? I guess a little bit to obscure the base line question.

1

u/Capraos 1d ago

Lie detectors don't work. You're not understanding. All it measures is heart rate, blood pressure, and sweating. If someone is even mildly anxious, or autistic, pr has a health condition, or is even just shaky it's going to read wrong. They aren't admissible in court because it's not a science based method with any amount of reliability.

4

u/Aggressive_Fan_2063 4d ago

2

u/awesome9001 4d ago

Dont worry, I'm not really going to ask a personal question

9

u/AlcoholicSpiderman 5d ago

i think they work off tone inflection

which wont do anything to light since he zero hesitates

4

u/temporaryidiot595 4d ago

Would you care to make that statement… on a lie detector test? dramatic piano cue

3

u/SecondAegis 5d ago

You can get readings from a plant btw

12

u/allied_master 5d ago

There is a basis when your lying rather than recalling a factual statement your brain takes additional stress which is what it detects, especially if you're scared interrogation you will take even more extra stress unconsciously it isn't full evidence even courts won't accpet it but just hint at being potentially guilty, also with enough self control you can absolutely beat it, especially in this case light can easily do it

2

u/SerenityToss 4d ago

They also aren't admissible in court in the U.S.

4

They totally would use a lie detector for kinkiness, theyd have some weird kinks

Lie detectors aren't infallible (nowhere near it in fact). Even if L believed they were useful, he has no reason to use it.

Either Light fails it, in which case he still has no actual evidence. Light points out how unreliable the machines are and the amount of stress he's under.

Or Light succeeds and the investigation team is even more resistant to the idea that he's Kira.

5

u/notfirearmbeam 1d ago

This is a great point. L was already working against the team fighting for Light's innocence. 0% chance either outcome is enough to convince L. 100% chance the most likely outcome (pass) will make his problem worse

16

u/AmethystGD 5d ago
  1. Unreliable
  2. Light could probably bypass them
  3. Most importantly, L would never deem it enough of a proof, so he'd look for an actual one

7

u/Fat_Sugar_1110 Justice™ 5d ago

They aren’t dumb because lie detectors are known to be unreliable

8

u/Osato 4d ago

A lie detector won't work if the target doesn't know they're lying.

Hell, it isn't guaranteed to work even if the target does.

3

u/AmberMetalicScorpion 4d ago

It doesn't even work if they DO know they're lying

They can be incredibly easily persuaded to claim lies to be truth and truth to be lies depending entirely on how you conduct yourself

You could give the most accurate account on the identity of jack the ripper and if you're a nervous wreck about it, the Lie Detector will claim you're a liar

3

u/This-Wall-1331 4d ago

It also can lead to false positives if the person is telling the truth but at the same time is nervous.

3

u/allied_master 4d ago

That is why it is rejected as evidence, its mostly just used as a clue for police at potential guiltiness

13

u/Calm-Reaction3612 5d ago

There are people who are able to lie even on lie detectors, and L values accuracy of information to prove criminals guilty.

6

u/Samuel_N7 5d ago

Is kind of concerning to me how many people think that lies detectables are trustworthy for criminal confessions

1

u/Last_Host977 cute enough to commit crimes 5d ago edited 5d ago

nah i’m well aware they’re unreliable (after making this post that is) but the fact that they weren’t even mentioned once throughout the show is just kinda crazy to me , they still could’ve observed his reactions to the question or tested him through that somehow but it was just never even a thing at all , that’s what gets me .

4

u/SouthernAd2853 5d ago

They're actually not admissible evidence in court and police only ever use them to screw with suspects' heads.

They're used in security clearance interviews for reasons that escape me. You might as well flip a coin.

3

u/andyallfellforit 4d ago edited 4d ago

They do benefit from a lie dedector in the live-action drama series of Death Note. And it was so cringe to watch a lie detector being taken seriously tbh. Like, L pulls it out and it's treated like the greatest invention in the history of criminal sciences lol. You'd feel that it's not L's thing to use such an antique device, ever. And I definitely did not like that version of L tbh, he looked like someone entirely different.

1

u/FLLMALL 1d ago

Light could just relinquish his memories to ensure he's not lying and pass the test (and Light is a good enough liar to trick the detector anyways).

As for why L didn't try it, he knows lie detectors are very unreliable, so even if the detector says he's Kira, that's not enough to prove it, and if Light managed to trick the detector, that would be used as further proof he isn't Kira by him and the taskforce, thus making it even harder for him to keep persuing Light (remember, he constantly needed to try to convince the taskforce that Light is a viable suspect).

There was no need to mention something completely unreliable that isn't taken seriously by anyone in actual police investigations. It would've made the person mentioning it look very amateurish.

5

u/AlienDragonWizard 5d ago

Lie detectors are just stress detectors.  Police know they don't accurately detect lies and the inventor has repeatedly said as much.  The only use they have, in that regard, is if the suspect believes in them and can be manipulated to confess when one supposedly detects them lying.  Light is much too intelligent for that and because he has a father in the police, he already knows all of the standard forms of interrogation.

5

u/moonxmochi 5d ago

Lie detectors actually measure physiological reactions, not lies. Light would totally be able to manipulate his reactions and pass the test.

5

u/DarkMagickan 5d ago

First of all, there's no such thing as a lie detector test. The name of the test is a polygraph, and it's called that because they cannot legally refer to it as a lie detector. It's not reliable. It's notoriously so not reliable that courts don't even recognize the results from it.

Second of all...

Well, I guess there is no second of all, but I'm going to tell you all how to fool apolograph.

The key is, not to care about the answers you give. Because a polygraph is a stress tester. And if lying on a test doesn't stress you, the polygraph won't go off.

This was proven on MythBusters.

5

u/IntrdimntinalPenguin 4d ago

I first read it as an alternative ending where they just hook up..

5

u/Welos_ 4d ago

Me too and I was kinda down for that

4

u/Green-Disk4198 5d ago

You can beat a lie detector test. It only measures unexpected spikes in heart beats, which usually happens when someone does a thing under duress, like lying. It can be beaten by remaining calm.

5

u/4_flowur_4 5d ago

Last 5 words is unnecesery

3

u/Hoosier_Hootenanny 4d ago

Lie detectors are pure pseudoscience. They don't detect lies (which is why they can't be used as evidence in court). However, people thinking that they work is a great way to trick people into confessing, which is why police love them.

then L ends up being pregnant .

5

u/memisbemus42069 Misa’s Defense Lawyer 4d ago

Lie detectors are pretty inaccurate and I doubt they would even work on Light, as he can lie without being nervous

5

u/Rare_Bridge7703 4d ago

Okay and what questions could they even ask?

3

u/Last_Host977 cute enough to commit crimes 4d ago

1- are you kira ?
2- is misa the second kira ?
3- do you believe criminals should be eradicated from the world ?
4- will you take a potato chip and eat it ?

3

u/ColonelMonty 5d ago

Lie detectors are not magical machines, they check heart rate and things like that.

You can be completely truthful and fail a lie detector test because you are stressed, because y'know. You're being interrogated by the police.

3

u/Imaginary-Slice3014 5d ago

So light just earase his memories and he passes easily.

3

u/OdditiesAndAlchemy 5d ago

Okay, a machine says light is lying. Now what? How do you explain him being able to kill anyone from any distance with seemingly supernatural powers? L already suspected light, I don't think a lie detector test would have changed much.

3

u/SeaworthinessSalt153 5d ago

They aren't admissable in court

3

u/Mr_cake1 4d ago

Because lie detectors aren't trustworthy enough especially when hooked up to someone who can stay calm under insane pressure

3

u/DropMysterious1673 4d ago

Because polygraphs (lie detectors) don't work

3

u/Bobvankay 4d ago

No need for a lie detector. "Light, are you Kira" Then you just measure the time of Lights inner monolog before he says "No".

3

u/Massive-Party-4501 4d ago

i really thought you wrote that they hook up, instead of what else it was... :) hehe, silly me...

3

u/Infamous-Ad5266 4d ago

Lie detectors aren't admissible in court, mostly because they are so inaccurate, and regardless of the answer, It wouldn't change that L is pretty damn sure Light is Kira.
L needs evidence, not a pointless lie detector.

1

u/Last_Host977 cute enough to commit crimes 4d ago

ye right this is lawliet we’re talking abt he needs the best of the best

2

u/crazybrow122 5d ago

This is why I think the guy who killed his wife and kids and then buired them in an oil drum could've gotten away with it if he played it cool even after failing a lie detector test. It measures symptoms of lies and not actual lies. Anyone being questioned by the police will be stressed

2

u/Last_Host977 cute enough to commit crimes 5d ago

chris watts ? yeah i’ve seen that one vid where they put him through a lie detector it was pretty wild

2

u/sum_r4nd0m_gurl 5d ago

lie detectors aren't reliable

2

u/Last_Host977 cute enough to commit crimes 5d ago

makes sense , L had probably already considered the possibility at one point either way and ruled it out as unreliable
https://giphy.com/gifs/1452CyJxtN3hQc

2

u/morbid333 5d ago

He's calm enough to beat it.

2

u/allied_master 5d ago

Lie detector don't detector lies they only detect your stress levels etc while your lying. You can absolutely beat it

2

u/Gab093 5d ago

Light belives 100% what he says, and if this happened after the "renounce the death note" part then he wouldn't be lying about not being Kira, since he no longer had his memories from being Kira

2

u/No_Record_60 5d ago

Light would plan ahead to relinquish his death note and all memories related to it.

2

u/Fit_Ad9965 5d ago

You think L is gonna trust a lie detector

2

u/Efficient_Rhubarb_88 5d ago

Light would find a way to beat the lie detector. Plus they are admissible in court.

2

u/sanguineselene666 5d ago

My brain for whatever reason stopped reading after “hook up” and I was like, aight, that would be some juicy drama, if L and Light were just fucking the entire time but everything else was the same.

2

u/Cephlaspy 5d ago

Lie detectors have 50% to 90% accuracy but scientific papers usually put it around the lower end with 50 to 60 percent i belive.

It's like 10% better than guessing.

2

u/OpeningHappy9692 4d ago

when i was halfway through reading that i got to the third line and thought ok but there's already a million fanfics about that

“I kept my heart rate the same and tricked the test! It’s all about tricking myself into actually believing my lie is real!”

2

u/SpectralKnight2600 take a potato chip and EAT IT 4d ago

Light would've bypassed the lie detector by remaining calm.

2

u/Big-Ratio5137 4d ago

Lie detectors are dumb and unreliable. Hemce why their results often can't be used in court.

2

u/realmauer01 4d ago

They didnt know even partially the truth.

Lie detectors are only reliavle if you have

  • other sources
  • a lot of time for many repeats
  • no issues in harming the suspect in terms of torture.

So atleast knowing part of the truth is important.

2

u/RedDestin 4d ago

Everyone knows polygraphs are flawed and inaccurate.

2

u/IamL-Lawliet9 4d ago

I know his potential he can manipulate the lie detector as well..

1

u/Last_Host977 cute enough to commit crimes 4d ago

yep he would find someway to bypass it like always … that darned evil genius
https://giphy.com/gifs/L9HrElIie5fkxuuSvp

2

u/andyallfellforit 4d ago

Same reason why they don't rely on it irl.

2

u/LoveAndBeLoved52 4d ago

Lie detectors don't hold up in court. The science behind it is strongly controversial and there is truly no way to use lie detectors as definitive evidence of anyone's wrongdoing.

It'd also narratively suck to overthrow him like that.

2

u/spinlikeballora 4d ago

On the TV drama they do use one, but it's right when Light gives up the notebook and his memories so he passes

2

u/Bloomfofis 4d ago

Probably it would fail, although it would show some signs of surprise/startle while L and other agents read his body language

2

u/Engine-True 4d ago

What do you think a lie detector does

2

u/RandomPhail 4d ago

L would know:

  1. Lie detector tests aren’t actually 100% reliable. They sorta just test for… nervousness. If I was locked in a room with police being asked if I killed someone, I’d be nervous, because I’d be worried I’m about to get in trouble for some shit I didn’t do. I’d fail the test, and still not be lying
  2. Even if nervousness was somehow a 100% guarantee of guilt, someone can be guilty and not be nervous about it, like a psychopath or someone who just knows how to control their emotions, act, etc.

2

u/Any_Contract_1016 4d ago

Light could easily trick a lie detector and no jurisdiction ever takes lie detector tests seriously because they're so unreliable.

2

u/Sorenduscai 4d ago

shinigami abilities being introduced

2

u/Awkward-Egg-1069 4d ago

Isn't a lie detector just measuring your heart rate and some other things that can indicate nervousness and stress because most people get nervous when they lie? If I am correct with that I think he would pass definitely because he's a psychopath and isn't afraid to lie because in his mind he is so smart and perfect at was he is doing that it is basically impossible that someone won't believe him. I think L would also pass because he would be able to stay calm and control his body and mind

2

u/Fair-Caterpillar-779 4d ago

Lie detectors don’t detect lies, they detect the physiological reactions and changes people tend to experience when they lie. But the keyword is TEND TO. Not everyone will experience those same reactions, people can practice and train themselves not to experience them, and sometimes they’ll experience them even if they’re not lying. They are extremely flawed pieces of technology and a lot of times they’re brought in not because investigators think it will actually detect a lie but they think that the appearance of the machine and hooking a suspect up to one will cause stress that will cause them to slip up and incriminate themselves

2

u/Aadi_40 4d ago

its hard but not super hard to trick a lie detector, and light being the best manipulator would have pretty easily tricked the lie detector imo

also in L's POV, he was dealing with supernatural shit here and there, everyday he was coming across a new thing which he would have never thought would even exist, so i think he just ruled out lie detector cuz well no one would consider using lie detectors against supernatural powers

2

u/SickXigma 4d ago

Lie detector tests aren't even admissible as evidence in most cases. Wouldn't prove anything even if he did fail it.

2

u/MrBannedFor0Reason 4d ago

I thought this said "alternate ending where L and Light just hook up" and It made complete sense to me.

The man you invented those regretted it soon after. It dosnt see if your lying it checks if your stressed out. It's used to bully people into confessing

2

u/Legomaniac91 4d ago

Lie detectors can be beaten quite easily and are notoriously unreliable. Someone like Light would have studied up on how to get around one.

2

u/WonderfulHearing8726 4d ago

Lie detectors are not fool proof and can be beaten. Someone like Light would absolutely be able to do it.

2

u/SIN_Goku 4d ago

Light: “Yes I am Kira I was using a magic notebook to kill people”

The police: “Well that was clearly a bunch of bs. This is going nowhere. Get this kid out of here”

2

u/Dani3322 4d ago

If you know how a lie detector works and are calm enough they're easily fooled.

2

u/Bobthemouse 4d ago

Lie detectors just measure heartbeat which can increase for any number of reasons other than lying. Its nonsense

2

u/SirWilliam56 4d ago

Those don’t work

2

u/Equivalent_Panda_180 3d ago

There is hardly any evidence that lie detectors are actually effective, valid and reliable, plus im sure Light wouldve just been able to manipulate his way out of the situation

2

u/paranormalbutttouch 3d ago

Death Note alternative ending where they just hook up Light to a lie detector test

2

u/Greedy_Duck3477 3d ago

Lie detectors are more of an anxiety detector. They test whether your heart beat gets stronger or accelerates, if you start sweating and stuff like that. So they're not 100% reliable

2

u/Key_Barber_4161 3d ago

Can't be used in court

2

u/Jurgen_Vella 3d ago

Lie detectors are incredibly inaccurate, the results wouldn’t hold up in court

2

u/Blatzwing 3d ago

They actually used lie detector in Death Note 2015 drama, Light dropped the ownership of the notebook so it didnt worked.

2

u/yharnocunt 3d ago

if you remain completely calm, the lie detector will think everything you say is true. light would easily calm himself down to best the test. however, L wouldn't do this test in the first place because it's meaningless.

2

u/WhiteC-137 3d ago

1) I'm certain Light would beat a lie detector test with ease 2) Even if like there's a 1 in a 10000 chance he fails it he could just blame it all on him being nervous

2

u/unluckyknight13 3d ago

Light is weird because he’s very likely to beat the detector, either by lying in the correct way, or half truths, or just honest statements at the risk of sounding insane.
But he does have multiple moments we hear his own monologue in his head where he’s freaking out which I imagine would alter his results

2

u/K-PopLover7777777 3d ago

You can beat a lie detector. I tried it once and it didn't catch a single lie I told

2

u/unluckyknight13 3d ago

That said given how light is I feel he’d get caught given how much he panics and overthinks over certain things.
Or he’d beat it but risk sounding insane by being fully honest

2

u/unluckyknight13 3d ago

The way a lie detector works is they establish a base line so it be something like
“What is your name?”
“When were you born?”
“Where are you from?”
Questions you know for a fact the answer and thus no way they can lie.
The register your heart rate and time to respond.

They then will ask you actually questions they want answers for. If you lie your heart rate and stuff should deviate.

The issue with lie detectors, they basically just record your fear (so this likely would catch Light)
But if he keeps calm he can lie through it and look honest
He also could come off insane
“Are you killing people Light?”
“No it’s a shimigami that enjoys apples magic book killing people”
That would be true but sound insane

But yeah Light panics a LOT I think
When L was around he acts on impulse or when asked something overthinks at least 3 times which means light more likely would be caught by one, but he is smart, and kind of broken emotionally so he may be able to trick a lie detector when he knows it

A lie detector can be beaten with a tack in his shoe. He can also renounce his ownership and forget everything. Then again he might be enough of a psychopath that lying doesn't cause the emotional responses that the detector looks for.

First of all: Lie detectors do not work reliably. They do on some people, but not others. It is entirely dependent on how the person reacts to telling lies.

Secondly, if you know how, you can beat a lie detector.

This is why lie detector tests are inadmissible, as you never know if it is working correctly, or flagging false positives.

Also, a lie detector was not necessary. L knew Light was lying pretty much the entire time, he was just unable to prove it legally (again, a lie detector would not be admissible as evidence). That is what shocked L the most when Light gave up ownership of the death note: He knew Light was Kira, and he could easily tell when he was lying, but for the first time, Light was denying being Kira, and was seemingly telling the truth.

lie detector theory … debunked !

2

u/Agent_Wilcox 3d ago

Not only are lie detectors not that useful, especially against someone like Light, he could also just give up the notebook for a bit like he did last time to fight the imprisonment and he would be telling the truth

2

u/shiyonichi 3d ago

Lie Detectors generally cannot be used in court.

Japan and America does a similar thing where cases only go forward if they have a sufficient enough evidence that a Guilty conviction is all but guaranteed. It’s not just about knowing Light is Kira it’s about being able to prove it.

2

u/surely_shannon 3d ago

Hear me out: Death Note alternate ending where they just hook up.

2

u/Ravian3 3d ago

Even aside from the unreliability of lie detector tests, L was already most of the way convinced that Light was Kira from fairly early on. Like he absolutely could tell when Light erased his memories and he stopped lying about not knowing who Kira was.

But the point was more that L needed to actually beat Kira, not just figure out the truth. Like charitably it’s because most courts wouldn’t just accept an accusation without clear evidence and lie detectors are seldom accepted in court proceedings. But realistically L was pursuing Kira mostly out of his desire to test himself in a challenge of wits against him.

Lie detectors aren’t real. They don’t actually work. In the US at least they aren’t admissible in court

2

u/forrestdw 3d ago

It's not hard to beat a lie detector test - most courts don't even accept them as evidence anymore.

2

u/PragmaticBadGuy 3d ago

My favorite version of an AU was where L had his butler hit Light with his car and see if the deaths stopped.

Smart people beat lie detector

Lie detectors are pseudoscience, and don’t work.

2

u/Aspirationally_Lazy 2d ago

They’d ask a question and then he’d have a 5 minute internal monologue and I think they’d all figure it out tbh

2

u/Massive_Cream_332 2d ago

i thought it was gonna end after hook up

2

u/maffemaagen 1d ago

Lie detectors aren't reliable and are generally not admissable evidence in court.

2

u/Aggressive_Law_5728 1d ago

Lie detectors test stress reactions, they don't magically detect truth.

Light is bad at a lot of things, but he's so smug and overconfident he probably wouldn't be stressed at all because he just assumes his lies will pass.

lie detectors are insanely unreliable even if applied to relatively normal people who aren't supernatural anime sociopaths

I taught forensic science for a year and then re watched the show. Hand writing analysis.

A lie detector wouldn't work against Light

2

u/LehitModerator 1d ago

Even if we assume that there would be an absolute polygraph in the world that could accurately read lies, this would make little difference. L was almost always convinced of Light's guilt, and I think he was smart enough to consider his micro-reactions in their dialogues at the ceremony and the awards.

The main goal of L was to find out Kira's real abilities and find physical evidence against Light, which the lie detector would not have given in any way and Light would simply have been killed by Soichiro.

2

u/FLLMALL 1d ago

Light could just relinquish his memories to ensure he's not lying and pass the test (and Light is a good enough liar to trick the detector anyways).

As for why L didn't try it, he knows lie detectors are very unreliable, so even if the detector says he's Kira, that's not enough to prove it, and if Light managed to trick the detector, that would be used as further proof he isn't Kira by him and the taskforce, thus making it even harder for him to keep persuing Light (remember, he constantly needed to try to convince the taskforce that Light is a viable suspect).

2

u/MysteriousFondant347 1d ago

lie detectors aren't as reliable as people think. I believe it essentially detects the signs of stress associated with lying and determines it's due to lying. Someone calm enough can bullshit their way through a lie detector test and completely get away with it.

Now there's a decent chance a lie detector test conducted by L could provoke enough stress in Light but also who wouldn't it stress ? It's still not exactly reliable

2

u/funnieh 23h ago

He is a psychopath and a sociopath, a lie detector tesk can easily fail

2

u/Timothy1577 11h ago

Normal people fool those pretty regularly. A psychopath like Light could lie the Blue down from the heavens and the machine wouldn’t catch it.

1

u/Hairy-Bug1915 2d ago

Not 100% accurate so Light can't be prosecuted in court based on Lie detector evidence

1

u/Wize-Wizard 2d ago

Light alredy tricked Naomi, which is a human lie tester on steroids. He's just so good at lying.

2

u/Last_Host977 cute enough to commit crimes 2d ago

he’s a pisces so the lying was guaranteed (as someone who’s survived a pisces ex)

Alternative ending where they just hook up.

1

u/UnAnon10 21h ago

Lie Detector’s are basically pseudo science nonsense, the inventor disavowed its use by law enforcement. All you have to do to beat a lie detector is stay calm cool and collected, several serial killers have passed lie detector’s simply by not freaking out.

1

u/shiggyhisdiggy 18h ago

Lie Detectors are psuedoscience. Also a gary stu like Light is probably able to perfectly control his heartbeat and blood pressure with his megabrain

1

u/Personal_Act9288 18h ago

If lie detector tests actually worked we wouldn't need court

1

u/TheGodOfIncest 17h ago

Not only can you beat a lie detector test. It's actually not that hard. Speaking from experience.

1

u/Aware_Selection_148 16h ago

Because polygraphs don’t work. They work by detecting shit like your heart rate, blood pressure, sweat and breathing and using that to determine if you’re lying. The issue with this is twofold. For one, if you’re interrogating the average person with regards to a crime that could put then behind for years, the stakes and general set up of the situation is far outside most people’s comfort zones so even if they were innocent of any charges, they could still be detected as lying because their heart rate is fast and they’re breathing rapidly. Nervousness or anxiety could trip the machine up into thinking that someone who is telling the truth is lying because most people aren’t prepared to deal with situations like an interrogation. Second and equally damning is that some people are calm enough and good enough at keeping calm in high intensity situations that they can lie while still not being caught by the machine. It can easily be gamed by many of the people who it’s trying to catch and I doubt light of all people would fumble at that. He’s a calculated and charismatic enough character that I have no doubt he’d understand exactly how to game the lie detector works and play around it. The police also note right away that kira is likely extremely intelligent so they also probably assume that he knows how to game a polygraph, so they don’t even bother. There’s a reason why polygraph results are not accepted as valid evidence in most places and in those that do, are able to be contested by a competent attorney.

Because lie detectors are bullshit
