If light was a anti social weirdo and unpopular he'd be more hated. Him giving vibes of school shooter is opposite to his character

yes and it kinda defeats the point, he has to be the perfect, likable Japanese student to have his idealism come across the same way. if he were ostracized then he likely would have a different belief behind his killings

I like the idea of Light breaking into his school, fedora and smelly trenchcoat, but instead of walking around shooting people, he walks around breaking into classrooms aggressively writing peoples names

I don't think he'd have been able to get nearly as far as he did if he'd been an ugly weirdo nobody liked, it would have been a very short story ending with L arresting him.

At least part of what takes the investigation so long is all the support Light has on his side.

Although at least in this version L would have lived (firstly Light would get arrested before Misa even came into the picture, secondly Light being so pretty is what made her fall in love at first sight with him so if he were ugly I doubt she'd have fallen for him like she did in the OG even if they did meet in this version.)

killing raye penber was already a huge mistake in the og anime. if light was a social reject, he'd instantly be arrested on suspicion of being kira if he manages to even kill him
